Man, I think you got it ... this is excellent work ... you have obviously done your homework and have come up with an innovative solution to the problem ...
Your problem with heat was over voltage. This new build should get your volts well under control. You should be able to give this one as many amps as your can handle without too much heat buildup ...
nice job isolating the cells ... never seen it done in such a samll package before ...
you might get more out of it if you use potassium hydroxide not baking soda.
