hey mr strad 3411 why dont you go on the x factor panel with simon and those other morons you are really cut out for it.musicians who have done as many great things as mr ricci has are beyond criticism so F U.
Probably the finest PERFORMANCE I've ever heard of this piece - and probably the finest I'll ever hear. This must be about the most difficult piece in the whole violin repertoire.
Do you know how difficult is this piece? Do you know how old is he in this video? Do you play better than him? It is a giant of violin and he plays this piece marvelous. :)
@violinoamore I hope you can post some of your "in tune" recordings so we may hear! He is nearly 70 years old here. I have not heard many violinists at that age play a piece of this difficulty. If you want to hear Ricci at his prime, I recommend you get "live" recordings from his Carnegie Hall & Town Hall recordings from the 40's...virtuouso playing that has no rivals. Anyhow...I think the key to Paganini is to have a kamikaze approach to the music...it has to be at the edge. My opinion!
@violinoamore not so much that it's out of tune, it's that he's not even trying to get all the notes; he's just going for "effect". i enjoy playing "on the edge", but it's just mush if you're not getting at least most of the notes. yes, his early recordings are untouchable, though. the "A Paganini Recital" album with Louis Persinger just makes your jaw drop, including Nel Cor Piu.
@cornel999 This is a live performance (in contrast to many of the early recordings) and is certainly not mush. Ricci was a renowned master of this repertoire when very few other violinists could touch it.

Mr.Ricci with his Italian origin understood perfectly what Ole Bull said once about
Paganini.

What if we compare this with let's say, Hillary Hahn?

very personal and unorthodox way of playing the violin...I like it...

Very fast ... but unfortunately also quite out of tune at many places ...

@violinoamore if your playing has a lot of virtuosity, does it even matter if you're a bit out of tune? im not sure.
carloslaran 1 year ago
@carloslaran I think the very first step in "virtuosity" is to play the right notes in tune ...

@violinoamore When playing this virtuoso music it is rare to be entirely note perfect.
Your critcisms are entirely unwarranted!
