  • Dear Prince, if you think singing the lyrics as they were written is less important than letting us know that you're no longer frightened by the devil, please stick to your own songs.

  • Lovely homage to a wonderful song/singer. One more testimony to the way everyone has felt about someone in his/her life. Thanks, Prince, for rendering Joni and Yourself in a fine light. I especially love how he he sings "drawn to those who ain't afraid." Thank you, ebonynichole, for the upload, for you have helped send some beauty out into the world that so needs it now.

  • it doesn't really mater who has the best version of this track but I'm sure we can all agree it is a great song and I'm enjoying all the different versions

  • @bowdaippon and I've listened to people who only play in their apartment, and still loved every second of it. I really don't understand people who act like music is some kind of competition. It's about expression.

  • Close third. James Blake beats out Joni and Prince.

  • As tempting as it is to compare with the original, nobody is going to get the perfect combination of beautiful technique and relxed intimacy of Joni's delivery. What Prince does is make a soul song out of it. It works and stands on its own merits. There are many situations where this treatment would work better than the original's. Prince certainly carries this version off with consumate skill. A very enjoyable cover!

  • This will always be second to Joni, but it's a close second.

  • Stunning !

  • I CANT TYPE

  • POSSIBLY THE BADEST BEST COVER NAD PRINCE SONF EVER BY FAR BY FAR BLAIRKARSCH COM

  • just incredible

  • best cover although nothing beats the original this surely comes the closest. Prince!!!!

  • This is great. Listen to Joe Miller's version also.

  • Listen to Joe Miller's version also.

  • Oh come on. This is awful. Aimless and pretentious crap.

  • @notvalidcharacters I love Prince, but I agree. To be more precise I love Prince and the Revolution.

  • @notvalidcharacters Pretentious? Um, yeah right! I discovered Joni thanks to Prince! He's been covering Joni tracks live in concert since 1983 or so...Pretentious is today's music scene with all the fake shit like American Idol and all those fools whom can't write nor play an instrument to save their own life!

  • Prince is truly amazing ....

  • This is a beautiful song.

  • Not a big Prince fan. Do respect his talent though. BUT...I am applauding this effort for sure. Excellent. A remarkable cover of Joni Mitchell's song. Probably one of the best. When an artist makes a complete 360 degree turn like this, still maintaining their own style and respectfully applying it to another source -- this is greatness. No Joni Mitchell fan should be angry by this version. It is a beautiful expression.

  • I don't think Prince would do a cover if he didn't think it was better than the original. And why would anyone? Lack of tallent abd the lure of money.

Todays radio is full of poor covers of classic tracks.

    This is beautiful, art, expression.

  • chills...

  • Like Joni his voice range is perfect for this song. The original being sung in Joni's inimitable style but this has to be a close second. Its makes me close to tears every time I listen to it, even more so than Joni strangely enough.

  • The slap bass ruins it, otherwise very soulful.

  • wunderful, wunderful, wunderful: Tanks to you and big thanks to Prince. For sure one of those ten most genious musicians we have on the planet..

  • i was going to say James Blake's was best, but this is so soulful, im not going to bother...

  • Does the song really end like that or was this faded out for the video?

  • @rosemarywatson it really ends like that.

  • Prince always does a better cover .

  • i absolutely love what prince does with this song. stunning. but does anyone have any insight as to why he only sings the one verse??? its so frustrating and puzzling. why would someone participate in a "tribute" album and the selection he offers has had 2 of 3 verses cut! makes no sense. but what he does provide is transcendently beautiful and so heartfelt. one would think he would have wanted to do the whole song!

  • what a beautiful artist.he makes me feel like he's singing to me..

  • Just listened to James Blake version, not even close to being better than Prince take....

  • Sorry guys, but I think this is horrible.

  • One genius covering another..priceless. thank you Prince.

  • I think James Blake's got the best version of the song. :)

  • @jhayehidio Disagree...Joni, then Prince, then James Blake

  • i love this song

  • I have to say that I am a huge prince fan, I've love him for 15 years now, and I've love join since I was a child as well, and I'm not a huge fan of this cover, I like the stuff we did with wendy and lisa

  • check james blakes version for fresh new talent with heart!!

  • i respect this musician...he did alright here...joni would appreciate the gospel/jazz/r & b flavors

  • unbearable. especially the piano. I hate when people ruin a great song.

  • @csnowutube ACTUALLY, I DISAGREE WITH YOU!!!! THIS GUY LOVES JONI MORE THAN YOU....THATS WHY HE WROTE ENDLESS LETTERS TO HER BEFORE HIS CAREER BEGAN...A FACT USE IT AS YOU WISH

  • @sheilaboy44 No need to shout. Just giving my opinion. we all get one. peace.

  • This is the last person I would ever expect to cover Joni. But he makes it happen. I just wish I could hear the lyrics. She was a great lyricist.

    iwritehorror.blogspot.com

  • sublime

  • Prince does so many things so well. I like his old stuff so much.

  • beautiful cover...

  • Prince and Diana Krall could do with having a voice swap...

  • great cover except it raped the lyrics. missing the first few verses hides the secret love in the song

  • thank you :)

  • @miabelara I agree this is a GREAT cover... but do you really have any idea of how 'covered' Joni's WORK is? A friend who is archiving them has already produced around THIRTY cds with over twenty tracks each and he's still at it! This may well be the very best cover of this song anywhere but to say the best of her WORK is biting off a mighty big chunk. ...just sayin'

  • smooth pop version of the gritty, authentic, folk classic...too easy-listening for my tastes.

  • smooth pop version of the gritty folk classic...

  • I've heard the he is a joni fan . he did a Hendrix cover as well and it wasn't anywhere near as good as this.

  • Great Prince

  • listen to james blake's version too

  • So beautiful, God has blessed prince

  • Absolute talent! no matter if its a cover or an original..makes no never mind! Prince has got it! legend amongst us!

  • oh my word!!!!! Prince, now I love you even more. Incredible version ever! much respect to you sir.

  • Prince's One Nite Alone album is by far one of his best pieces of work.. Some beautiful songs on there. The title track, have a heart, here on earth etc should all b uploaded on Youtube if they're not yet!!!....

  • This is really a bold rendition of this classic song. Love him or hate Prince has always been willing to take artistic risks on vinyl. . . . This works for me totally, even losing the verses. . . .Makes the song less personal, more of a hymn. , wonderful gospel touch and the falsetto totally works,

  • From Joni to Prince , from P 2 me , 2 every sons mother , 2 every girl that's made my heart go bump, bump ,bump , I'd look you in the eyes and wish I could sing like this . P nails it . Now take back my goosebumps , Peace

  • I like it when he plays basketball with Eddie Murphy's brother.

  • P has referenced Joni often, most notably in The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker, but for all his musings, this really proves his affection for her

  • I have so much respect for Prince, I love so much of what he does, but as far as this goes its a bit fo a cop out! He leaves out two verses, the song becomes a chrous with a piano instrumental...??? It doesn't do the original justice at all. There are far better covers of this song out there.

  • The piano at the beginning gives me the best shivers ever!

  • Anything Prince does is tops. I love a wide range of music, from classical to rock, but Prince is high up on the list of favourites.

  • Prince: what a performer! And who writes better lyrics than Joni?

  • A Revelation.

  • OHH..CÁNADA OHH CÁNADA

  • gooseboms

  • very moving

  • Prince... no disliked... showing how briliant it is.

  • There is an Indie artist named Michael Holland, who does the best cover of this that I ever heard. It is incredibly emotive. This is an excellent version though.

  • During sound check @ the Empire Ballroom, Prince asked folks what they wanted to hear. This was my request. Prince sang it and brought the ROOM to tears. Simply Amazing.... I can never thank him enough.

  • Prince brings him self into this song completely

  • Cant think of another artist who could so gracefully cover such a classic song as this. The range in Princes voice is so mesmerising and provokes the same emotion as Joni does

  • I love Price and Joni! What a beautiful blending of talents.

  • christ that was brilliant. snuck up on me...

  • Best cover Ive ever heard.

  • I'd have a lot more respect for this if he hadn't cut half the lyrics... Prince, if you're going to do it, do it right. Do it all. The song begins as follows. .......................... Just before our love got lost you said I am as constant as a northern star And I said, constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar On the back of a carton coaster In the blue TV screen light I drew a map of Canada Oh Canada With your face sketched on it twice

  • Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid I remember that time you told me you said "Love is touching souls" Surely you touched mine 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you darling And I would still be on my feet I would still be on my feet I
  • Im so impressed by Princes treatment of this Joni Mitchell tune, such a compliment.

I'll have to hear the original....I'm so moved!

  • This is one of the best cover songs I've ever heard in my life....Prince made me love this song, his voice is superb. That man is simply amazing, I could drink a case of him!! I can't keep a dry eye whenever I hear this beautiful song by Prince!!

  • I could drink a case of Prince!! luvhim!!

  • Wow Prince is amazing I love this song and had never heard this cover before

  • GOD, I love this song, it's soooo beautiful and makes cry every time. Prince has amazing vocals and no one could do this song any better. He really is one amazing man, I absolutely love this song and all of his! I could see dancing with him off of this song, it's that beautiful. Love Prince forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We will use this song to present a video at our wedding, just love this song, could listen again and again

  • We will use this song to present a video at our wedding, just love this song, could listen again and again

  • Thankyou for posting this as i agree with the many on here that this is a great cover version which kind of adds something special to the original .....Great piece of work ;O)

  • This is without doubt the most moving version of Joni's beautiful love song I have ever heard.

No other artist I have heard has put so much thought and emotion into it.

  • @tommypaton I agree...I've heard this covered by so many, but Prince really turned it inside out! It wrenches my heart everytime I hear it...and I listen to it every day!

  • @ebonynichole I'm the same. I could shed tears every time I hear the opening lines. It just oozes emotion.

  • @ebonynichole

The cristina branco version is even more moving than this one!

  • @Epsie02 personally i dont think so!

  • @Epsie02

     Personally I don't thnk so!

  • @Epsie02 no it's not. stop hating on prince.

  • @tommypaton I agree. I think hw does it better than Joni.

  • @tommypaton

james blake did really amazing cover.it´s really worth to listen.it´s little bit less sentimental than this version although this is also realy beautiful.

  • @tommypaton James Blake has recently done a new version, its live on an UK radio station, its pretty amazing, you should check it out!

  • @tommypaton I really do agree with you. This version is quite moving. But if you are interested check out the james blake version. a new artist yes. But he definently did a different take that you might appreciate

  • @tommypaton i have to say that james blake's version really does it for me - the unclear phrases and almost breaking voice make it hurt in a way that i find tallies with the original.

  • @tommypaton This is one of my favorite songs. Prince did a beautiful cover but he's still not Joni Mitchell. I do like the piano in this cover though. :)

  • talented man i have the utmost respect for him

  • Thanks

  • Of the 25+ covers of this musical work of art, Prince's is by far the best. It leaves all of them --including Diana Krall's and K.D. Lang's-- in the dust.

  • wow, thats special, i grew up listening to lots of Joni, and have grown to be a huge fan of prince, and i dont think there's anyone elsa in the world can cover such a great folk song and make it there own so well.... <3 Prince!!!!!

  • Nice point Mgoos, no doubt Prince is an unusually gifted individual, but he also has an incredible work ethic and has worked his ass off on his gift, and that's what makes the difference between being really good and GREAT.

  • The idea of Prince as Genius is fine, but, in fact, Prince learns great things by working very hard. Prince is genius enough to know that great things come from working hard.

  • prince is a genius...what else can one say? i'm convinced that there's nothing musically that he can't do! he pays homage to mitchell, and then tastefully (and with great love and respect [i'm assuming]) gives us "his" oh-so-soulful and heartfelt version of the song...thanks for posting...i'm off to purchase that "tribute album" now!

  • my favorite version thank you nichole for posting
