The fact that you there in Washington nobody knows about the Spanish-Catalan conflict is a proof of how the "Spanish democracy" hides its reality to abroad. There's an interesting fast-easy-to-read book written by an English writer (Matthew Tree) titled "Barcelona, Catalonia: A View from the Inside". Tree states that "Catalonia will only be fully understood abroad if it becomes independent from Spain".

So, students who have doctorated in Catalunya can work pretty much anywhere. It's the other way round: monolingual spanish have a very hard time learning other languages, not us.
We are multilingual, we all speak catalan plus a much better spanish than most spanish monolinguals do, and besides we mostly speak pretty well other languages such as English (as you can see here) that we can learn more easily given our broader phonetic system and the fact that we are educated in 2 languages from the start.

I would take this documentary more seriously if it had been more better researched / more objective. Angry soundbytes from a few fascists and PP party members does not reflect majority sentiment towards Cataluyna. And the little village of Arenys hardly reflects the nuances of Catalans' feelings towards Spain. Pienso que el problema de España reside en que desde su origen ha sido imposible establecer un patrón común con el que se puedan identificar todos los españoles, lo que es lógico pues desde su origen es un conglomerado de culturas y etnias( musulmán, judia, romano-visigoda) La incapcidad de encontrar un patrón que englobe dicha diversidad ha dado lugar a una frustación identitaria que ha desarrollado en sendas guerras civiles, el mayor ejemplo de esta frustración son los movimientos carlistas

It was about time such a big conflict was told from an outsider point of view. Thanks for the good work and for sharing this battle. Not very secret, really... Everybody knows a lot of catalans wish their community to be an independent state. The problem, from my point of view, comes first when you consider all non-catalan born people living there and all catalan-born sons of immigrants (from other parts of the country). Also when you consider the fact that to ask for an independent state when you're benefiting from belonging to a country in loads of ways (financing, roads, universities, etc.) looks kind of arrogant.

La lenguas originarias de Escocia son el gaélico y el escocés, pero apenas las hablan. Hablan el inglés que los del sur les impusieron, igual que en Gales e Irlanda. Las medidas en defensa de lenguas minoritarias palidecen en comparación con las de España.

Felipe V no prohibió el catalán, lo sabéis de sobra. Exigió que el castellano fuese la lengua de la Administración. Y eliminó instuticiones propias catalanas porque os rebelásteis contra él. Los vascos conservaron las suyas intactas.

A un inglés le podrá gustar más o menos una eventual secesión escocesa, pero ellos no tienen de qué preocuparse, porque la que es su verdadera patria, Inglaterra, está a salvo territorialmente, y los escoceses hablan inglés (sólo en España las lenguas regionales han sobrevivido, debe de ser que Madrit no es tan opresor como lo pintan). When Spanish state robs to Catalans from year after year 22 bilion euros, 12000 euros per family, 10% of our GPD, when one’s schools and hospitals are not enough altough one pay enough, work enough, produce enough; when your trains and infrastuctures for your people or goods are not improved, when money is not invested in, but you, as a society produce enough, work enough, even more than enough to pay for it, then, the problem is shared by all.

The documentary does not reflect at all the truth of the situation. The historical description has omitted many aspects of the relationship between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, including the true nature of the war of succession (which was really a war between the old feudal regime and the, at the time, modern and centralised french-like state). Not to mention that in the video only the most radical and right wing right wing people are interviewed, an obvious bias towards one side.

The fact that you there in Washington nobody knows about the Spanish-Catalan conflict is a proof of how the "Spanish democracy" hides its reality to abroad. There's an interesting fast-easy-to-read book written by an English writer (Matthew Tree) titled "Barcelona, Catalonia: A View from the Inside". Tree states that "Catalonia will only be fully understood abroad if it becomes independent from Spain".

We are multilingual, we all speak catalan plus a much better spanish than most spanish monolinguals do, and besides we mostly speak pretty well other languages such as English (as you can see here) that we can learn more easily given our broader phonetic system and the fact that we are educated in 2 languages from the start.

Es decir, que a parte de ser el grupo del "SI" el mayoritario, observamos que en el hipotetico referendum, dejando a parte la abstencion (ya que no votan), el "SI" ganaria por un 62%

Spain is trying to silence it so no one knows in the European union, but now it is to big to ignore it. Yesterday spain biggest parties said NO to include catalana as an official language in the UE parliament.

Not very secret, really... Everybody knows a lot of catalans wish their community to be an independent state. The problem, from my point of view, comes first when you consider all non-catalan born people living there and all catalan-born sons of immigrants (from other parts of the country). Also when you consider the fact that to ask for an independent state when you're benefiting from belonging to a country in loads of ways (financing, roads, universities, etc.) looks kind of arrogant.

No me parece nada objetivo.... Viene a Madrid a pregutar y se va a un mitin del PP y al Santiago Bernabeu... Hay mucha gente en Madrid que amamos a Catalonia, que tenemos amigos catalanes y que respetariamos la decision de independencia aunque nos entristeceria, por que España no es Madrid, España es la suma todos... y algun dia habra que reinventar España incluyendo a los portugueses que tambien son Ibericos. Somos mejores. Escocia sólo tiene Parlamento propio desde 1999. Alex Salmond lleva años clamando que quiere para Escocia lo que Cataluña y País Vasco disfrutan.
La lenguas originarias de Escocia son el gaélico y el escocés, pero apenas las hablan. Hablan el inglés que los del sur les impusieron, igual que en Gales e Irlanda. Las medidas en defensa de lenguas minoritarias palidecen en comparación con las de España.

@HerrOttoKranz El inglés no se impuso en escocia, el inglés se habla desde hace siglos en escocia ( y quando digo siglos digo desde que escocia era un reino independiente, no se si sabes que escocia fue el primer país en declarar el inglés idioma oficial.

@breizhcatalonia1993 Y el castellano se habla también desde hace siglos en Cataluña, Vascongadas y Galicia. También en Asturias, mi comunidad: nosotros si fuimos independientes, un reino que llegaba hasta el Duero cuando vosotros no pasábais de marca carolingia.
Felipe V no prohibió el catalán, lo sabéis de sobra. Exigió que el castellano fuese la lengua de la Administración. Y eliminó instuticiones propias catalanas porque os rebelásteis contra él. Los vascos conservaron las suyas intactas.

@HerrOttoKranz en los años 20-30 (del 1900) el castellano no lo hablaba ni dios en catalunya, no fue hasta despues de las primeras inmigraciones masivas que empezo a tener presencia, aver si nos enteramos de las cosas antes de decir tonterias...

@SkullEvE El castellano fue la lengua natural de la burguesía catalana hasta que decidieron apostar por el regionalismo primero y el soberanismo/independentismo después.
Burguesía, por cierto, no europea y dinámica como se ha dicho, sino proteccionista y pesebrera. En perfecto castellano solicitábais los aranceles a Madrid, para así dar salida a vuestro textil -a precios de oro- en el resto de España y Cuba. Gente humilde murió allí en 1898 defendiendo los intereses de esa oligarquía.

@Gloriweins007 Sí, ya sé lo que vas a decir: las selecciones de fútbol. Salmond las cambiaría por vuestras competencias, pero aún así te voy a explicar el porqué de su existencia.
Escocia e Inglaterra son dos naciones distintas que comparten un mismo Estado, el Reino Unido, creado tras la unión dinástica de ambas junto con Gales e Irlanda del Norte.
Así, "británico" es una denominación legal o como mucho cultural. Por eso las selecciones "nacionales" son cuatro, porque hay cuatro naciones.

Por contra, España SÍ es una nación, por eso tiene sentido una selección española.
Cataluña TAMBIÉN es una nación, yo jamás lo negaré.
Ahora bien, Cataluña no es Escocia. Si los escoceses se independizan, un inglés sigue siendo inglés, sólo desaparece el Estado británico.
Pero si Cataluña u otra región se van, España como nación desaparece, porque solo existe como unión de todas sus partes. Ahí está el quid.

@fcbmartinso España es una nación de naciones, posiblemente una de las más complejas del mundo. Pero lo es, de eso no tengo ninguna duda. Tu comentario es calcado al de Prat de la Riba en el "Compendi de la doctrina nacionalista". Un idioma no crea una nación y una nación puede tener varios idiomas, como pasa en Suiza. La idea de que Cataluña es la única patria de los catalanes y el catalán su único idioma propio, es falsa, creada de la nada por el catalanismo a finales del s. XIX.

@fcbmartinso Lo que no existe es la "nación británica". A un inglés le podrá gustar más o menos una eventual secesión escocesa, pero ellos no tienen de qué preocuparse, porque la que es su verdadera patria, Inglaterra, está a salvo territorialmente, y los escoceses hablan inglés (sólo en España las lenguas regionales han sobrevivido, debe de ser que Madrit no es tan opresor como lo pintan). Aquí el castellano es perseguido -no es vehicular en la enseñanza-, y sin Cataluña España desaparece.

@HerrOttoKranz Pues yo creo que ellos lo sienten muy como suyo a reino unido, lo que pasa es que se suelen referir a su país como " the country" y a los paises consttuyentes como "the nation" por esa regla de tres la nación española no existiria.
Sabes perfectamente que no desapareceis si nosotros nos vamos y en cambio españa lleva intentando hacer desaparecer sus lenguas "regionales" desde 1714.

Si Escocia se independiza un inglés podrá lamentarlo, pero tiene su territorio intactos. Los nuevos Estados mantendrán la lengua inglesa. Pero España sin Cataluña no es España, es una masa amorfa.
