Here in New Zealand it's called the ASX. I have 2 of them both top spec AWD Sports. I have now spent 70,000kms behind the wheel. Much of this distance has been on our challenging alpine roads in the south & both cars have proved to be FAULTLESS. It's a fun car to drive, comfortable economical & extremely competent in all road conditions. It's not a rocket ship but I've never had any trouble keeping up with the traffic, the 2.0L is more than up to the job. Mitsi is a top 7 brand in NZ.
@cardude1992 Agreed! This car is SO good looking. It just needs an optional engine for those of us looking for performance that match its looks. And also, offer the V6 or turbo 4 with a 6 speed manual and all wheel drive. If only Mitsubishi would listen..
as poor as the reviews of the car are (three motor trend editors voted it the worst car of 2011), you've got to admit that it looks fantastic. i hope mitsubishi can get back to where they used to be, as a cool brand along with honda (when honda was still cool).
@cyberboy855 I agree so very much! it's so stupid the bad reviews that this car has gotten! This car looks gorgeous. It just needs an optional more potent engine! I really hope and wish Mitsubishi makes a comeback similar to Hyundai and gets back to where they used to be a couple years ago.
We wanted a great crossover with 4wd, outstanding MPG and a ton of tech, Outlander sport is the choice. The engineers that made the made the EVO what it is did their work on this car:
-lower drag coefficient than a civic and corvette
-400 lbs lighter than a base 2.4 outlander
-HIDs also project on the sides and light up 80 degrees, more than a Lexus LS (and they work well in snow and at night!)
Love to see anything that would kill the JUKE, but instead, this one stands far behind, 2.0L is way to go but not a way to win, reminds me of a 2000 RAV-4. we need a winner in this era, other than a JUKE.
@kalargyi I love both the Outlander Sport and the Juke. I'd love to have a car with the exterior of the Outlander Sport and with the interior of the Juke, and maybe the engine of the Juke as well. That'd be amazing! Too bad Mitsubishi decided to give it such a weak engine. I dont get it, it's as though they dont realize that all this car needs to sell a lot more is a better engine
@datpimpinboy You know, you're the only other person who sees the Outlander Sport as a competitor to the Juke. I believe that both cars are great, and that either are VERY practical, though I'm also perplexed as to why they'd call this the "Sport" yet equip it with such an anemic engine. Slap the Ralliart's engine in there and you would have a winner.
@banstaman They are competitors, I mean they are meant to serve the same purpose, they are similarly sized, similarly equipped, similarly priced, etc. I guess it could also compete with the Rogue. I love both of them, each has something great. The Juke is its engine and fun to drive characteristics, and the Outlander is the styling. I really think Mitsubishi should put a "beefier" engine on this car, either put a turbo, or put a v6 engine. That'd be a top seller, sadly they dont get it
@datpimpinboy It is beginning to be furstrating that Mitsubishi isn't paying much attention to competition in terms of engine performance/engine offerings; the same would apply to Suzuki with the Kizashi.
@banstaman I agree completely. Starting with the fact their V6 engine is a 3.0 instead of a 3.5 if i'm not mistaken, and then they decide to give this car a 2.0 4L engine. I mean if they give the Eclipse a V6 why on earth would they only offer a 4 cylinder in this car? All this car needs is a good engine and I'd buy it without a doubt. Oh, and they also need to offer the top of the line model WITH the manual transmission. And yeah, the Kizashi is another great looking car in need of more power.
They did what was smart thing to do! Gas is Expensive and they gave us good Gas millage on this car. If you want more power by sport car !!! daaaaaaaaa
@WhiteWi That's true. But I'm saying they could have had a V6 engine as an option on this car just like they used to have on the Eclipse, or used a turbocharged 4 cylinder. This car has everything I want except a good engine.
I purchased the Outlander Sport two months ago and love it. Even with its faults, it’s the best CUV for the money. As Ross said, it ain't exactly fast. The engine is loud at low speeds so driving around the neighborhood with the windows down is not an option unless you want a headache. Fortunately, the excessive noise goes away at highway speeds. If Mitsu will give it more power, make it quieter at low speeds and put in better stereo speakers, it will be a winner on the sales charts.
You forgot to mention that it competes with Subaru Forester. The Forester has more power and AWD standard. I actually went car shopping w/ my mom earlier this year and she ended up getting a 2011 Forester Limited with leather, huge moonroof, blu-tooth, heated mirrors, windshield/wipers, and seats.. loaded with everything for not much more than price of this Mitsu. It's a sweet ride.
Mitsubishi, like Suzuki, are the really crappy Japan car makers. I don't like either of them. If you want a Japan vehicle, buy a Nissan, Mazda, Toyota or Honda. They other two, forget them.
@dkt3wings Actually our diesel has been low-sulfur (under 15ppm) since 2006. The difference is because of higher taxes in the US on diesel vs gasoline. (The opposite is true in Europe, but for the same reason)
Really like the exterior design and the panaramic moonroof. I don't like the outdated navigation and cloth seats. Why can't Mitsubishi add leather as an option and upgrade the navi system??
Evolution Super Sedan??? It is a great car, but that does not automatically make it a super sedan. There are only a handful of super sedans out there, and they are no Mitsubishis to earn that crown.
But they really should make an option to have a more powerful engine such as the 3.0 L V6, and for my taste, and what is the biggest deal breaker for me with this car is that they only offer the manual tranmission with the base model, and I would wanna buy this car with all the options but with a manual transmission, not CVT, although I dont hate CVTs
Very good review Ross! He stated the facts clearly and very validly. I agree 100% with you that Mitsubishi is recovering from a strong downfall during the last few years, sadly caused by bad decisions of getting rid of the cars that brought them to glory in the 90s; but these cars still have the sporty soul of the brand and I'd definitely get this over a RAV4 or CR-V. Mitsubishi has had its problems but so have other brands. Hope they can recover for the sake of the 3 diamonds.
I wanna like this vehicle, but poor performance with less than stellar fuel economy and interior makes it a hard sell. I am more interested in the new Impreza that puts up similar power, but with better fuel economy and standard all-wheel drive. Yeah, the new Impreza has less power than the outgoing model, but Subaru can get away with it because the WRX will still be the brawny little compact it always was.
I was glad to find your channel on youtube, you somehow mix info and fun, wich kbb manages to do in just some of their videos. I heard that Jessi Lang is getting her PhD and I was wondering if she is coming back after she graduates? I mean sure Ross seems to be a good guy and great reviewer but I miss Jessi's passional attitude to cars - her reviews of GTI and Mustang GT are the best ever, actually I think they were as good as some of the TopGear UK videos.
@strife2xlr8 Sport doesnt necessarily mean the car has a 5.7 L V8 with brembo brakes and carbon fiber. I dont know why so many people can't get this, Mitsubishi is not the first brand to use the Sport trim or name to mean a light, sporty looking car. Many entry level cars are named sport, well consider this an "entry level" to the outlander.
@datpimpinboy I know thats not what sport means, and in fact you wont see cars with 5.7 v8's having to prove to itself and others that it's a sports car; simply by adding sport behind its' name. I also know mitsubishi is not the first brand to do this.. That being said, weather this is a Mitsubishi or not, adding "sport" behind a cars name without it have enough sporty characteristics is a farce. This vehicle should not be called a sport because of paddle shifters, period.
@datpimpinboy @datpimpinboy Yeah pal, i'll go drive a real sports cross, like the Ford Edge Sport. Please feel free to continue defending half assed efforts from car companies.
@strife2xlr8 Lol so the Edge Sport is a true sports croos according to you. Well, the Edge has a 3.7 L V6 and the "non-sport" outlander sport has a 2.0 L 4 cylinder, yet the Edge is only one second quicker? Oh yeah, certainly a very impressive sports cross.
@datpimpinboy According to me :)? No, but according to the facts; the ford has sport tuned independent suspension, R&P steering and a proper enthusiast engine. One of many good examples of Sport cross. Oh and you mentioned its also faster from 0-60. Ross said it himself, it feels slow.. Im wondering why your defending this thing to the death? Did you actually invest money into this? Its totally okay if you did, im not judging you or anyone. I just think its lacking; a very reasonable opinion.
@strife2xlr8 No I did not, neither am I defending this car in particular. Apparantly, it's difficult for you to comprehend that the only reason for my argument is that you seem uncapable of understand the simple concept that car manufacturers use the term "sport" to denominate anything from a sporty looking vehicle, to the base trim, to a lighter version, to a true sports version of a car. But then you seem to have to take it on Mitsubishi for using it in this car, which is pathetic IMO.
I like Hyundai designs way better, hes right though about the sports cars they were hott but thats the only good thing they ever made. The rest were always just yuck.
Very wrong, calculation for US gallon consumption of 25/31 in l/100 km is 9.41/7.59 and that is not really good, so I'm interested where did you get these numbers?
@TheMacbooksRock15 Workin' hard or hardly workin' not sure which. ;-) We're posting her 2012 Audi A6 video on Thursday. We've had an incredible work load lately but rest assured you'll see her bright smiling face soon. :-)
my sisters Cavalier has nearly as much horsepower. wow mitsubishi. put in a bigger engine so this dinky one doesn't have to waste fuel by revving so much.
Why not a diesel engine and manual transmission? More torque, more gas mileage. An Outlander Sport Evo would be really fun though, but the way you describe them, the interior, first this, first that really makes them seem like an archaic company.
I like the way it looks under the hood... you can actually see the engine and other parts--they're not covered in plastic panels!
Emme didn't drive it because there's no sunroof. Holla! haha
Need to make it a hybrid with 300 something foot pounds of combined torque and get near 40 mpg. That's be a winner worth $30k :) Whatever happened to Jessi Lang? Haven't seen one of her reviews in a while :(
@bottomlayer What about the higher diesel price? Seems the only places that sell it more reasonable is the truck stops. I still like the hybrid idea. Less money going to those foreign countries for their oil. We need to have Made in the USA bio-fuels made with USA grown crops. I do understand your thoughts on the diesel motor as my dad drives a RAM 2500 diesel 6 speed manual. It has the mad torque :)
@countach27 What if you could have a gasoline hybrid with 300 ft lb of TQ and running on the way less expensive gasoline? Diesel prices over here are way higher than gas. I know the EU people always speak small displacement diesel motors, but the fact is in the USA we won't have those motors for whatever reasons. Likely the crooked oil companies making sure we don't have them available here. Who knows? Oh well...
@WE0H Sucks to hear that, in Europe their prices are about equal with diesel probably being a bit cheaper. The situation in the US is strange, correct me if I'm wrong but diesel is actually cheaper to produce than gasoline. It's not that I'm a fan of diesel myself though, it's just that it makes way more sense in bigger cars and especially in all types of SUVs.
@countach27 I think the oil companies are crooked in the US and our crooked government supports them :( Not a thing we can do about it either :( That's my reason's for supporting alternative fuels and hybrids to lessen our contribution to those crooks.
@countach27 Can't. Despite what people of Europe think or emissions laws are far stricter, hence the difficulty of bringing a diesel. VW has done it and Mazda will soon too, along with Chevy believe it or not.
Great review as always Ross. I'd still feel to uneasy buying a mitsubishi of any sort now. For a small SUV, or SAV as I believe they are called now, I'd do a Subaru Forester hands down. Wouldn't you?
Man those paddle shifts are annoyingly huge..No Turbo engine Mitsubishi that's not like you. Mitsubishi is coming slowly they need something to keep themselves alive. I hope they are going in the right direction with this one. Hope you continue to strive Mitsubishi we know you can do it.. Take the chances.. ; )

Very wrong, calculation for US gallon consumption of 25/31 in l/100 km is 9.41/7.59 and that is not really good, so I'm interested where did you get these numbers?

I wonder why they put the 2.0 in there instead of the 2.4 in the 2010+ Lancer GTS.

my sisters Cavalier has nearly as much horsepower. wow mitsubishi. put in a bigger engine so this dinky one doesn't have to waste fuel by revving so much.

Holla! haha

CR-V? RAV4? Nissan Rogue? I thought that's what the regular Outlander was for? Isn't this more on the lines of the Juke and the Suzuki Sx4?

Mitsubishi FTW!

Need to make it a hybrid with 300 something foot pounds of combined torque and get near 40 mpg. That's be a winner worth $30k :) Whatever happened to Jessi Lang? Haven't seen one of her reviews in a while :(
WE0H 5 months ago
@WE0H why not a diesel engine like they used to offer on the Jeep Liberty? It had just under 300 lb ft and mpg in the mid-20s
bottomlayer 5 months ago
@bottomlayer What about the higher diesel price? Seems the only places that sell it more reasonable is the truck stops. I still like the hybrid idea. Less money going to those foreign countries for their oil. We need to have Made in the USA bio-fuels made with USA grown crops. I do understand your thoughts on the diesel motor as my dad drives a RAM 2500 diesel 6 speed manual. It has the mad torque :)
WE0H 5 months ago
@WE0H Americans are silly, just put in a 1.8 diesel engine from the European version with 150hp and 221 ft*lb and get 42mpg combined.
countach27 5 months ago 43
@countach27 is that Imperial MPGs or the MPGs American uses?
itsTiLER 5 months ago
@itsTiLER That figure was in US gallons, consumption in liters would be 6.7/4.8/5.5 l/100km urban/extra-urban/combined.

Who knows? Oh well...
WE0H 5 months ago
@WE0H Sucks to hear that, in Europe their prices are about equal with diesel probably being a bit cheaper. The situation in the US is strange, correct me if I'm wrong but diesel is actually cheaper to produce than gasoline. It's not that I'm a fan of diesel myself though, it's just that it makes way more sense in bigger cars and especially in all types of SUVs.
countach27 5 months ago
@countach27 I think the oil companies are crooked in the US and our crooked government supports them :( Not a thing we can do about it either :( That's my reason's for supporting alternative fuels and hybrids to lessen our contribution to those crooks.

@WE0H Sadly corruption exists everywhere.

its not an american car its japanise
martin9545 5 months ago
@martin9545 I know it's Japanese, I said they should put in the engine from the European VERSION of this model (the Mitsubishi ASX).
countach27 5 months ago
@countach27 while those engines are more effiecient, they do not meet our emissions standards.
nickL7389 5 months ago
@countach27 Why? diesel fuel just cost more.
hawkermustang 5 months ago
@countach27 Can't. Despite what people of Europe think or emissions laws are far stricter, hence the difficulty of bringing a diesel. VW has done it and Mazda will soon too, along with Chevy believe it or not.
flatblackstrat 5 months ago
@countach27 I agree wholeheartedly! I don't understand why we don't over here. I guess it just makes too much sense.
crimsondrifter01 5 months ago
@countach27 Hopefully when GDiesel becomes mainstream, the US will get more diesel options..

Great review as always Ross. I'd still feel to uneasy buying a mitsubishi of any sort now. For a small SUV, or SAV as I believe they are called now, I'd do a Subaru Forester hands down. Wouldn't you?

@tcbecht88
especially when they have the s edition with 193kw.....

@203132 hmmmm. not sure what 193 kw means. Guessing its the European equivalent to Hp? and Do you mean the Subaru or Mitsu?
tcbecht88 5 months ago
@tcbecht88 193kw = 259hp

@juozazole oh ok thanks!

Take the chances.. ; )
