The World Series was not on the line anymore when Buckner made his error. The Sox had been within one strike of the title when Stanley threw the wildpitch - that was the TRUE failure.
One of the most gritty tough players in history. Only idiots judge the guy on one play and ignore a great career and the fact that without Buckner the Sox would have never even made the playoffs.
Plenty of blame to go around in '86. Macnamara for pulling Clemens early, for leaving Shiralidi in too long, for leaving Buckner in. Then for leaving Hurst in too long in game 7, for not using Boyd in game 7. Then there's Stanley's wild pitch in game 6, leaving 14 on base, etc. etc.
yeah well uss voyager has a point. I'm a mets fan and you know what we dont lose becuause of some stupid boogeyman curse bull shit, we lose when we suck and win when we dont suck. over. end of story. Bill Buckner should be applauded for forgiving BOSTON not the other way around.
That's Boston's theme. Blame everyone, but themselves. They Traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees, but it was the Yankees fault the Red Sox never made it back to the World Series. When they finally made it to the World Series, they had to buy it for a billion and a half bucks. They can't keep players because they blame them everytime they don't win a game. Buckner was just a huge scapegoat, because Boston knew they couldn't win the series.
This is the most over-hyped error of all time. It in no way lost Boston the Series. If he made that play Boston doesn't win. It's still tied. And then they went out and lost game 7 anyway. Bill got screwed and becamse a classic scapegoat..
The reason people don't forgive him is because u don't win a championship everyday even if the pitching staff wasn't perfect I could have got that ground ball that he missed it may only be 1error but an error that lost the title. But all in all it was 23 years ago and he can't take it back so I can't hate him the sox can Always win another championship so what does it matter now
No, Bucker's error did not cost the Red Sox the title. Calvin Shiraldi gave up 3 straight hits, and Bob Stanley threw the wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score in Game 6. Where are the goat horns for those two? And in Game 7 when the Red Sox lead 3-0 in the 6th, Bruce Hurst gave up 3 earned runs to allow the Mets to tie the game. Then Shiraldi allowed the go-ahead HR to Ray Knight. Plenty of other goats Buckner made 1 error only! But the title wasn't dependant on that one play

@eamrhein29 No it didn't cost Boston the title. The wild pitch did the three hits before did. It's still debatable whether or not Buckner would have been able to make it to the bag before Mookie did. His play didn't decide the fate of that game. One play rarely decides the fate of a baseball game. You ever play baseball?
Actually, in his prime Buckner was a darned good player. Too bad people make 'Monday morning' judgements about him, even though others on the team could be cited for their misplays, which helped the Sox to lose. As a Mets fan, I have the series on tape. One can pick out 12 other Sox failures which led to their demise. Several of them were by the manager himself.
Many of the Buckner posts are from people too young to know the context of the series. Mrbeans.."UR not that good" either.
@noclouds111 I agree. Buckner had an almost .300 average and had almost 3000 career hits. he was a pretty good hitter. By this time he was old and couldn't get down enough to make that play. He was aged well past his prime
Buckner is to blame for the 1986 World Series loss. I mean it had nothing to do with the fact that Schiraldi pitched like absolute garbage, and it certainly was not the fact that Stanley's wild pitch brought in the tying run, while putting Knight on second base. It was all Buckner.
It was also Buckner's fault that the Red Sox blew a three run lead in game seven....................... (Sarcasm here.)
I've read that Macnamara told Buckner that Stapleton was going to replace him for defensive purposes in the bottom of the tenth (as had been the case when Stapleton came in for him in the bottom of the ninth in game one), but that Buckner said "NO!" Who knows if the Sox would have won in the extra innings. I know Rice made the last out in the top of the tenth. So I think that would have been the 5, 6, and 7 hitters for the Sox in the top of the inning.
That error took the Curse of the Babe up a notch for sure.
