when a franchise exist in a city,it is not only ticket sales that support that franchise, but luxury suites, sponsorship, merchandise sales etc,my thought is does Winnipeg have enough to support all of this, walk around any new arena built what do you see advertising and souviner shops on the concouses
I agree that it's Corporate support that helps run a franchise however; Winnipeg's Corp base is very much underrated. There are currently over 100 companies and individuals waiting for a suite at the MTSC & many that currently share suites. You'll find this to be the same when the NHL Returns. No worries; Smart business men like Chipman and Thomson have done their research and wouldn't be putting a deal together if they didn't know for a fact it would work.
@JHendrix70 I would like to see a team back in Winnipeg, maybe move Florida,Atlanta,or even bring Pheonix back there, was just asking was not totally sure about it
"the Nordiques moving to Colorado worked and it still has because their fans still sell out Pepsi Center (case in point). "
Not anymore it seems. It seems since the team isn't doing well anymore that fans come less. They draw about 14000-16000 a game now. It might be because of the economy but in Canada economy is also starting to get in bad shape and the small markets, despite no longer selling out every games, still draw over 18000 per game
THIS is why Canada needs more NHL teams. Absolutely no American team gets this much fan support. If it weren't for Bettman's interference, the Preds would likely be in Hamilton or Winnipeg (The two locations that were expressed interest for by buyers).
the only american team that get a lot of fan support is my St. Louis Blues. making the playoffs or not, they still sellout almost every home game. and ive been a blues fan since i was 3 years old.
Detroit? Pittsburgh? Capitals? Buffalo? NY Rangers? I could go on.
The two hockey games with the largest attendance records in ice hockey history were played in the US. Michigan State Spartans vs Michigan Wolverines, and the other game was the 2008 Winter Classic, Buffalo vs Penguins.
For the Stanely Cup playoffs the record for attendance is a Flyers vs Lightning game in '96.
I mean I agree some hockey teams are in RETARDED american cities. Don't sell us ALL short.
@Desarollo Buffalo gets a lot, and I mean a lot of support from Southern Ontario. If Hamilton got a team then half of the regular fan base would probably be gone!! When Toronto play in Buffalo it's like a home game for them!! Detroit has amazing fans all around North America, but recently has had some trouble (economic reasons). Pittsburgh and Washington support their teams now because they're winning! NYR, well yeah they do have a solid fan base. I agree-Northern USA states love their hockey!
@jrer58 You are simply mistaken on your comments about Buffalo. I don't know what's so hard to understand about this, but Buffalo's season ticket base has never been more than 15% Canadian. Never ever. And even when the Leafs and Habs visit, there are never more than 4 or 5,000 opposing fans in the building. Most of that comes from season ticket holders that rip off these Canadians for an insane profit. So please, before you dis Buffalo, do your research.
@tjd92295 I don't know about that, but I do know when Buffalo hosts an NFL game, there are TONS of Canadians attending. I've also heard from people who live in Toronto, that, the prices, and availability of tickets to Maple Leaf's games, are prohibitive. Buffalo, are available. as long as they're willing to drive an hour and a half or so....why do all the bars feature "Canadian" beers??
I remember this like it was yesterday. This game turned out to be crucial because the Jets and Ducks both finished with 78 points, the only difference was the Jets had 1 more win.
Had the Jets tied or lost this game, the 8th seed would have gone to the Ducks.
Well to be fair: Anaheim and San Jose are two franchises that seem to work & maintain a successful approach to being self sufficient. NYI On the other hand might just be the next team to move! As crazy as that sounds, with the amount of history they have, they just won't be able to make it without a new arena! The owner of the NYI ( Wang: A successful property developer ) Only bought the franchise so eventually, when the would move, he could develop that land the current arena is on! Scam...
I think NYI have a contract that force them to stay in NY for 20 or so more years or something, so they are less likely to move anytime soon. If their owners don't have enough money I'm sure they will do even worse than relocating within these years: they will fold.
I'm a massive Canucks fan, and I didn't exactly love the Jets back in the day. But seriously, seeing such an amazing hockey town with amazing and loyal fans have it's team snatched from them and dropped into the middle of a sandy wasteland where people don't even know what the fuck a puck is by a smarmy, greasy-haired lawyer bastard breaks my heart. I love the game, and I love this great country, and taking hockey teams away from THE hockey country is just straight-up retarded.
I'm a devils for a long time but I remember when the Jets moved to phoenix. I couldn't believe how Bettman was and still is indifferent toward Canada. I'm from New York, but I want Winnipeg to have a team. The fan base there is unbelievable and I respect that. Bettman needs to get thrown out of the NHL.
I could not agree more. As an old North Stars fan, it was crushing to lose our team. This league now is kind of a joke. It's Fairies/Disney on Ice. Little scoring, little physical play. They need to cull about four teams, and move several others back to where they belong--Winnipeg, Quebec, etc.
No one can replace the fans we had, not even Edmonton whom had just as passionate fans as we do! We were and still are very community orientated and will depend strongly on that signature to survive in the NHL. This will be our backbone and we will succeed by looking at our history and how we supported our team till its bitter end! Winnipeg was and still is the BEST HOCKEY TOWN IN THE WORLD!
Last regular season game in 1996. We knew that they were moving at this point and we all came out, showed out true colours and passion for the game! This was certainly a highlight in Winnipeg history.
Ahem.....Stanley Cup Finals in 96??? I think not. I think you meant making the playoffs in 96....where my Wings stomped them (I can't gloat too much though, Colorado ate our lunch).
Or just resign and let a hockey purist become commissioner. A passionate hockey city such as Winnipeg can't have a team while Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona have six teams playing in front of fans who care about football, football, football, baseball, basketball, Nascar, and um, what's that sport that "gets no ratings" and is too "violent?"
That's exactly what's wrong with the NHL right now. That and games where one team wins and the other doesn't lose.
