  • I always thought it was so cool to know he was a Beach Boy, even as just a replacement for Brian on a tour, and as a session hand

  • great video! it goes to show you he was a great talent till he got on the highway to hell, the last 25 yrs. he hasn't looked or sounded anything like he used to but he can still master a guitar and draw a hot crowd.

  • the beginning guitar lick on fun fun fun was glens own writing

  • No it wasn't! That lick is a straight Chuck Berry rip off.

    Mark

  • @mrmlavoie

That was not a rip off. It was an attempt to praise Chuck Berry"s style. They blended The Four Freshmen style with the style of Chuck Berry to get their style. Copying is the highest form of flattery.

Besides, Chuck was credited on the record.

  • @Okiemom50 The judge in the case thought differently.....

  • Look at that "Elivs" outfit! I say, what were we thining in those days?!!

  • Is that a wig????? What year is this?

  • Surfer Girl, what a beauty.

  • Some of you wish you coiuld play as well as Glen

  • This is so wrong yet so right LOL He's a good singer but Beach Boys songs?

  • yes top rated studio musician before he took out on own he did much of the guitar work on top bands albums in the 60's he is was well respected for his guitar work and in demand.

  • So wrong yet so right LOL

  • Does anybody know where this concert was?

  • April 1977-Royal Festival Hall, London England.

  • 1977 Royal Festival Hall in London England.

  • For any of you who equate Glen Campbell with only C/W ....got news for you....he was very sought after by many artists long before we actually heard any of the songs Glen recorded.

  • RPS122;

Yes, the guitar is an Ovation Bluebird 12-String. There were about eight of them (approx 3 12-strings, 5 6-strings) custom built specifically for Glen.

  • I think he does a great job and his timing is on spot !

  • Master performer!

  • Master performer!

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • I'm pretty sure it's an Ovation solid body 12-string

  • I saw the Beach Boys at the Greek Theater and Captain and Tennile got up and sang with them. I dont think Glen was there that night.

  • Having toured with The Beach Boys in their heyday and played on some of their best records then he is bound to feel at home with their stuff. He is a seriously talented guy!

  • I believe this album is from the "Live in Royal Festival Hall" I love his music since I've heard them as a youth. I've just purchase this mp3,320kbps album from amazon - waiting for it to arrive including his "Highway" album. Way to go Winestoned Cowboy!

  • I saw Glen Campbell perform last night in Australia. His final song was Surfin' USA. He didn't do Bonaparte's Retreat though.

  • 3:21 he plays it very good! and he sings Surfer Girl really good!!! maybe he have talent??

  • At the height of his career, Glen Campbell owned the largest house in Los Angeles.

  • @miguelofthehillcount You are right 17000 sq feet my dad his cousin was at the open house party my dad said he couldnt afford a house like his but after seeing the bathroom he said he built a huge one like his haha.

  • First time I have seen this. God Bless GC you are truly an awesome multi talented guy. Love the Beach Boys! Yeaaaaaah! :o)

  • Does anyone know who the gals singing are??

  • Billie Barnum, Ann White, Stephanie Spruill.

  • he plays bagpipes too...very multi talented did sessionwork with many including monkees

  • Beatle cut, Elvis costume, singing BB? Reguardless, he is talented. I highly respect is talent.

  • The very first BB concert I attended was in Jacksonville, Fla. and Glen was in the lineup. I remember distinctly because Mike (useless) Love announced that Brian wasn't able to attend. I thought that was odd, but he was really good and the concert was great. Just remembered that. You forget details as you get older, you know? NO comment! Glen was definitely multi-talented!

  • This is from "Live with the Royal Festival Orchestra" in London,,,about 1977,,,

  • According to how young he is on this show

    this must be late 60's.

  • does anyone know about when this took place?

  • summer 1977...I have the original albumn.

  • Glen Campbell is a great entertainer!

  • To clear things up: Glen Campbell played on a number of Beach Boys songs as a session guitarist from about 1963-66 (including "Good Vibrations"), and Brian Wilson produced a great single for him, "Guess I'm Dumb", in 1965. He toured as a replacement for Brian Wilson in late 1964, I believe, after Brian's first nervous breakdown caused him to stop touring (therefore he did play bass onstage). Ultimately Bruce Johnston replaced Campbell. Hope that helps.

    Great clip, thanks for posting!

  • @SurferJoe1 thanks always wanted to Know

  • @SurferJoe1 Glen also performed on many Jan and Dean records as well.

  • @ngnnick1967 Yeah, I'd love to see a good list of his known session work. I think I remember reading once that he was one of three guitarists who took a crack at the flamenco opening for the Monkees' "Valleri", which I believe was ultimately performed by Louis Shelton, who did a lot of their signature guitar.

Think I remember hearing both Campbell's and Billy Strange's names spoken during the tracking session for the BBs' "Dance Dance Dance"- GC probably acoustic, BS probably electric.

  • Sorry,

He played bass for the BB's in the 60's

  • Heard him being interviewed about his time with beach boys and because he was mainly doing third harmony, his voice developed by half an octave. Top session guitarist as well.

  • Great! Glenn on 12 string! But the volume is SO weak! Few knew that Glenn played studio and toured with Beach Boys for short while when Al Jardine went back to dental school.

Glenn needs to come back to Vegas! We need to see him again!

  • Glenn replaced Brian after his 1st breakdown,

touring & playing bass, he also was a top session guitarist & played on several BB cuts, not sure about Al Jardine needing to be replaced..

  • Glen has stood the test of time, he was a star and still is; a great musician, singer and entertainer;)

  • Great guitarist. He always get great tone and sounds out of whatever ax he's playing. Love the 12-string here.

  • I'm a Beach BOYS fan but I don't like "surfer girl" sorry, great vid!!

  • love this i love both glenn campbell and the beach boys keep posting more glenn campbell

  • I've heard top artists say Campbell was the greatest talent they'd ever seen - tremendous vocals and a gifted guitarist.

  • Around what year would this of been?

  • April 21-22, 1977...two-nighter at the Royal Festival Hall in England.

  • Thanks.

  • A little rip off from Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen"

  • I understand he played on the record "Tequila."

  • I've always loved his silk smooth voice, but I never realised what a great guitarist he is

  • In fact he was a highly respected session guitarist before singing hits.

  • Just another slice of his amazing talent. Love ya Glen!

  • and 2 top it off glenn is a recovering alcoholic

  • Recovering... not hardly.. he likes it!

  • under recorded do not waste your time

  • Is it any wonder that Glen Campbell was hand picked to join The Beach Boys as Brian's replacement? After all, Glen is a musician's studio musician. Definitely one of the most under rated studio musician/guitar player in rock 'n roll history. Oh, yes ...he had a solo career thing on the side as well! Love and Mercy.

  • one of the best sessions players ever,

I bet he wishes he was that young.

  • Nix the Vegas look including the hair and everything before "Surfing USA". That's my Glen! Wonder who sold him on the Vegas look? Tanya maybe?

  • I actually Campbell with the BB in 1965. He was perfect....played the white Fender bass, sang all the high parts, and looked the part with his blonde slicked back hair. But this schmaltzy piece of shit medley makes him look ridiculous. Glen 'went Vegas'.......

  • Actually, the neat trick was playing with the Beach Boys, live and on records for a period of time whil Brian was in rehab, and like nobody noticed.

  • Um, everybody noticed. Have you gone mad? Everyone knew it wasn't Brian.

  • I had several friends who were big Beach Boy fans. THEY hadn't noticed. I can't, and shouldn't, speak for the rest of the fans.

  • My friends and I saw Glen about 3 years ago in Morristown NJ. My friend hoped he'd do some Beach Boys. After he took his bows, he came back out and said, "First time I came to NJ, I was a Beach Boy. He then followed with a terrific 20 - 30 minutes of all Beach Boy songs. My friend was happy.

  • That's a great story, man. :)

    Peace

  • It wasn't when he was in rehab. Brian didn't tour because he had stage fright.

  • I won't belabor the point, as I only know what I've read. Either way, Glen subbed for him and did the job well enough to keep the group together.

I even knew Beach Boy fans who didn't seem to notice.

  • hey bluebird guitar boy, your easy to wind up.BOO hoo hoo.

  • Why don't you post one of YOUR vids and show us how it's done...no? Thought not.

  • A wonderful medley of songs, and I wish I could see some clips of Glen as a Beach Boy. He is a wonderful singer, and must have enjoyed with the hottest group ever! Anne

  • he was also a session guitarist on mnay beach boy tracks before and after his short stint with them on stage. Ge also plays guitar on many elvis movie soundtrack songs. he may not have been in the studio with elvisince elvis probably did the vocals at a later date in hollywood

  • Elvis always sang his songs`live` with the band in the studio , not after they had recorded their parts. That`s why RCA have so many alternate takes and versions of his songs because EP/band always had to go back to the start if they made a mistake

  • OK girls... For those of you younger than 35yrs old you don't know GC or The Boys... Not many singers can say they were a member of a legendary group, have his own TV show on NBC for three season, win numerous grammies and still perform into his 70's... and come back from a DUI arrest... Give the guy some credit... you too will someday be a "old" person!!

  • Nice pants

  • Glenn Cambell was in fact a Beachboy back in the 60's

for acouple of month's & went with them on tour. And

thats why he sound's so damn good doing the Beachboy's.

& as far him been a has been...hell know!

tha guy's an awsome guitar player & could

blow many so called hot musicians doors off.

check him out "LIVE" dare ya! dont let looks

fool ya. having long hair & leather dont mean shit.

  • Sorpresas tiene la vida. Brian estaba entonces en el pozo y el grupo vivía de las rentas...

  • I just saw him at Pepperdine. Performing "MacArthur Park" with songwriter Jimmy Webb, the 70-year-old Campbell played a blazing lead guitar just as well as when he started out as a session guitarist 45+ years ago.

  • excellent vid. glen mustve made a great beach boys! excellent voice that night!

  • TO: valliseasons1

Glenn Cambell was in fact A BEACHBOY

for a couple of months & toured with

them back in the 60's. That's why you

see him here doing the beachboy's so damn good!.

    *winks*

  • good video

  • Great live clip from a "has-been" when he was really a star - my sister saw him live lat year, he was feeling no pain and laughing about it...

  • What exactly makes him a "has been ?"

  • The fact that He has never "been".

  • Ha OK. That makes no sense at all, but have a great day.

  • great video, who knew? thx for time and date bluebird.

  • Yes, this is "Live At the Royal Festival Hall" (in England) and was recorded over two nights; April 21 and 22 of 1977.

  • Great LIVE footage of Glen back in the70's or early 80's. Does anyone know what concert this was?
