great video! it goes to show you he was a great talent till he got on the highway to hell, the last 25 yrs. he hasn't looked or sounded anything like he used to but he can still master a guitar and draw a hot crowd.
That was not a rip off. It was an attempt to praise Chuck Berry"s style. They blended The Four Freshmen style with the style of Chuck Berry to get their style. Copying is the highest form of flattery.
yes top rated studio musician before he took out on own he did much of the guitar work on top bands albums in the 60's he is was well respected for his guitar work and in demand.
For any of you who equate Glen Campbell with only C/W ....got news for you....he was very sought after by many artists long before we actually heard any of the songs Glen recorded.
Yes, the guitar is an Ovation Bluebird 12-String. There were about eight of them (approx 3 12-strings, 5 6-strings) custom built specifically for Glen.
Having toured with The Beach Boys in their heyday and played on some of their best records then he is bound to feel at home with their stuff. He is a seriously talented guy!
I believe this album is from the "Live in Royal Festival Hall" I love his music since I've heard them as a youth. I've just purchase this mp3,320kbps album from amazon - waiting for it to arrive including his "Highway" album. Way to go Winestoned Cowboy!
@miguelofthehillcount You are right 17000 sq feet my dad his cousin was at the open house party my dad said he couldnt afford a house like his but after seeing the bathroom he said he built a huge one like his haha.
The very first BB concert I attended was in Jacksonville, Fla. and Glen was in the lineup. I remember distinctly because Mike (useless) Love announced that Brian wasn't able to attend. I thought that was odd, but he was really good and the concert was great. Just remembered that. You forget details as you get older, you know? NO comment! Glen was definitely multi-talented!
To clear things up: Glen Campbell played on a number of Beach Boys songs as a session guitarist from about 1963-66 (including "Good Vibrations"), and Brian Wilson produced a great single for him, "Guess I'm Dumb", in 1965. He toured as a replacement for Brian Wilson in late 1964, I believe, after Brian's first nervous breakdown caused him to stop touring (therefore he did play bass onstage). Ultimately Bruce Johnston replaced Campbell. Hope that helps.
@ngnnick1967 Yeah, I'd love to see a good list of his known session work. I think I remember reading once that he was one of three guitarists who took a crack at the flamenco opening for the Monkees' "Valleri", which I believe was ultimately performed by Louis Shelton, who did a lot of their signature guitar.
Think I remember hearing both Campbell's and Billy Strange's names spoken during the tracking session for the BBs' "Dance Dance Dance"- GC probably acoustic, BS probably electric.
Heard him being interviewed about his time with beach boys and because he was mainly doing third harmony, his voice developed by half an octave. Top session guitarist as well.
Great! Glenn on 12 string! But the volume is SO weak! Few knew that Glenn played studio and toured with Beach Boys for short while when Al Jardine went back to dental school.
Glenn needs to come back to Vegas! We need to see him again!
Is it any wonder that Glen Campbell was hand picked to join The Beach Boys as Brian's replacement? After all, Glen is a musician's studio musician. Definitely one of the most under rated studio musician/guitar player in rock 'n roll history. Oh, yes ...he had a solo career thing on the side as well! Love and Mercy.
I actually Campbell with the BB in 1965. He was perfect....played the white Fender bass, sang all the high parts, and looked the part with his blonde slicked back hair. But this schmaltzy piece of shit medley makes him look ridiculous. Glen 'went Vegas'.......
My friends and I saw Glen about 3 years ago in Morristown NJ. My friend hoped he'd do some Beach Boys. After he took his bows, he came back out and said, "First time I came to NJ, I was a Beach Boy. He then followed with a terrific 20 - 30 minutes of all Beach Boy songs. My friend was happy.
A wonderful medley of songs, and I wish I could see some clips of Glen as a Beach Boy. He is a wonderful singer, and must have enjoyed with the hottest group ever! Anne
he was also a session guitarist on mnay beach boy tracks before and after his short stint with them on stage. Ge also plays guitar on many elvis movie soundtrack songs. he may not have been in the studio with elvisince elvis probably did the vocals at a later date in hollywood
Elvis always sang his songs`live` with the band in the studio , not after they had recorded their parts. That`s why RCA have so many alternate takes and versions of his songs because EP/band always had to go back to the start if they made a mistake
OK girls... For those of you younger than 35yrs old you don't know GC or The Boys... Not many singers can say they were a member of a legendary group, have his own TV show on NBC for three season, win numerous grammies and still perform into his 70's... and come back from a DUI arrest... Give the guy some credit... you too will someday be a "old" person!!
I just saw him at Pepperdine. Performing "MacArthur Park" with songwriter Jimmy Webb, the 70-year-old Campbell played a blazing lead guitar just as well as when he started out as a session guitarist 45+ years ago.
I always thought it was so cool to know he was a Beach Boy, even as just a replacement for Brian on a tour, and as a session hand
