  • top man..

  • Oh so true. I love all things British so I am always reading and seeking out new things. I watch a lot of BBC America and I find myself-without even realizing it-saying a lot of phrases that would be considered from across the pond.

  • I come from a place where there are people with French accents who don't speak French and people with Scots accents who don't speak Gaelic. They've kept the accents without the language, which I find fascinating. I like your accent, Peter. It's not one of those "cut-glass" accents that makes a person want to sit up straight and mind their manners.

  • Sorry. Grammar alert! Should have been "his or her manners."

  • Love Mississippi John.....Yeah man

  • I love this song! The guitar playing is just wonderful! Very Nice:)

  • Then what are you doing here watching it. You have watched a couple and left hater messages. Go away if you don't like it! Most disrespectful!

  • Hi Peter, I think what you had to say about languages and dialects was interesting. As you suggested, most of our references not long ago were from our immediate neighbours. Now, with the media the way it is we get a sampling of many dialects. I guess we will have to wait and see which one ends up winning out

  • Yeah man! I quite agree with that sentiment!

    Hugs to you from Mexico.

  • I'm an American who has long loved the British accents and ways of saying things, whether Cockney or the clear tones of the BBC news. The spellings are even kind of fun sometimes (favourite, programme, etc). :-)

  • YEAH MAN! Hahahaaahaaha !!

  • nice one Peter, We need the old Dunkirk Spirit Back Again in our country and nicer people!!! Thanks for your English Ramblings old chum, please carry on for years to come

  • John Hurt left school a 9 'o'clock?A.M or P.M. He was either very smart or very dim then! HAHA. Yes peter there is always an off button but i'm guessing not many people are using it in your case. yet another great piece of youtube-ing. thank you.

  • ye cant beat the old ones

  • you dont need more strusture in your videos dont worry about it, we just love your opinions and want to hear ure wisdom oh old one! i dont know why i havnt subscribed up until now but i can soon fix that!

  • hi peter.. can you show us some of your pictures back in the 50's or 60's.. i want to hear your stories from those pictures! please....

  • marry me peter

  • ROTFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  • Peter, thank you so much for sharing your wonderful lucid observations and recollections. You are a contemporary of my parents (long since past), a fellow artist, a fellow musicologist and a true treasure to many, including this "'L'il' ol' boy from Texas". Peace and Godspeed.

  • first video of urs i've seen and i likded it...you remind me of one of my uncles...good video

  • Cool man...reeaall Cool!!

  • Peter, theres something behind you... Wait it looks like... It is... It's ET :P

    I see your point :)

  • Neat music at the end. I actually like it. :)

Keep making these videos. I love to listen to you. :)

  • i absolutely hate all the people on here who would post negative comments, have some respect!! peter is the best!!

  • copyright violation-elton john music will delete your account!

  • oh shut it you!

  • I suppose you also know Sonny and Terry's music? I looked around here so my guitarist son could be exposed to the blues harp, and found it wasn't easy. I could not recall Sonny or Terry's last names. Finally, I saw that they were Brown and Mcgee. Not certain of the spelling.

  • More, Peter! More! I want some more! Don't wait long, Dear. Melinda, South Mississippi

  • Nice topic, i noticed you say Crikey, like Australians. just an observation.

    great to see you again.

  • You're the best thing on youtube ever! Best wishes to you and long may you reign!!

  • Old age is not a disease—it is strength and survivorship, triumph over all kinds of vicissitudes and disappointments, trials and illnesses. - Maggie Kuhn (b. 1905), U.S. civil rights activist, author. quoted in New Age (Feb. 1979).

  • I'm from London, UK and I'm still learning to speak English.

  • "What you've got may be better than what you dream about". Nice.

  • Havent you realized that on your own? Geeze, do people have to be close to death to realize such things, or be told by wise old men? People today, they dont understand or appreciate the precious life they are given.

  • Hi. I enjoy listening to your stories. Thank you.

  • Haha.. left school at 9.. :p

  • we love you mate!!!

    your great!!!

Cya soon again on you tube :)

(( and stop teesing the guy and stop mailing him bad things en so... or i will teach you something

    Greetz Mike.

  • oh your great keep making these vids :D im proud 2 b english now :D

  • Why are you involved wuth Argent009? Why did you approve him to put that video online? I think you made a big mistake allowing that video to go online. Sorry Peter I think it was a huge mistake..Seeya..

  • Haha, I enjoyed your little joke at the end. Keep making videos. You're very interesting and enjoyable to listen to.

  • How about 1-41 on DVD for $30? I'll cross my legs, sit on the floor, eat popcorn and and listen endlessly to grandad like I did when I was 12.... Make this happen Peter.

  • Well I talk to aussie girls all the time, then again I live in australia, but also I got an american mate and its rubbing off onto me at times where I will speak with the american accent but now hes losing his amex and speaking aussie tongue.

  • As an American, I've always considered British English superior. But perhaps it's an unfair comparison since I mostly compare the language of my friends (teenagers) to the language of respected people on BBC and such.

I talk to an Australian girl online sometimes and it's amazing how much of her language is foreign to me.

  • God bless you Peter. You are a treasure.

  • Great job Peter. Keep up the good work. I enjoyed it. Blues forever.

  • Nice video again peter i like what u have to say.

    Good luck

    Tom

  • Thank you, Peter. I loved this! I share your love of the Blues.

  • you can see E.T. in the background! lol

  • i sent you a message once and you replied not only with great respect but with quite a bit of haste as well. we appreciate your concern for our messages and comments just as much as you enjoy to get them. thanks for another great video Peter! :)

  • great discussion on the English language. Interesting choice of song at the end. good "chill" music.

  • Thanks, I've really enjoyed your stories. When you said "seven minutes gone already" I couldn't believe it.

    Bye from Boston, Massachusetts!

  • awesome. big love x

  • your videos are very nice keep up the grate work.

  • don't be a nitwit, little boy.

  • I pray England never looses their English way of speaking. It's the most beautiful way. I an Acadian french Canadian, and my english is not very good. But I've always adored England's english.

  • wow, goes to show I should ignore stereo-types, I was always told French-Canadians hated us Brits. I've learned something today :-)

  • Maybe the french Canadians Quebecers - they are known to not like any kind of english, lol. That is our stereo-type of them. I am in New Brunswick, very different kind of french than the Quebecers. I'm an Acadian, different from Quebecers. And here everyone I know seems to love the English. :-)

  • Of course Her Majesty's speech has been influenced by tv and age. she doesn't retain the clipped speech that she began her reign.

  • Free grandpa :D

    *hug*

  • Hello Peter

I think the film you refer to which made the name of Jane Pussell as a sex symbol was the film 'The Outlaw' - very daring at the time. Every girl wanted to be Jane Russell. She was also very good in 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes'.

    Jaci

  • Very interesting video blog. Never even thought about things like that before

  • Wow, he took his response to ReNUTto down. Hmmmmm.

  • He said what he needed to say, no need to fan the flames. He's said his peace

  • great video. i love your video's. keep up the good work. one very small question. you were talking aobut how some of the english boys and girls are tal;kign now with the hip hop or american accents... we as americans can hear the english accent. but do we have an accent to you?

  • Yes...you do have accents. the particular ones that I can place geographically are: the original 13 states, texan and south western. of course you will never be able to do so listening to Hollywood/TV speech elocution and voice coaching will destroy specific accents.

  • hey there peter that film was Duel In The Sun with Jane Russell amd Gregory Peck , lust in the dust indeed!

  • It is great to have elders give us a glimpse into the past. Thanks for sharing your memories and thoughts.

  • lol IslandHermit...

Thanks for the video G, rap with ya later :)

  • why does he remind me of the old guy from family guy?... lol anyones else

  • I liked the song, and nice video!

  • I find it amusing that while the Chinese and Polish and others are trying to master a proper British accent, young Brits are trying to master a proper American accent.

It reminds me of the naming of side-bacon. In the US they call it "Canadian bacon" while we here in Canada call it "English bacon". I wonder who the English blame it on? :-)

  • lol. I was in Canada last year (great country by the way) and your "English bacon" tastes much better than the stuff we have in England.

  • When I younger I would use American terminology; but it doesn't last, now I'm older I prefer to speak english, and so we should.

  • he scares me

  • good point about appreciating what you have and not going out and wanting more and more all the time---paraphrasing ;) take care~!

  • Really mature comment from "bignomad".

Says he is 34 but cant be true.. if he really is the age he says im worried for him.

But anyway i've watched all of your videos and I like to say you are doing good work.. thank you for really interesting videos!

  • I have a (sort of) friend on Stickam named Metalhead, who has (to me) a very thick English accent that is definitely not the Queen's. In fact it approaches Cockney in its density, and it's difficult for my Californian ears to pick apart. Has anyne else had difficulties with the ways others speak?

  • Thanks for the new video. Great blues music!

  • Are you one of those old repressed english cracker faggots? I sense that u may be one of those little sensative ass fuckers. You know those boring british racist fucking droney voiced idiots that think that their idiotic thoughts gain revelence if spoken in the KING's english. Hey near death faggot fuck. We don't don't give a fuck about your king. In fact niether does your own uptight little boy buggering country.

  • Judging by your childish spelling mistakes, I think you would benefit from a few English lessons.

  • You are a sick little piece of garbage.

  • Which King? There has been no British king since 1952. You are behind the times, boyo - or maybe it girlie? Education is a wonderful thing. Why don't you try it? Love and kisses xxxx

  • Ehhh, he's not even speaking in the King's English, or Queen's as it would be put nowadays. Its an accent, as posh as one can attain.

  • I dont even know where to begin with how wrong that comment is. There hasn't been a King of England for over 50 years. Its like me trying to insult an american person by telling them I hate their president Eisenhower. I cant believe the ignorance of some people

  • It's actually completely different, but how and ever....

  • The comment wasnt directed at you Aldev, it was meant for bignomad. Sorry for the confusion, I thought you might think that just after I posted. I agree with your comment about it being an accent.

  • what an idiot - how on earth could your be so rude. If you don't like the video then don't watch it.

  • perhaps he left for school at nine.... u never know :P

  • Mississippi John Hurt is one of my FAVORITE blues men!! Yes, I'm old enough that I got to see him back in the early 60s (we were very much into the blues and folk genre at the time) in Los Angeles at a small club. "Lay Me a Pallet on your Floor" is one of my fave songs. I was also lucky enough to see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee around the same time.

another excellent video Sir!!! Thanks again!

  • (Posting this here since Argent009 likes to ban people who speak the truth from commenting on his videos)

Argent009, before you go and accuse others of this, that and the other thing:

    1. Stop smoking

    2. Do some exercise and lose some weight

    3. Get off your ass and get a job.

    4. Pay off your debts from the money you make with #3.

    5. Stop panhandling money from old men.

I think you should be ashamed of yourself. . .

  • ? what in the world are u talking about?

  • DN64, Who do you think you are exactly? Argent has the right to tell the truth, but that doesn't give you the right to JUDGE you fool. People like you just have no lives of their own. You remind me of my mother-in-law you self centered idiot.

  • awilliams100, who do think YOU are? Trying to tell me I don't have a right to an opinion based on what I see and hear? Fuck you. I have the right to an opinion as much as Argent009 does. I have right the to judge him as much as he has the right to judge renetto -- even if I don't agree with some of the things he says about him. My life is fantastic (thanks for bringing it up) -- it couldn't be better. Sorry to hear that your mother-in-law gets you all pissy (like you are now).

  • DN64 - Put a sock in it!

  • Jaci75, eat my shorts.

  • Panhandling....Ill try and address your comment in your own style.

    1. Get off your ass and find a dictionary.

    2. Numbering your points is extremely juvenile.

    3. What bearing does his smoking, eating or employment habits upon his opinions?

    Kisses

  • 1. Panhandling is a word -- YOU are the one that needs a dictionary, pal.

    2. I am catering to you seeing as you are a juvenile.

    3. I never said that -- try again.

  • I never said that it wasnt a word, you are just using it incorrectly, "pal". Again with the numbering, get over yourself - you're not important enough for your opinions to require reference points. And no, you didn't say that exactly - however, the fact that you brought up those points along with your arguement suggests that you equate them. If you cannot understand that, Ill phrase it differently - you believe that the fact that he smokes impacts upon his opinion.

  • If you don't understand the reference behind me using the term "panhandling" then so be it -- it's not that complex.

You are a juvenile, I numbered my points to make it easier for you to grasp my points, yet that still didn't seem to work.

"you believe that the fact that he smokes impacts upon his opinion." <- How many fucking times do I have to say NO, NOT AT ALL. Re-read what I've said twice now -- how "thickheaded" can you be?!

  • as usual a nice story to start the day , thank you peter and take care of yourself (:

  • Thanks again Peter. Although for some bizarre reason I'm still not getting your comment under my video. How odd but I thank you for the trouble you went to in posting me one. Glad you enjoyed the video. Would you like to star in the next one god sir? ha ha! Go on.

  • Correction for my last post: Good* not god.

  • Jane Russel showed a bit of cleavage in the 40's in the Outlaw, The young Widow (renamed in the US as The Naughty Widow) :o and Paleface, then into the 50's with His kind of Woman. Not sure which one you fancied. I find myself denouncing this American way in favor of other Countries across the pond ;) Especially since the year 2000!

  • I love Ed McBain! Nice to know we have that bit in common. I so enjoy your videos. Take care, Sir.

  • good video, I'm from HK, lived in Australia, but still prefer the good old British sayings.

  • Wonderful story Peter. If your into blues, you might want to give a listen to Taj Mahal if you haven't heard him yet.

  • It's clear, my friend, that the lyric in this tune which doesn't apply to you is "nobody cares for me."

  • Can you get me an autograph from the Bucket woman?

  • So happy you left your renetto-comment and found back to your telling stories and tales. Love

  • Actors refer to it as "RP" which stands for "Received Pronunciation".

  • Where is the video geriatric 1927 post a day or so ago calling out Renetto for calling him a YouTube Traitor?

I can't find it now. Was it taken down? By whom?It Geriatric lambasted Renetto saying he didn't need permission to post at LiveVideo if that's what he wanted to do. Why did geriatric1927 take it down?

Or does anyone know how to find it?

  • You Are 100% Cool.

  • I find most Europeans and especially Brits extremely arrogant and hateful toward Americans.

  • Political reasons aside, I suspect that's more to do with how rude Americans seem based on their speech. E.g., in a shop: "I'll take this" or "Give me%2qa3MLAAAAUks5Q0xkYWQ2dmNzCwAAAFFvOUJqanlHTS1V

    Pragma: no-cache

    Cache-Control: no-cache

    client-ip: 71.80.234.199

  • what?

  • nice picking...he's got a good voice, too.

  • Am an Amrcn who lived in Engld for 4 yrs in mid&late '90s, in my teens. Back then, though obviously some previously Amrcn vocab had been adopted, it seemed all the Brtsh kids spoke with their own local accents, or at least some kind of obviously Brtsh accent. Nowadays, I find Brtsh, Irish, and N'Z'land teens on YT whose ACCENTS (not just vocab) sound very Amrcn-influenced. Much harder to place them w/out checking profiles. Fascinating effect of cheap/free 2-way voice communication.

  • WTF, why are you saying are you that lazy that you can't spell out "England" and "Americans"?

  • WTF, are you that lazy that you can't spell out "England" and "Americans"?(edited)

  • Probably had to squeeze 'em in order to fit YouTube's maximum character limit. The opposite of lazy -- actually had to spend some time to figure out where characters could be omitted without losing clarity.

  • Exactly. :) 500-character limit. Compared to a few (or even more than a few) thousands at many other websites. Another aspect YT should change: the link you click to get to someone's reply doesn't necessarily take you to the actual page of comments where your message is, AND, once you find your comment, the replies may then be on the NEXT page.

  • Always love your stories !! NEW YORK , USA

  • great job

  • Thank you Sir. I could listen to your stories all day.

    Bob..in Tennessee USA

  • Lovely chat, Peter! I love the thoughts around languages, being multilingual myself.

The music is cool. I like how you introduce us to these musicians we would never have heard of otherwise!

Went to see your angry vid again - I was just so impressed by it - and NOBODY has given R what for as well as you did! But it is gone :-( I understand, but I will miss it!

  • i love your videos peter, but when you said brave new world i could only think of iron maiden.

  • your music is great and your observations are well appreciated.

  • My friend went to Singapore and they talk in queens english it was fascinating to think that not only English but queen's language so there are different English

  • Good music peter, but would have liked to have heard it all. I travel in Europe, and love various accents of english, but am fear struck that my southern accent sounds so uncouth.

  • Jane Russell's screen debut was "The Outlaw"--cleavage galor! Directed by Howard Hughes. It was a western telling the tale of Billy the Kid and "the sexy dame who loves him." Walter Huston plays Doc Holliday. I'm pretty sure that in reality Bily the Kid and Doc Holliday never met.

  • i always love the music you pick...

  • yea peter!

  • I must correct you. Jane Russell had more than just a "little amount of cleavage".

  • Peter, I enjoyed your talk about the 'Queen's' English and the other national variations to it. Before YouTube, I was never exposed to many different accents. To my American ears, the accents of the UK just sounds more sophisticated. Alistair Cooke could read the ingredients of a box of cereal, and I would be enthralled.

  • Thanks for watching Peter. I do enjoy that grandma character indeed. Sadly matey I didn't get your comment? I think my comments aren't working right. Ah that's a terrible shame. Thanks anyway, it's very much appreciated.

  • Just repeating what i already said in a mail to you: you're inspiring and i send you the best wishes to you from Mexico. It's just awesome the fact you're doing videos and sharing your life with us.

  • its interesting to note how the queens english is being used here in typical soap operas here in america

  • i liked this video..Plus I really liked the music at the end. It was great.:]

  • I swear he says "OH YEAH!" at one point in the video...but I couldn't find it again. O well.

  • no its yeah man

  • Thanks for clarifying that :D. Although, I Can't find it again.

  • In Wales (For Americans: Also part of Britain but not part of England) no one uses American-English that much. (At least not in my part) I blame it on the overload of American kids TV which is quite frankly crap and generic. No offence to Americans :P.

  • Well you obviously don't know anything about child tv programming in the US. In fact, I believe that something like 75% of all child aimed programming must be educational.

  • Maybe on PBS, but the childrens programs on cable t.v. are horrendous and are nothing more than marketing tools to buy crap associated with the characters. When it comes to programming for teens, take a look at the load of crap of MTV.

  • Not the Pope, just Peter The Great

  • Turtle Dove! Awesome Peter! ;)

E.T. is cool too. LOL try his accent! Smiles :)

    Keep it coming.

    Hans

  • he has a point

  • Oh my, Peter, you've outdone yourself on this one! I love how it came full circle! You're the best. Greetings from Texas.

  • nice song!

  • I really enjoy ure videos!

Every day before i go to bed i watch one of ure videos =)

But i can agree with you.Every time I was in England i noticed that most of the yound people try to speak with an american accent. But i like the britisch accent more ;)

  • I don't believe the pope owns an ET figure ^^

    Phail'd :P

  • Truly enjoy watching your videos Peter. If you'd be interested in seeing my homage to 'old folk' and how we must embrace the brilliant of the older generation then pop along and see my videos. They are a comical parody that I hope you'll enjoy.

Hope you'll reply. And all the very best with everything, you are an inspiration to us all.

  • I may be in the minority, but I don't think you should have removed the response to Renetto. You were right, you HAD the right to be angry, and any semblance of an apology he's given was half-hearted and buried in bluster.

  • Wiley: I agree with what Peter said in his response, and I agree with what you're saying here, but what that guy wanted was attention, and he did not deserve to be given any, especially from someone respectable like Peter.

  • we have AMericans that try and speak with british accents.

  • love you. Love You. LOVE YOU! Peter.

  • Your so funny peter, great vid

  • Just shortly: nice video again, Peter!

  • Thanks for the fine tune Peter. I love that ET doll of yours.

  • Great video

  • AS far as the video/s locking up, let the video load fully before playing. does the trick

  • Peter...you are a gem! Thanks for the nice chat.

  • Two of my favorite authors are Val McDermid and Ian Rankin. I think I have read just about everything they have written. McDermid's protagonist Tony Hill is one of my favorite characters.

  • Did u fight at the somme aswell?

  • u dont no why so many people watch this dude sorry to say but this is just so boring no desrspect to peter but idk just boring

  • The Outlaw! woohoo Jane Russell

  • Yeah man! :)

That's such a pretty song. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. They're almost therapeutic...so peaceful and thoughtful. Anyhow, carry on and keep up the good work! :)

    ~rebelduck

  • Interesting video, Peter. Thanks. You have a new subscriber :-)

  • Peter, another articulate and engaging video, you're a very interesting and enlightened gentleman. I wish I'd subscribed long ago. Don't leave it too long til the next one.
