The song is about those people who amazingly turn out to be quite healthy and confident (and only "little" weird) althoug they had to go through a lot of crap. It's a comforting song that reminds people that their life is not necessarily going to be crap only because the life of their parents was or is, that you can make it, when you find at least "something" that was good in your past - and focus on that.
