how long did I take for you to learn the harp? I'm thinking about starting myself and, although I'm not afraid of hard work, I would like to get a feel for how difficult/easy it is

Hey there - it depends. In this video, I had been playing for about two years, I think. It generally helps to have music background (to be able to read music) and piano helps (two hands doing different things). I think the harp is considered to be relatively difficult, with a kind of steep early learning curve. Once you learn the basics, though, it gets easier.

thank you. I was also wondering how you would go about getting acess to the instrument. Are there many places that will allow you to rent one and ,preferably, use it on the premisis? My parents were concerned about the size and cost and did not want to buy until I had been playing long enough to be considered "committed"

In my area, we have a community music school that has harps for the students to play if they take lessons. Places that sell harps often have them to rent as well. You also don't have to start with with a pedal harp which are the big, expensive ones. My very first harp was about $300, although I upgraded pretty quickly.

Don't be intimidated by it. In the end, it's not about competing with others. It's just about the enjoyment of learning and creating music you like, and your own improvement. You can be as good as you want to be.
