It was actually written in 1918, just after WWI, by Gene Lockhart and composed by Ernest Seitz (apparently he came up with the refrain when he was 12), and it was then covered by over 100 artists, notably Les Paul and Carl Perkins in his 1985 rockabilly special. While CP covered it, he did not write it.
