Hammer, we couldn't run those races back then, or now without a large group of great volunteers. All the drivers really did appreciate your helping out with the event. I want to thank you for all of us. Fortunately I never had to get towed at Lake Afton. But I did have my share of tow ins at other tracks.
Those were great day and fabulous racing. I'd like to see Lake Afton and Ponca City back on the schedule.
I worked flat tow for just about 5 years running. I though this was the GT Money race sponsored by Whitlock Automotive. The guy I hung with we would whoop and holler every time you racers came by. We would bet each other on who was going to win. We would pick favorites, It was so awesome, you racers were so awesome and amazing. Thank you so very much for the incredible memories for those hot summer days.
This is the August 14, 1983 Lake Afton Grand Prix SCCA National race. I was driving the white #97 289 Cobra & won the Sunday afternoon race. It was a great public road track with a very long front straight followed by a tight hairpin with a giant tree on the outside of the turn. It was the hottest weekend at a racetrack I can ever remember .......... over 100 degrees every day!
Is there any chance that you have any film of this race and a copy of the race results? My friend Mike recently bought the orange #39 1970 Mustang that is in this race with you. He is trying to accumulate anything that may help in the restoration of this car back to a track worthy condition. Please let me know.
Hi, I own the #39 Mustang in the video. I looked through the logbooks and I believe this race was on 8-13-83. Is it possible you have more video of this race or others that may possibly have my car in them.
Mike, this is all the video I have of that race. My brother was filming it for me. I have some video of my E Production race but haven't put it up on Youtube yet. You had a great car it looks like from the film. Wasn't Lake Afton a hoot?
I wasn't sure the year this was but now that you mention it, I saw Morris Clement's Datsun in the film. He won the Runnoffs in it and I got to cut out the rear suspension on it after that when I worked for Timmon's Chassis in Wichita.
I can't remember what year this was, but somewhere in the early 80's if I remember correctly. The only car I recognize is Morris Clement's Datsun Z. I cut the rear end out of it after he won the National Championship in 84. I worked for Timmons Racing at that time in Wichita.
I raced at Afton for quite a few year in my Triumph. We really appreciated the efforts of the workers and volunteers who spent all their time getting the track ready and working the race. Thanks so much.
What is up with the oil barrels? Glad they gave up on THAT safety idea......Anyone know more about this video or when the last time a SCCA race was run at Afton?
The barrels were filled with water and were to keep us from hitting the trees fullforce. They did a great job keeping the drivers and cornerworkers safe.
They have them on almost every bridge on interstate systems, but they are yellow plastic. Some are filled with water, but I think most are filled with sand these days.
The last time I ran Lake Afton was 1986 my video was 1980. I think they ran up until the early 90's. They may still run go karts there.

Boy, this brings back memories. The Lake Afton GP was an annual event for me and my dad. I can smell the spilled beer and castor oil now...

That's pretty neat. Did you see him in the video? If so, which car was he driving? I may know him from way back when.
