This was my fathers favorite song. Aways told me to pay special attention to the way Indiana state troopers handled the situation at the conclusion of this song. Gun shots. Indiana justice for sure. Law dogs.

Apparently he was the only White guy to be taken on by Tamla Mowtown. Maybe that was because of the arrangement of the song in a 'soul' style? I play a rock version of it and it's maybe as RD would have originally written it,I don't know. It is a great, emotional song and maybe an orchestra could do a good job as well! Thanks for letting me hear this again! Mick S.
@jockhamish Motown wanted to get into the rock market and this fit the bill. Ive just read it on wiki otherwise I just thought it was great catchy song - the sirens are great and its inspired by Bonnie and Clyde.
70s one hit wonder? Not in the UK where soul fans fell hook, line and sinker for R Dean Taylor in the early 1970s. Blue eyed soul on Tamla Motown, what a time to be alive.

A little on the cheesy side...but geez...imagine this...a song with lyrics you can actually hear and understand. A great little story that brings back cherished memories of a better day.
What a horrible state, but the song sounds great. It's the state that started the KKK, it's home to Gary, only worse than Detroit. I really feel for those people.
I remember this song & Mark Lindsay's Arizona as the big songs on the radio when i first walked into my grade 5 classroom in Lambeth, Ontario circa 1970. Thanx for helping me relive the memories!!!!!

@rebeldiamondgirl ~ The first one I bought was Time by the Chambers Brothers. And I got slapped around by my older brothers for listening to "nigger music". What ignorant bastards they were/are. I still love that song. Revolutionary!
I'd take a bet on the fact that I am probably the only woman in South Africa - Durban - singing Indiana Wants Me, loudly... in our blasted traffic. it calms me down, as does Gene Pitney...
For a long time, I thought this song was done by Cat Stevens. His voice KIND OF sounds like Cat's voice, and the rhythm of the line "I wish I had you...to talk to" really reminds me of Cat Stevens' style.
This song is about a guy who can't go back to Indy because he killed a man for saying something to his woman that he didn't like. That's messed up, but catchy chorus and nice harmonies. :)
I have alaways felt this song had a connection with the old hit TV series "The Fugitive" starring David Jansen, as both guys were in trouble and both from Indiana, ect. Thanks for posting this great song!
When this was popular a girl i went to school with had the 45 copy of this. she had a battery powered record player and would play the opening siren on the school bus 84 and the driver would look in the mirror to see the police car that wasnt there
@timwmartin hey pal thats my homeland your talking about. and if you actually payed attention to the song he wants to go back to indiana but can't because of legal problems. some people enjoy country living. so piss off.
You know, this could have been the theme from the 1960s TV show "The Fugitive" because Dr. Richard Kimble lived in Stafford, Indiana and that is where he was falsely accused of murdering his wife. I can imagine the lyrics, "Red lights are flashing around me. Looks like Gerard has found me"!

@purebredindian01 He killed a man because a man insulted his wife, so the state of Indiana wants him for murder. Since he killed a man, he can't go back to the life he had with the woman he loved.
its in some versions and in others its been cut out but at the very end you can hear them open fire on him at the very end listen close youll hear it unless your listening to one thats been cut
wonderful song , wonderful memories i loved living through the seventies, every song I hear from that era takes me back in time to a great place in my life, thanks to all the people i met, the artists that sang such great songs wonderful times, how i wish I could go back to them
oh this brings back so many fantastic memories, all the 70s were my playground and i enjoyed every minute and every song of the 70s I hear takes ne sraight back to a wonderful place in time thanks to all the people i met then wherever you may be great memories.
@tradercris LOL - good one! This song is still really cool & very underrated.
Why did they shoot him at the end instead of just arresting him & throwing him into the living hell of prison? There's another song by Whyte Boots called "Nightmare" that had the singer crying & screaming at the end while she was being arrested. Now THAT'S what I find scary.
Well, to each their own song & arrangement ... this one's still powerful by itself.
This was my fathers favorite song. Aways told me to pay special attention to the way Indiana state troopers handled the situation at the conclusion of this song. Gun shots. Indiana justice for sure. Law dogs.

In the '50's, audiences wanted to be entertained by the DJ's and the music.
In the '60's, audiences wanted to be entertained by the DJ's talking about the music & the music.
In the '70's, audiences wanted the DJ's to shut-up because the music was more entertaining.
In the '80's, music was different, but still appealed to audiences.Groups faded to individuals.
In the '90's, music became a meaningless connection w/the audience.

He did a song on Motown sometime in the late 60s called "There's a Ghost In My House".
In spring 1974 it was "rediscovered" in the UK and became a Top 3 hit here.
To the 70s youth culture known as "Northern Soul" it is an anthem.
See the number of views for that song just on YouTube alone - 99% of them from the UK
