  • This was my fathers favorite song. Aways told me to pay special attention to the way Indiana state troopers handled the situation at the conclusion of this song. Gun shots. Indiana justice for sure. Law dogs.

  • Let it all hang out whatever is available, now and always!!

  • listening to this in 2012

  • Reason DAVID LETTERMAN stays in NYC

  • just played the utube of this, it is blaring out on a hot night in Durban, South Africa. it fits in well with all the usual cop sirens we hear here every night... Had to repel a man trying to crawl through one of my windows on Saturday night, that was a night to remember. Wish I had a taser...

  • RobFrost..." I love this song unlike songs nowadays they all have no meaning

  • +++ Congratulations New York Giants, Eli Manning. 2012 Superbowl Champions (46). Great SONG. Nice work Tom Coughlin.

  • is R Dean Taylor still alive and if so can any mail get to him.

  • The sound.

  • country artist T.G. shepard recorded a country album on the motown lable, and he's white, in case you didn't know.

  • i've lived in Indiana all my life, not so great.

  • O-u got guilty repubuglies there in organized crime-I fee for ya, and pray for ya......

  • Easily in my top 10 favourite songs of all time! Has been for years. Brilliant track.

  • My old boss and her girlfriend:

    "Indiana wants me."

    "You should go back there."

    "I can't."

  • This is Andrew Luck's song, particularly if he demands a trade.

  • I don't think its true that Taylor was the only white guy on Motown but even if so, they chose well.

  • @clearflower Rare Earth was on Motown...white band

  • very underesimated singer

  • Apparently he was the only White guy to be taken on by Tamla Mowtown. Maybe that was because of the arrangement of the song in a 'soul' style? I play a rock version of it and it's maybe as RD would have originally written it,I don't know. It is a great, emotional song and maybe an orchestra could do a good job as well! Thanks for letting me hear this again! Mick S.

  • @jockhamish Motown wanted to get into the rock market and this fit the bill. Ive just read it on wiki otherwise I just thought it was great catchy song - the sirens are great and its inspired by Bonnie and Clyde.

  • @jockhamish WROOOONG ! Have you ever heard of RARE EARTH ? This was a MOTOWN group which was a WHITE band, they was out from `69 to `72 !

  • it's funny cause my name is Indiana, and me and a guy called Dean have a thing :L

  • Ah the memories.

  • too true what a great time to be in, so many great songs rang out in the disco,s,so many places to go to enjoy the motown sound.

  • too true what a great time to be in, so many great song rang out in the disco,s,so many places to go

  • 70s one hit wonder? Not in the UK where soul fans fell hook, line and sinker for R Dean Taylor in the early 1970s. Blue eyed soul on Tamla Motown, what a time to be alive.

  • LOVE THE SONG I HAVE HAD THE 45 SINCE THE 1970S 70S SONGS ARE VERY SPECIAL. SOME PEOPLE SAY I LIVE IN THE PAST, I DONT CARE WHAT ANYBODY SAYS

  • Thanks for this great quiet classic-and dont forget his other one -I gotta see jane

  • I fucking LOVE this song!

  • I friggin LOVE this song!

  • sounds like the budget for the police force went down...they cant afford sirens and now they have to use kazoos instead

  • What's the point in shooting a Jew to talk to,maybe he brought it down with a leg shot.

  • @1952YOU1320TUBE1952 The line is actually "I wish I had you, to talk to."

  • @bheffley2002

OK Homer Duh you got me.

Tis was a play on word's

  • dont drive dont breathe dont do anything do not even exist i was a child when i first heard this but me now the world has turned enough.do nothing everyone.

  • I think this song has the distinction of being the first to use a siren in the soundtrack.

  • I have heard this song a few times in my life...and I am from Indiana!! great song!!

  • are you kidding me, one of the best songs ever!

  • I have not head this song for so many years. I thank you having it here so every can enjoy it. thank you.

  • A little on the cheesy side...but geez...imagine this...a song with lyrics you can actually hear and understand. A great little story that brings back cherished memories of a better day.

  • What a horrible state, but the song sounds great. It's the state that started the KKK, it's home to Gary, only worse than Detroit. I really feel for those people.

  • Why is it on a One-Hit Wonder compilation? Has anyone never heard Gotta See Jane or Ghost in my House?

  • @gsd7755 "Indiana Wants Me" was R. Dean Taylor's only Top 40 hit in the U.S.

  • @gsd7755 Good day

I suspect because only Arizona made U.S charts, & the others were only hits here at home...

  • I like this song alot, Thank you for sharing.

  • Bad Finger was not a one hit wonder.

  • Bad Finger was not a one hit wonder

  • I remember this song & Mark Lindsay's Arizona as the big songs on the radio when i first walked into my grade 5 classroom in Lambeth, Ontario circa 1970. Thanx for helping me relive the memories!!!!!

  • I remember when this first came out, my friend heard the sirens and thought cop cars were outside!

But oh, hearing this brings me back.

  • they cut him down in the end

  • These songs of this era had such great hooks, and now to hear them again

brings you right back to that early age when you first heard them. Great days of AM Radio!!! Thanks for the post!!

  • Thanks. Long time since I even thought aout that tune, much less heard it. Thanks again

  • brings back family car rides, sitting in the back seat with my brothers, i was 7 and i never forgot this song....same with alot of the great 70's music!!

  • He cowrote the #1 hit "Love Child" for the Supremes, and their #10 hit "I'm Livin' in Shame." Story songs seemed to be his forte.

  • Pure Soul.

  • @bheffley2002- The guy killed the fuckin' governor, ferchrissakes... He's gonna "ride the lightning" fer sure!!!

  • Sounds like Dr. Richard Kimble.

  • The boy wants to go back home. It's like that with most Hoosiers.

  • Great song me hearties. Long long time since heard . Thanks for posting. From the old Aussie.

  • This is the first "45" I ever bought! Ooooh the memories!

  • @rebeldiamondgirl ~ The first one I bought was Time by the Chambers Brothers. And I got slapped around by my older brothers for listening to "nigger music". What ignorant bastards they were/are. I still love that song. Revolutionary!

  • a great one hit wonder.....always loved it....thanks for posting

  • This is the less familiar version where the guy is shot by the police.

  • parodied brilliantly at the end of zappas joe's garage. remember this song from my early teens this and american pie.

  • I have gone to wedding receptions were they never heard of this! This was my favorite forty some yrs ago

  • Everytime i see a Indiana tag on a car while driving on the road i sing " Indiana wants me"..it drives my wife crazy..lol

  • @captvoltst

I'd take a bet on the fact that I am probably the only woman in South Africa - Durban - singing Indiana Wants Me, loudly... in our blasted traffic. it calms me down, as does Gene Pitney...

  • @SuperSallyscott Good One! Sing it out!

  • @captvoltst It gets in my head and the chorus runs ina loop!

  • @UTAHbilly He actually had a couple of big singles - Gotta See Jane and Taos New Mexico, for example. But this was definitely his biggest hit.

  • Best one hit wonder EVER. - Bill

  • Comment removed

  • @UTAHbilly

He did a song on Motown sometime in the late 60s called "There's a Ghost In My House".

In spring 1974 it was "rediscovered" in the UK and became a Top 3 hit here.

To the 70s youth culture known as "Northern Soul" it is an anthem.

See the number of views for that song just on YouTube alone - 99% of them from the UK

  • I understand the cops want him but all I imagine is a Fire Engine... The wail is different. Crank it up ... Responding Code 3

  • The horn reminds me of the Ghostbusters car. Badass.

  • He doesn't mess about if someone insults his girl - you have to give him that :-)

  • For a long time, I thought this song was done by Cat Stevens. His voice KIND OF sounds like Cat's voice, and the rhythm of the line "I wish I had you...to talk to" really reminds me of Cat Stevens' style.

  • Keep The Torch..etc, Wigan 1973xxxxxxxxxx

  • YES.

  • As a recording artist, this may have been his only US hit, but as a songwriter he had quite a few hits at Hitsville U.S.A.!

  • The dude deserved a round.

  • Absolutely amazing the power in a simple chord progression......

  • These are some pretty hard-hitting lyrics, I never really paid attention until I heard it earlier today.

Of course, not too surprising considering this came out around the same time as Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe"

  • R Dean Taylor isnt a one hit wander he alsos had a hit called gotta see jane get your facts right before you comment

  • i like the megaphone insert

  • This song is about a guy who can't go back to Indy because he killed a man for saying something to his woman that he didn't like. That's messed up, but catchy chorus and nice harmonies. :)

  • how can you not like this song? guess those who dont are wanted by indiana and should be turned in lol

  • @1981shaunie No, those who don't, like....'gulp', do I dare say it....rap??? Man, does that stuff suck!!

  • I have alaways felt this song had a connection with the old hit TV series "The Fugitive" starring David Jansen, as both guys were in trouble and both from Indiana, ect. Thanks for posting this great song!

  • This is such a great song...thanks for positing it.

  • Kinda sounds like Lobo

  • All he did was say something and you killed him. Enjoy your stay.

  • WHY CAN'T I FIND THIS EXACT ORIGINAL ON iTUNES???

  • I always thought this song was by Garmon and Arsefunkel...apparently I was wrong.

  • @ElJeficitoTheSequal Does sound a lot like them.

  • stupid song lol the end is a riot

  • Justin Bieber slapped this dude in the face and he didn't do shit.

  • @shatchett0 F*ck Bieber and Hip Hop flops and rap crap!

  • Never heard this song before, but it's been a running gag in MST3K episodes--good song.

  • ooooooh!!! SO glad I found this! used to be about no 2 or 3 by us. Used to sit and cry over it when I was a dreamy 15 year old!!!

  • love this track , was on a 70s compilation album that i owned :)

  • Is this the song that Harison Ford sings when the ask him to make another movie about the archelogist ?

  • for ages he was the only white guy on Motown !

  • The only Canadian artist on Motown

  • I was 7 when this song was released, great memories!!

  • YES! Have not heard this in SO long, used to listen to it repetitively on my 78 player! Great song!

  • When this was popular a girl i went to school with had the 45 copy of this. she had a battery powered record player and would play the opening siren on the school bus 84 and the driver would look in the mirror to see the police car that wasnt there

  • me mum had a best of r dean taylor when i was a kid ,i nicked it when i left home .seriously underrated artist

  • first white man to sign for motown

  • Nobody wants to go back to Indiana once they've been there, so I sympathize with R Dean Taylor. Is this the official anthem of Indiana? It should be.

  • Comment removed

  • @timwmartin Thats funny yets hundreds of thousands come for the Brickyard and the Indy 500.

  • R Dean Taylor was not a one hit wonder research him u will see he had other hit called Gotta See Jane and Love Child

  • @maltesemario theres a ghost in my house too

  • wow 35yrs since i last heard this the 45 wore out in late 70's can't believe i'm hearing this song again thank GOD for the internet

  • Very Cool Song from the Good Ol Days.

  • I've loved this song since I was young; and it still gets me.... i love it..

  • DJ introducing this song on the radio: "If you're listening in the car right now.....take a look in your rearview mirror!"

  • Adieu, Doctor Jones.

  • Always a favorite of mine and an icon of the year 1970, as well as a symbol of the social climate of that time. Timeless and enduring!

  • Thanks for the beatiful memories! A hippy still

  • LOL wanted

  • This is and always has been dreadful. Ghost in my House was the big one.

  • I played this song over and over again until I couldn't play it anymore, now if only I had an IPOD. Thanks for posting ! : )

  • I love this song, have since I was a child. I hope you don't mind, I used your video of it on my guitar cover. Thanks a million!

  • You know, this could have been the theme from the 1960s TV show "The Fugitive" because Dr. Richard Kimble lived in Stafford, Indiana and that is where he was falsely accused of murdering his wife. I can imagine the lyrics, "Red lights are flashing around me. Looks like Gerard has found me"!

  • @TheRetro64 David Janssen.

  • LOVE this song...Thanks for posting it here. We have this and many many other Great tunes at TOMA'S TIMELESS TUNES, i hope you stop by and subscribe. I did subscribe to your channel. Thanks again. Tommy Toma.

  • Is this the theme song for the run away Democrat "Flee Party"? LOL

  • @aschel1977

It fits right in with "Won't You Come Home, Pat Bauer?", doesn't it?

  • Is this the theme song for the run away Democrat "Flee Party"? LOL

  • not entirely pc nowadays but was first white singer to sign for mowtown records super song

  • This was the first Top 10 hit by a white artist on Motown Records, of which Rare Earth records was a subsidiary of.

  • I like the music but... I think the cops wanted to arrest him for the lyrics of this song. :o)

  • @bballman see your point bb..maybe you should hum along to instrumentals and leave the lyric section to us who understand the meanings of such lyrics which this page seems to be full off....thanks for the posting anippygirl, this is a soul searching classic, thanks

  • Let's get the story straight ya see he killed this guy because he called his wife-a bitch& a whore!! No doubt id kill a mother fucker who called my wife the same thing and then Indiana would want me also!!

  • @Redblazer500 Just remember that a guilty verdict could mean the death penalty. Back in 1970, you could have been electrocuted or hanged.

  • This song reminds of my childhood in detroit back when things were normal and made sense.

  • This song is about a man who is wanted by the police in Indiana for killing another man. He can't go back to Indiana because he probably realizes that if he is convicted of this crime, he could go to the electric chair.

  • @bheffley2002 Thats what happened back in 1970. Today he'd probably get away with it.

  • I love this song. It reminds me of "hang down your head tom dooley", "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen and "I've gotta get a message to you" by the Bee Gees. They are all songs about someone in trouble with the law and a to a loved one. Great music.

  • @depressed321 The songs are all about murderers. The Bee Gees song "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" is about a man awaiting his execution.

  • GREAT!

  • Reminds me of when i was 7.

  • @needtolooselots In both cases, the title character is wanted for killing another person.

  • Indiana can have you!

  • THE JIG IS UP !!!...

  • cheese it its the copps!!

  • And DC too! Fuckin traffic! BULLSHIT!!!!!!!

  • Awesome! CO and VA want me! FUCK 'EM!

  • This was one of my favorite songs in HS.I still have the record.

  • UK hit in the spring of 71, great memories of listening to this upstairs in the Barnes after Youth Activities (five a side footy). Excellent pop song. Quirky effects, just like his "Gotta See Jane". Underrated artist.

  • Besides the band Rare Earth, I think Taylor may have had the only other hit in the US released on the Rare Earth label. This has always been one of my favorites, thanks for posting.

  • question, indiana, state or his woman?

  • @vcomp1960 please explain how it is both..

  • @purebredindian01 He killed a man because a man insulted his wife, so the state of Indiana wants him for murder. Since he killed a man, he can't go back to the life he had with the woman he loved.

  • @vcomp1960 thank you my girl was,is confused about it,thanks

  • i love indiana

  • Everyone, everywhere seems to love the 1970's !

-A Spectacularly Creative Era ! -Without even trying !

By 2010 AD -Everything seems so false & affected -

-Like Nobody seems to know where to go next ...

  • Great song takes me back when i was little my dad would listen to this so much gosh how i miss my child times....

  • its in some versions and in others its been cut out but at the very end you can hear them open fire on him at the very end listen close youll hear it unless your listening to one thats been cut

  • This is, perhaps, The Ultimate Outlaw-Getaway Song.

-It puts a lump in my throat every time I hear it.....

  • THIS IS THE POLICE..GIVE YOURSELF UP!!!

  • wonderful song , wonderful memories i loved living through the seventies, every song I hear from that era takes me back in time to a great place in my life, thanks to all the people i met, the artists that sang such great songs wonderful times, how i wish I could go back to them

  • oh this brings back so many fantastic memories, all the 70s were my playground and i enjoyed every minute and every song of the 70s I hear takes ne sraight back to a wonderful place in time thanks to all the people i met then wherever you may be great memories.

  • Dude shoulda hid out at Indian Lake, cops wouldnt hame looked for him there you know!

  • @tradercris LOL - good one! This song is still really cool & very underrated.

Why did they shoot him at the end instead of just arresting him & throwing him into the living hell of prison? There's another song by Whyte Boots called "Nightmare" that had the singer crying & screaming at the end while she was being arrested. Now THAT'S what I find scary.

Well, to each their own song & arrangement ... this one's still powerful by itself.
