Yul was the quintesential charismatic actor..dont care what anyone says about his personal, it was as mysterios and exotic as he was..I love me some him
One of my fave films For the person who asked about the Orthodox anthem at the beginning , it is for Easter/Pascha. The words are "Thy Resurrection, O Christ our Savior, the Angels in Heaven sing. Grant to us on the earth, to worship Thee with a Pure Heart". It is sung like in the movie during the threefold procession around the Church I LOVE Helen Hayes as the Dowager Empress. "the play is over! Go home!!!"
I love and dislike the ending. As much as the romantic in me wants to see Bounine and Anna together in an all too anticipated kiss scene. This ending was so well done, very cheeky and Dowager Empress was just so brilliant in her last words ;)
A scene of Bounine and Anna was certainly needed at the end. It was needed to confirm what Anna said previously in the movie, when she met the Queen for the first time, that love is what keeps one unchanged, to confirm that there wasn't any need now to prove who she was, because she had found love, with the general Bounine.
@bleedblueandpurple They based the animated film my Fox Animation Studios on this version :) they just made some very...extreme modifications to make it more entertaining for children.
i really wish they would have shown Sergei and Anna together at the end. I know that we are supposed to know that they left together and probably lived their own happily ever after, but still they could have at least just shown them walking together!! Anything!!
Anyway great movie!!! Yul Brynner has one of the most amazing voices ever!
She was Anastasia but she preferred freedom than a life of a princess. She would have to marry royalty but could never be happy cause she fell in love with the bald guy.She wanted freedom instead.Who woud give up a chance at the crown ,only a princess who knows having it is not all its cracked up to be.After all her family lost their lives for being royalty.Beautiful story.Epic

I've only seen the Disney version before, i loved this version so much better!! but i guess it was a good thing to see the Disney version first, now i understand that she left because she did not want that life, she wanted a life with Bounine :)
@rawr81itssarah Just to let you know. The animated Anastasia film was by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman and developed by Fox Animation Studios. ;) Not Disney.
@ice22marble its from the last bars of Slavonik march from Tschaikowsky- the composer wrote the imperial anthem in it But ist really a beautiful version indeed
@OLIVCHEN77 Thank you! I don't suppose you also know the name of the Russian Orthodox hymn at the beginning of the film, during the Russian Easter services in Paris. I love the melody. I wonder if it's for Easter or Good Friday, since it has a somber tone to it. Thanks again.
@ice22marble Hello, what you done to me! LOL...I heard around my CD-Collection...but I dont have this version. I own the DVD - and I think its a "fil" composing from Ken darby...this is also found in tne net.
But I think its from half tchaikowsky, half Kedrov....and a little traditional.
But maybe MGM knows more... But its a so wonderful movie
why did i expect to see them kiss and leave together in the end??? i just got my hopes up and they plummeted right now, great story and i love yule brynner so ill forgive the lack of embrace
@galexc13 I loved this movie. Yul Brynner and Ingrid Bergman were wonderful in it. I actually thought that the real Anastasia had lived. But through the DNA testing on the body you found out she didn't. I would have been great if one of them lived. Thanks for posting this movie. I loved it.
@tinasp3 I absolutely agree, it would have been the stuff of legends. Sadly, she didn't. This movie neither claims she is Anastasia, nor that she isn't. It's very neutral in that, and I think they did that on purpose (unlike the Disney version where it turns out to be Anastasia to make it a ''happy ending'' for the audience.) Still it's great. Tho I was hoping for a kiss the first time I watched it.
Abrupt, disappointing, and historically inaccurate. I liked a lot of the sets, but the whole film (Except for Helen Hays and Ingrid Bergman), to me, was kind of sleazy. And the last portion was a total departure from reality .
But thanks to Enchanted Nymph, for posting . I'd wanted to see the beginning.
great movie! By the way, the dress she wears in Don Bluth´s animated version resembles very much to this one. I like those coincidences ^_^

didn't 20th century fox make both movies? That would explain the similarities for instance anastasias dress...
