good thing this is a rodeo and not a charreada, cause her moves to much from place while spinning, and like somene said in reining you need reins, because you need the horse to stop "harder" and to go way lower while stopping almost to the point of it sitting dowm
Reining without reins?!O.O coool!! That's one well disciplined horse! I so wanna learn this. It looks so fun and practical since I'm living on a farm, and herding cows from the horse back is a lot easier than running side by side with them :P
@KatrinaDianeTV You're an idiot. she trains all of her horses. She trained a colt in (i believe) 2 hours, who was green at the start, and by the end of the time period was able to stand on his back.
@99painthorse actually that horse is can can lena, she might look like roxie but its not her i thought it was her at first but if you look and the mussle its brown so this horse is a very dark bay, it even says the horses name at the end
OMG you too looked brilliant!! Your an amazing rider and you have an amazing horse!! .... i also just realised you did all that without any reigns!! you have obviously worked hard on that horse and you deserved every clap you got out there!! FALBOUS RIDING
Now I wouldn't dare criticize nor question such a professional.....however, I do feel the need to ask why her horse was not collected. Her nose was very out. I'm honestly just wondering why that is allowed, if at all. Forgive me for my ignorance.
@noodle0912 Reining is not about collection or form. It is about the movement and the performance of the horse and rider working as one through simple leg cues. Reining is all about feeling/listening, sort of like cutting horses. They respond off of pressure and that is what the judges are looking for. How well the horse can perform with only leg pressure.
Normally, I watch dressage and other english style competitions. However reining was much more interesting that I ever would have imagined. I was even more amazed when I noticed the rider wasn't using any reins. Thanks for the excellent video! It has made me more interested in watching western riding! :)
love this clip!! i love the bond between horse and rider,, my mare and i are close but we definately not THAT close :D wish i could b just like her xx
ppl need to stop saying that the horse doesnt like this and that its cruel,,, well clearly the horse enjoys it coz he hasnt thrown her or anyhting and what is cruel about this clip exactly???????????????????????????????????
can't believe all the ignorant comments about spurs. They are a tool, an extension of the heel, so that it just takes a small touch to get the message across as what you want the horse to do. Especially with no reins, it is all those little subtle cues that are being communicated between the horse and rider. Try giving a subtle cue with your heel without spurs, especially if you have long legs like me. You can't give the horse a little touch without moving your whole leg.
Really good rider and horse... The horse is very greatly train to the point that the rider doesnt need the reins or bridle... This just shows that horse and rider are so connected that the rider only uses her body/legs/weight to slow, speed and back her horse. AMAZING!!!!!!!!! GREAT HORSEMENSHIP!!!!
@Palomino8487 ???? how iis it cruel its kinda like dressage but western and you run and spin but the main thing is they both have music and practice for hours
@AppaLoosa25 I am right there with you!!! Just got my first reiner after riding many other disciplines including dressage- And these horses LOVE their jobs- you can't force that- it is what they are bred to do!!!!!
No not at all. Reining is simply when you come out and a pattern pre-set by a judge. There will be flying lead changes, sliding stop ect. It has nothing to do with what headstall you use. They do have a new competition that they call bridleless reinng which is where you dont use a headstall at all kinda like what your thinking. Alot of times when they ride with the rope around the neck the are still training them to do bridleless, but still need that little extra amount of control.
its called Reining because it requires the horse to be responsive and in tune with its rider, whose aids should not be easily seen. which is often used with the reins but since Stacy and her horse are so connected she can do all these movements without the use of her reins.
okay, lets see you make a reining video and you just have a saddle on you horse and your doing the same the perfectly, you'll need something to hold on atlest once in a while....
shes holding the horn because her horse is trained by body position, her 'extra hand' here would normally be holding the reins, so she is just making sure her weight is balanced as normally as possible.
ok, so is this Hailey, I heard the registered name and I know it's not Roxy is this the one whose colt she is working with presently??? because she is retired now isn't she?
Stacy is just incredible. Her reining pattern she does to Tim Mcgraw's song, Live Like You Were Dying is amazing. She does it without any tack whatsoever. Brought tears to my eyes.
anyone else sick of stacy westfall? She has to ride without a bridle (or tack all together) so no one notices that her horses actually have very little talent.
I wouldn't say sick of her. It's a neat trick- horses should all be this responsive. It would teach a lot of riders to get out of the horse's face with their hands. This definitely is not one of her better rides, or horses. Personally, as much as I love reining & "naked" reining, I don't think she should be allowed to do this at competitions, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. It blinds people to the abilities of the horse. Clinics, sure. Futurities, etc? Not a chance.
Wow....you must have an extremely small brain capacity if you can't even see this horses extreme talent. the ability to respond so easy to leg commands with no bit or reins. And how can you be more stupid saying Stacy has to ride without tack!? That's her choice
Want to explain with your large brain capacity how "the ability to respond so easily to leg commands" has anything to do with "no bit or reins"? Your reply doesn't make sense! I meant that she "has" to ride without tack because if she didn't she would look like an amateur on a nice but not spectacular horse. Watch a video of Wimpys Little Step, then watch one of these again. Or GO to a show - you'll see Non Pros on horses about this talented.
This is crazy awesome. She's such an amazing rider/trainer!
Just one question: is it just me, or is the horse walking a little stiffly at the end? It might be the size distortion of the frame (it's skinnier than normal), or I might be going crazy. xD
I am very impressed by the smoothness of the horse and rider. Also the horse seems to enjoy every minute. Quiet impressive. I am sure Stacy just shakes her head and laughs at all the ignorant comments posted here. Hats off to Stacy! I'll admit I am green with envy!
My eyes tear up every time I watch this, that flying change of lead...so beautiful...the horse is so relaxed throughout the entire thing... working together in perfect harmony! What a team!
lol im sorry if the way i wrote that sounded like i was cocky but i didnt notice she was bridless thats why i asked what am i missing here. now i see and know thanks yes thats impressive. and i know i need to do alot more learning.
lol whats is the big deal? why is everyone cheering so much? i dont understand she didnt do anything special lol i do that all the time iv only been riding for a few days. and i ride a different horse each time. what am i missing in this video?
I personally believe that HUGE spurs are not the best, but I know many people who ride with the stubs, because it helps the horse feel the pressure to get them to move.
If you use spurs properly, you will notice that the horse is not bothered. He feels the pressure some other horses feel with boots. Obviously, she uses spurs so her horse can feel the pressure she needs to get him to go.
If she didnt use them right, that horse would be a darn mess.
I wish people would stop commenting about the spurs!
she is an amazing rider, if not the best!
i would like to see other people try and ride without a bridle, her spurs are just for reinforcement, i'm sure if she abused her horse then it wouldnt listen to her when shes riding with no saddle or bridle...but it does.
It's staggering on how many ignorant comments are posted here. If only half of you posting negative comments knew what you were talking about... Y'all need to get life and quit trolling.
People who have never taken their nose out of their "heartland" books wouldn't realize these horses are athletes and behave like them(reining is an OLYMPIC sport anyway:) Humans have bred in the traits that help them in their sport. As babies in the pasture they'll slide while they play. Sure I've known horses bred for pleasure that became a reiner or a cowhorse that went to eventing but that's mainly the horse, not the owner forcing them. Also spurs have come a long way since the wild west.
Reining is not in the Olympics; only dressage, show jumping, and eventing are, hun. Reining is trying to become an Olympic sport, but it isn't yet. It just doesn't quite have the international recognition the old-as-time sports do.
I think Stacy's skills and her clear bond with horses is amazing. There's not a horse in the world who would listen to, not to mention trust, anyone who abused them.
you people havent seen her newest video? no tack at all.. and no spurs on the boots.. its called good muscle control in the legs and a very well trained horse.
in the new vid of stacey westfall, watch how she gives the cues with the way she strokes the neck and mane.
I'm more impressed with the reining in this video than her 06 Congress ride. She has even said that the stroking of the neck was to relax her nerves, not to cue her horse.
TO the 22 dislikes...theres something wrong with you. because Stacy Westfall is awesome.

Does anyone else find it ironic that she is reining without reins?
Beautiful execution though. Not my style, but still VERY admirable. :)

Though it is in the WEG, if that's what you mean.

I think Stacy's skills and her clear bond with horses is amazing. There's not a horse in the world who would listen to, not to mention trust, anyone who abused them.
My opionion.

you people havent seen her newest video? no tack at all.. and no spurs on the boots.. its called good muscle control in the legs and a very well trained horse.
in the new vid of stacey westfall, watch how she gives the cues with the way she strokes the neck and mane.
ilovemydogstodeath 3 years ago
I'm more impressed with the reining in this video than her 06 Congress ride. She has even said that the stroking of the neck was to relax her nerves, not to cue her horse.
