  • In arcades in the west it was also known as Gunlock.

  • There was an english version called Layer Section for pc.

  • So this game is related to Raystorm right?...i liked that game a lot on the PS wish I could get this one

  • i like InecomCompany reviews

  • Mark, you should totally review Strike Gunner on the SNES!

  • i don't get why they called it different names in Japan or North America. Why not just keep its arcade name Rayforce???

  • @chrisz5z Stupid trademark problems.

  • @CervantesXV that makes sense i suppose

  • ビングの移植は神業。

    SE以外は文句なし!

  • on that cave spider thing, you only have to blow off 2 legs on one side, then it falls and dies.

  • Oh man this fucking game. I love this game so freaking much.

  • I really like the soundtrack, reminds me of Megaman X games for some reason

  • I own this game on the Sega Saturn...and it rocks,really..nice game for "some time between"

  • 0:53 Would you look at that! Impressive!!!

  • Can someone please explain this game's title? I mean, it kind of has layers I suppose, but not hugely. RayForce makes much more sense.

  • Actually, I have Raystorm and Raycrisis for the PS1 and believe me when I say, this 2 are the most amazing shooters out there for the PS1 EVER (Taking Einhander & Thunder Force V aside, which I also happen to own BTW). I wasn't aware that there was a Sega Saturn version. I have to find this one and add it to my shooter collection. Can't miss it.

  • the missile targeting reminds me of panzer dragoon

  • Battle Squadron for Amiga concept game, but is more advanced weapon crusher and explosion extender ;) Total annihilation! I love it!

  • @mariodivine Battle Squadron for Amiga concept game? What dya mean?

  • this game is like Xevious and M.U.S.H.A. and that's a good thing

  • Man I miss my saturn, especially my copies of radiant silvergun, vampire savour, street fighter zero 3 and other jap only games.I had a modded saturn that ran jap games full screen, full speed.the best console I've ever owned and I've owned over 10 consoles in my time.sold my saturn for peanuts to,bad move;(

  • I own Galactic Attack on Sega Saturn, I have to say this game is really fun, cheap on the price, but I find it kind of hard.

  • I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

  • It's called layer section because you are fighting through layers of the enemy installment in the earth. First of a trilogy with RayStorm and RayCrisis on PSX.

  • some of the enemies remind me of the boss's of silent bomber...played that game?

  • great stuff here dude, keep it up.

  • it's called layers because of the backgrounds. They're in layers. it must have looked epic when it first came out

  • This was also on the Taito Legends 2 xbox disc...

But I prefer the Saturn version. Mainly because the contrast and pixels look sharper.

    great game.

  • That boss you destroy the legs and it will fall. You dont have to blow up the main section.

  • heute gut drauf wer will mit mir cam chatn

  • Is it just me, or does this guy have a very soothing voice? Much better to listen to then anyone I've heard on an IGN review.

  • Mark does have one sexy voice.

  • @WinterSoilder IGN?.....he's (as far as I know) with IGN.......

  • The spritework in this game make me drool uncontrollably.

    So well done... ¦D

  • This is a Precuel of Raystorm my favorite shmup of all time.

  • i had the saturn back then and few good games but my friend who had the playstation had better once. back then it wasent so easy to those game. most stores didnt sell them so mostly had to order them from a catalog. so i wasted money on some shitty games but still toay i think the saturn is the better maschine. it just didnt had as good advertising and games as the playstation. still genesis is for me one of the last classic maschines beside snes. those where the days ^^

  • A shoot em up on saturn! No WAY!

  • Not a fan of these types of games but your reviews are never boring.

  • I wish i could release infinitely

  • me too

  • nice

  • Can you get Mushihimesama Futari, it just came out and is region-free (X360). Apparently it's the hardest shooter out there.

  • this definetely has some impress graphics, i like the "layer" effect from the industrial environments (bridges over roads etc)

  • reminds me of super aleste for the snes but with better graphics

  • Screw you Jon0387, know what's boring? YOUR MOM.

  • why his mom should be interesting to you? you already have his dad :}

  • I've never played Sega Saturn

  • shit neither have i but it seems cool i think the reason it failed in the us is becuase in japan got the best games while here in the us got lame ass games pffffffffffffft!

  • this kind of reminds me Ikaruga

  • the world arcade relese is called: "Gunlock"

this one wil work on MAME and its the same game...

  • all the names this game is

    named for....

    RayForce (Japan, arcade)

    Layer Section (Japan, home port)

    Galactic Attack (USA)

    Gunlock (Europe)

  • this looks alot like reflex, a pc shmup with a bullet reflect shield special,

i think the ship is identical.

even the main gun fire looks the same...

  • also none as gunlock too

  • This game looks completely amazing. If I had a saturn I'd def buy this.

  • Same here, looks good

  • One odd defect with this game is that unless you set it to use a vertical monitor many of the background effects are displayed incorrectly. For example the "warp" effect in the background at 0:53 is actually displayed wrong (it should be vertical not horizontal). There's also a really nice quasi-3D pan effect on level 2 that is completely ruined by this. This same problem is in the Us release also, except you can only access the vertical screen mode by using a code.

  • hey mark If i wanted one of these top-down shooters, which one would you recconmend?

  • Keep the Saturn reviews coming, there is a lot of great games that players missed out on because they only bought a Playstation which is a shame. Also would love to see some 3DO reviews.

  • Great Review!

  • I'm looking forward to Raystorm HD on XBLA.

    Anyone else?

  • i love love this guy

  • If you liked this game, try Ray Storm (Layer Section 2). Its for PS1, and its pretty intense. They've got another ship you can play as if you're getting tired of lasers and would rather shoot lightning. Pretty much the same lockon system as this game, but you can destroy entire battle cruisers and fill the screen with enemy rubble.

  • I sent him that on the website. Its totally an awesome game.

  • Haha! Another Featured SEGA product!

It keeps getting better and better! And the cherry on this icecream sundae? this game is a shmup!

I am in SEGA heaven! :P

  • Layer Attack Force!

  • Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease review Super Stardust HD for PS3!!

  • This looks like one kick ass game. Is it for PS2 as well? If not I don't mind buying a Sega Saturn. I want a Dream Cast more though.

  • Dream Cast

  • Yeah, that's what I said.

  • Dreamcast

  • Who cares about spelling. We are not in school here on You Tube. Get a life please.

  • YouTube

  • Youtube. With the period.

  • Your a loser, don't waste your time trying to correct people on Youtube

with no period to mock your ignorance.

  • Actually, you did it right. You said youtube in the middle of a sentence so no period needed. He needed the period because he was the jackass correcting someone so I was being an even bigger smartass correcting him.

  • ah sorry about that then, I just hate when people don't know how to mind there own. sorry.

  • lol its cool. i expect to be burned when i troll in a cloudy way.

  • is there any game like that for ipod touch/iphone?

  • A good N64 game to review is World Driver. You should do a review on it since you like a lot of racing games...

  • PLAY, MARK OF KRI!

  • a game this awesome needs several names, to stress how awesomely awesome it is, you see.

  • To quote AVGN, "A perfect example of a game that doesn't need to be on virtual boy". There you go! A perfectly good game similar to that 2.5D shooter on VB, perfectly good on a TV screen!

  • hail shmup's veteran!

  • nice dude=)

  • You know your intro makes me so happy IF you did shitty reviews I'd forgive you.

  • I like the quick review, although I question it's purpouse if it's pretty much identical game.

  • This is a tight game. Good stuff.

Soundtrack is by ZUNTATA who were the masters of traditional synth soundtracks for Sega shooters. Love 'em.

  • yeah! zuntata kicks ass, great group of composers!

  • an easy way to kill the spider boss in the crevice is to destroy two of its legs on either the left or right side of the wall. (ex: attack the top and bottom legs on the right side)

  • Raystorm for the playstation was based off of this game too (great game) I heard that they were going to release Raystorm on xbox arcade...has anybody heard similar?

  • ssf

  • can someone tell me whats the name of a working Sega Saturn emulator? I cant find a good one

  • ssf

  • yabause

  • @StopFear FUSION

  • u are aware that saturn games have to be downloaded as ISOS or CD image.... and with the emulator im sure u will need a kickstart

  • saturn emulators require an intense amount of CPU power, and most games aren't even emulated 100% properly; i wouldn't recommend it at all. the games take up a large amount of space as well, being CD images and whatnot. just go for the real console, they usually don't run that expensive! :]

  • im with ya buddy.... stick with the console hardly any emulators work properly..

  • Is that enough titles?

  • Sega Dreamcast had an EPIC shooter... Bangai-O.

  • Which is a port of an N64 game

  • Yeah, I bought that the day it came out for ULTRA 64...Pre-ordered it actually 2 copies!!..I don't think it ever made it to the USA N64. It should get a N64 port like Sina nd Punishment did for Wii Cirtual Console! The Dreamcast one is awesome because not only did they port it over, but completly replaced the Graphics! that just shows the care that Treasure puts into their games...Always System specific! A good N64 game to review would be Mischief Makers! Hey who gave me a thumbs down, and why?

  • It's kinda sad how Treasure never got a hit though, their games never sell well. With that many amazing games, they deserves more!

  • At least they are still alive. So many Companies after the 16-Bits, couldn't sustain their staff. It depends on how people view gaming when they make a purchase. One could look at it as mere enjoyment, or you can count a buy, as a vote for preservation. I bought 3 copies of Sin & and Punishment for Ultra 64. When Wii got it on VC, I downloaded it twice (I hav 2 Wiis). Games like Sin and Punishment 2 (Jan 2010) don't just happen. I skip Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Other M, to secure a Treasure title.

  • Is that a fore-runner of the X-Box logo at the end ??

  • The cake is a lie.

  • Looks bonertastic

  • Bonerific

  • I really enjoy looking at your reviews of the games of the past. I too am a fan of Sega but where is the review of Gaiares? I think it was in the top 5 of shooters of all time. It needs a reveiw.

  • 19th

  • What's up with he sick thumbdown raid? Anyway, nice review, and cool looking game tho ;o

  • sweet

  • this game is crazy hard

  • Its why I promised youtube I would see it to the end lol. I love Shmups my favorite genre so I am a little bias but this game is one I think deserves a "trilogy of names."

    Aberran of Axiom of Discord

  • nice review as always

  • Yeah man

  • Youtube isn't a race, being first to see a video isn't an achievement, saying first when you're the first commenter doesn't make you god.

GET THAT IN YOUR FUCKING HEAD.

  • uuuuhhhhhmmmm... that was heated. all of you are insane.
