gotta say, the hype about this video definitely overstated the hilarity. also, let's face it, helitack spend an awful lot of time on a helibase. you don't get a nickname like shade monsters because you're cuttin' hotline all the time...
Cwwigg doesnt realize helitack also IAs with only 2 or 3 ppl to incidents whereas hotshots and handcrews have 17-20 ppl to pound line.. Been there and done that for 5 years and let me tell you helitack aint no joke.. We fly in and are the first on scene while we wait for hotshots and handcrews to show up
Air Force would have better facilities and gear. They would probably be just as wack. Boredom is a big problem for some fire fighters and air crew. I guess this beats gigging rats in the sewer with a pike pole. (Probably a meaningless referrence if you have never been stationed in a place like Wheelus Air Base ,Libya.
Outstanding BMT (Boredom Mitigation Tactic, the stuff you do to keep from going insane when you're stuck on the helibase for days on end). We've GOT to incorporate this material into my district's S-270 training next spring. After all, one of the main goals of helitack is to keep your pilot entertained!
This is f' ing hilarious!! This is quality work NWCG needs to incorporate into S-270. Remdinds me of the good times we had with our downtime in the med unit this season. lol Thanks for posting this. Be safe! :]
This is awesome, I got in trouble because I owed my wildland tactics and strategies instructor and research paper and e-mail him this video before the paper. He found it hilarious other than me not working on my paper
This video is awesome! Somehow I don't think the helitack here in Nova Scotia telling me to back up, hold hover, and cut the load would look as good. Keep safe from the pilots and crew, Nova Scotia DNR
whats that last song called? (that 2nd one (the girl) is as fine as they come... but for some reason the hat turns me on... hmmm better call my doctor)
How aren't they firefighters? They fly helicopters that help to put out the fires don't they? Just because they're not on the ground doesn't mean they're not firefighters....
I think I was at that helibase... 'though not at the time. Ashland/St. Labre helibase for the Watt Draw fire in SE Montana? If I remember right, temps were in the 105-110 F range, and there was very little fire activity on the hill (no shot crews for miles ;) ).
Nice video. I might have to get a copy and use it for S-271 training!
Anyone who has been on a helibase for a very long extremely hot day running around in hardhats/flight helmets knows... that most helitack would prefer to be on the hill fighting the fire with the shots... just my opinion... oh and nice video!!!
LCES - I can't see the coolers, but adequate shade has been established, so we'll trust the iced drinks are already in place as well. GOOD WORK!
Obviously rookies however, as proper PPE measures had been taken. Long term helitack would have their collars down and unbuttoned, no g eye protection, and there would be a deliberate gap between their gloves and their shirt sleeves.
