I have a E39 530 and that does 155 mph on limiter . To be fair there isn't much more to get from the 3.0 litre motor . But these 4.4 540 E39 de restricted surely will hit about 165 mph no problem . Stock . Like the M5 those will keep climbing to about 180 mph . It's the aero dynamics that slow these cars down after the 150 mph mark . I can't imagine bmw designed them with those speeds in mind because there all restricted to 155 mph . I think it's a law set in place somewhere in the uk and Europ
Does anyone know the official starting prices of the E39 5 Series back when they were in production? Preferably CAD but I'm just curious how much the price has changed over the years due to inflation and advancement.
The fuel consumption of a 540i 6 speed is not really bad by US standards. There are 4 clyinder, front wheel drive family sedans sold here which struggle to stay in the high 20 mpg range on the highway. A 540i can do this all day, cruising at our pathetic, sub-100mph speed limits. :-) BMW engines and transmissions are expensive, but that's because they are efficient and sophisticated for what they are.
if i think about gas i go buy me ford fista or chev.cobolt.but the V8 has somthing only some people will understand .and now with ford 5.0 and e39 5.0 its good to have one for fun.
That is awesome! Where do you live, and how do you get away with those speeds! I would go to prison if I got caught doing that in my 540i! You should have reset the consumption and put it up in the OBC, it would go through the roof! Great vid mate.
Lookin at buying a 2003 M-Sport, 100k miles, perfect condition 14k. Only issue is its auto/steptronic. I wish it were stick, only 1,200 2003 M-Sport made it to the US, so it's hard to find...

Gotta love the torque in that motor. At 4k RPMs in 6th gear I believe is still increasing the speed considerably. Awesome car and more power and sophistication than any US car, even the 2010 ones.

Us Americans like everything big. My dad didn't grow up in America, but since he moved here he has conformed to the American's love for big engines. Back in the day, a BMW 528i was big enough for him, but these days he drives around in a 2003 Lincoln Navigator with a ridiculous 5.4 liter engine that consumes 22 liters of 93 octane fuel (the highest, most expensive pump gasoline available here) for every 100 kilometers
And by the way, i think the smallest engine Americans ever really bought from BMW was the 330i, because appearantly 6 cylinder engines have to be at least 3 liters big or something (A 528i engine is pretty small for some of us)
the best fuel you can get here has got 100 octane. but i think most americans think that a 520i or 520d has no power... but you should have a ride with one of these babys! :) they're moving better than a 4.6 monster like the crown victoria. our 525d has got 177 HP, and the acceleration is very beasty... =) go to a BMW dealer and ask for a testing drive on a 525d or a 520i, you won't believe how powerfull these small engines really are.
Yeah, US highways are speed limited to 70 miles per hour, which is only about 120 kilometers per hour.
And to Americans, a car should be gasoline powered, which I think is crazy because diesel engines are so much better.
Also, I think these days the smallest engine BMW markets in the US today is the 123i, which is not very popular. Most people here go for the 535i at the least (if they choose a BMW), and Crown Vics are popular here.
the 535i isn't sold anymore here in germany! =) because nobody wanted this engine. most people here buy the 520i, 525i or 530i. and everybody who wants a bigger engine takes the 550i! :D that's the way it is in germany! :) most americans think that less cubic capacity brings no power, but a good turbo charged 2,5 litre engine is sometimes better than a 3 litre engine...
Yeah, a small engine can have a lot of power! The Lotus Elise has a 1.8 liter engine that can beat a silly ol' Crown Vic! But i guess here in the US, small engines have a connotation to being economic, which someone I know regards as "something some homosexual from California would buy." Of course, I disagree with him. There's nothing wrong with being economic and having better performance than a car that is not economic, such as a silly Crown Victoria.
yep... the taxes for cars with bigger engines ae very high in germany. so my father wanted to have a medium diesel, and the from the money we saved because of this small engine, my father bought new rims! :) and when there is a speed limit of 70 mph in te usa, why do they drive so big engines? you allready can't drive the top speed... and for reaching 70 mph a 520d is good enough! :D our 525d runs about 245 km/h, a 550i is just 10 k/mh faster...
Gasoline engines are much more responsive than diesels yes diesels have all the torque and economy but who says that makes them "better?" It's more of a preference.
Smallest engine BMW is the 128i, 328i, or 528i with the 3.0L. Most buy a 328i just because they want the BMW badge. If anyone buys a Crown Vic I think most of us Americans would call them a moron :)
Our "premium" which is admittedly slightly lower octane than yours, was $2.87 a gallon yesterday - I live in Arizona, a state with low fuel tax. According to Google's magical currency converter that's GBP 1.79.
Yeah really, it's idiocy. Your gallons are equivalent to 1.2 US gallons but it's still a huge difference in price. We also have very few diesel engines here - 335d, a few Mercedes and VW and that's about it. No one really cares about fuel economy.
I used to spend 30% more running a 1.6 petrol compared to a 1.9 turbo diesel giving out 50% more power. When running costs are an issue its kind of a no brainer.
@horseburger yeah they got it easy in my country a gollon is about $5 ... allmost double, good thing is that in this small country no one cares about emissions or all of that sh.t
@4TaktRollerNeinDanke who cares about comsumtion? For example campare this with 5.0 ford mustang shelby. 525d is very slow car. Ford victoria have 4.6 engine 220hp beat stock diesel with finger in the ass.
Great video, I have a 1997 540i and I had it delimited. It maxed out at 180mph (used a TomTom GPS) as the speedo doesn't go up that high. I have to say at 155 mph (the manufacturer set limit) the car is very stable feeling but at 180 (acutally 176 to be honest) it didn't feel quite as stable. I think I would have been in trouble if it wasn't for having some good Pirelli's on it.
How much does this car est bensine in town? or on highway? i want to buy a 2.8 - 3.5 engine, i hope it won't eat about 20 litres, + i drives like 2300rpm, next, 2300 rpm, next :) Never even got 5000rph, never touched the red line also, is this car worth it ?
You think my car is on rollers? That's such a stupid comment. I don't even know what to say about that! I tape the camera to my steering wheel, so everyone can get a clear view of the speedometer and tachometer.
I 100% believe You, that this is not on rollers. Why ? Because on dyno rollers ASC/DSC and ABS lights are on. Reason- front wheels aren't moving and DSC/ABS goes into failsafe mode.
@e39driver yeah ur car is on rollers...u want us to believe you that its not? then have a second guy with a camera taping the speedometer and also an actual view of the street that your supposedly doing "240 MPH" on...but im not encouraging you to do this, so please if ur gonna do something crazy like this, then by all means, do it at your own risk and be careful.
@lardospanko You're such a stupid ass idiot. Rollers? I didn't know dyno shops simulated wind noise and vibration. And he wasn't going to 240 MPH since KM/H is not the same as MPH. Go back to 2nd grade, damn chimp. ooo ooo eee eee
@lardospanko 240 mph.....you might be retarded, if you knew anything about this car you would know it tops out electronically around 130 mph, I own one myself, why does it say 240 then? metric system in europe is kilometers an hour. i don't know everything about cars, but i know a fair amount enough to let you know that you should not be anywhere near a car
@swagman9555 year? the 95 electronically tops out at 129, that's what mine is, i put in an intake and X3 Performance chip in my 95 540i manual and i think i was able to push about 135 with some wind behind me, damned govern chip, i believe the e39 model topped out around 150
That's why it's three times safer to drive on the German Autobahn than it is on our North American highways. The Autobahn is a German highway; 55% of which is speed limit free! This is a prime example as to why you should educate yourself before you post a stupid comment and make yourself look like a f***ing retard!
got to love the 540, the scary thing is, when you get above 200kph and you feel its wanting more! i may have had mine up to 238.. of course on a closed road.. *cough* but its not just the speed in a line its the speed you can go into the corners, they are such good cars and so nice to drive. and god they feel good when your thundering down a road hearing all 8 cylinders exploding watching trees go past way to fast.
Nice. I'm from New-Zealand, here we get BMW's rather cheap now days. I am a previous Owner of a nice 1999 740IL Motorsport, Dark blue :), Living in Australia now i get my 540i this Wendsday, I'm a current owner of a 1999 Audi 1.8t Avant, i miss BMW that's why I'm going back :), BTW, my 1.8 turbo with Performence ECU is seems to be the same if not quicker than most cars on the road :P
I wasn't really pushing it, i had it in 6th gear the whole time! I've noticed that you don't have any car vids to back up your smart ass comment? i understand your misery, I could just imagine how boring life would be if i were broke!
All bmw's here in Canada are governed to 155mp/h or 250km/h. The car is now equipped with Dinan ECU and Dinan Intake. She tops out at around 280 or 290km/h . I can't test the top speed anymore because the police can seize your car, suspend your license and give you a maximum fine of $10,000 oh yea and a criminal record. since this law was passed, deaths rates due to street racing haven't even gone down. 87% of death related accidents occur under the posted speed limit. Bunch of F**king idiots!
Fuck me bro, I thought BMW limited there top speed on cars for the 540's? How comes you blew it full, damn! if only I could find a stretch of road like that.
I touched 195 on my 2000 540i, it wouldn't let me go more for some reason.
Nice E39 man, I bet you can't wait to get out of school everyday so you can drive back home. Btw, where is your school? I might tranfer there so I can drive my E34 525i doing 230 ish each day lol
Check your engine. Only the M60 and the European M52 engines are affected.
The M60 was fitted to all the E34 530i and 540i V8 cars. It was not fitted to the earlier E28 5 Series or the later E39 5 Series. Also, the early E34 3.0 cars (pre-1991) were M30 powered 6-cylinder cars and were not affected.
Maintanence records are very important! I would probably go with the 98 540i, but just remember it is a ten year old car so it's going to be alittle rough around the edges. The BMW 540i will also be more expensive in the long run. Good luck!
Question: In purchasing a used BMW (or any car), what's more important, how many miles are on it or how many years are on it? I found a 2003 525i (one owner) with 139,000 miles on it at a dealership asking $13,900 for it. On the other hand, I found a 1998 540i with only 89,000 miles on it (another dealer) for $8,900. Which is the better deal??
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't? Once the summer time comes, i'll make another video showing the true top speed of this vehicle. I clearly wasn't really ripping it, I had it in 6th gear the whole time.
yea thats a great price. That's going to be the E34 model which i don't think is as aerodynamic as the E39 models. I just hope you're good at fixing cars because BMW mechanics arent cheap. This car costs me about $600 a month just in maintenance. Thats why i would recommend getting a BMW with warranty and at the end of the day it probably wouldn't be that much more expensive.
If you love your BMW as well as most people do. if you do not service it on a regular basis you will hate BMW's an claim there junk.. this happend to my mate hes a dummass! iv had mine serviced it on a regular basis your car will prob manage to top 400.000km without an engine rebuild witch is bugger all
Yea thats pretty funny, did you know that stock bmws are equipped with a speed limiter that will not let the cars go past 250 km/h. You definetly have a big mouth for someone who takes the bus!
that's the worst thing i've ever seen, i literally have the same exact car with very little mods and i can get it to 275 faster haha! it has to be a credit to the driver, not very good i guess haha, learn to drive homo
This was in 6th the whole time, what do you expect. Now my car will go way past the 250 km/h mark. So why dont you do a top speed run and i'll do the same and well see whos faster?
you mean a stock 4.4 liter pushing 282 horse and 310 pound feet of torque, at the time of the video but now theres a lot more modifications to the car.
woah man thats pretty good for a car that weighs 2000 kilograms wet, my old rx-7 hit that speed once and scared the crap outta me, the steering felt so weird. BTW is that just a stock 4.0 litre v8 in that 540i?
if you look very closely you can watch the fuel gauge move down

Not a problem if its looked after. The V8 is a total monster and a pleasure to drive.
It carried myself and my family for 40,000 miles safely and quickley.I love these cars.I changed for and Audi S6 Avant 1996 Nogaro Blue.
.totally incredible..much sportier..it feels like a sportscar inside..Loving it.
122K is nothing to a well cared for German V8..

the 535i isn't sold anymore here in germany!
4TaktRollerNeinDanke 2 years ago
Yeah, a small engine can have a lot of power! The Lotus Elise has a 1.8 liter engine that can beat a silly ol' Crown Vic! But i guess here in the US, small engines have a connotation to being economic, which someone I know regards as "something some homosexual from California would buy." Of course, I disagree with him. There's nothing wrong with being economic and having better performance than a car that is not economic, such as a silly Crown Victoria.
glokc19 2 years ago
yep... the taxes for cars with bigger engines ae very high in germany. so my father wanted to have a medium diesel, and the from the money we saved because of this small engine, my father bought new rims! :) and when there is a speed limit of 70 mph in te usa, why do they drive so big engines? you allready can't drive the top speed... and for reaching 70 mph a 520d is good enough! :D our 525d runs about 245 km/h, a 550i is just 10 k/mh faster...
4TaktRollerNeinDanke 2 years ago
It depends on the state what the speed limit is.
If anyone buys a Crown Vic I think most of us Americans would call them a moron :)
cconant13 2 years ago
@cconant13
Smallest engine BMW in the states is 2.8?
In the uk the 3 series for example comes with 1.6, 1.8, 2.0,2.3, 2.5, 2.8 and 3.0
horseburger 2 years ago
Well the 328i is technically a 3.0, but yes that's the smallest engine we get here, even in the 1 Series.
cconant13 2 years ago
@cconant13
How much does fuel cost over there now? In the uk its almost £5 a gallon.
horseburger 2 years ago
Our "premium" which is admittedly slightly lower octane than yours, was $2.87 a gallon yesterday - I live in Arizona, a state with low fuel tax. According to Google's magical currency converter that's GBP 1.79.
cconant13 2 years ago
@cconant13
Holy cow. No wonder you all have 58 litre engines and cars that weigh more then the moon.
I spend upto £5,000 a year on fuel.
horseburger 2 years ago
Yeah really, it's idiocy. Your gallons are equivalent to 1.2 US gallons but it's still a huge difference in price. We also have very few diesel engines here - 335d, a few Mercedes and VW and that's about it. No one really cares about fuel economy.
cconant13 2 years ago
@cconant13
I guess that 99% of taxis in the UK are diesel.
I used to spend 30% more running a 1.6 petrol compared to a 1.9 turbo diesel giving out 50% more power. When running costs are an issue its kind of a no brainer.
horseburger 2 years ago
@cconant13
when the gas prices jumped to more than 4.00 dollars a gallon, people didnt drive at all.
zwiefelhofer11 2 years ago
@horseburger yeah they got it easy in my country a gollon is about $5 ... allmost double, good thing is that in this small country no one cares about emissions or all of that sh.t
michelinov 2 years ago
@horseburger lol not really the smallest one we've gotten in the states is the 318ti it was a hatchback e36 3 series with a 4cyl 1.8 ;)
BimmerFreakE39 2 years ago

Great video, I have a 1997 540i and I had it delimited. It maxed out at 180mph (used a TomTom GPS) as the speedo doesn't go up that high. I have to say at 155 mph (the manufacturer set limit) the car is very stable feeling but at 180 (acutally 176 to be honest) it didn't feel quite as stable. I think I would have been in trouble if it wasn't for having some good Pirelli's on it.

You think my car is on rollers? That's such a stupid comment. I don't even know what to say about that! I tape the camera to my steering wheel, so everyone can get a clear view of the speedometer and tachometer.
e39driver 3 years ago 4
I 100% believe You, that this is not on rollers. Why ? Because on dyno rollers ASC/DSC and ABS lights are on. Reason- front wheels aren't moving and DSC/ABS goes into failsafe mode.
bmw740v8 2 years ago 11

Check your engine. Only the M60 and the European M52 engines are affected.
The M60 was fitted to all the E34 530i and 540i V8 cars. It was not fitted to the earlier E28 5 Series or the later E39 5 Series. Also, the early E34 3.0 cars (pre-1991) were M30 powered 6-cylinder cars and were not affected.

e39driver 4 years ago
Maintanence records are very important! I would probably go with the 98 540i, but just remember it is a ten year old car so it's going to be alittle rough around the edges. The BMW 540i will also be more expensive in the long run. Good luck!
e39driver 4 years ago
Question: In purchasing a used BMW (or any car), what's more important, how many miles are on it or how many years are on it? I found a 2003 525i (one owner) with 139,000 miles on it at a dealership asking $13,900 for it. On the other hand, I found a 1998 540i with only 89,000 miles on it (another dealer) for $8,900. Which is the better deal??
BrianAbruzzi 4 years ago
Also aviod all V8's and 2.8 engines build before mid 1998. Look up Nikasil and Bore Wear, best avoided!

yea thats a great price.
