  • HI! Ok this is officially my first youtube comment, ever, so yay for me. lol, I love this video. Just tried it last nt & i dont think my brushes have ever been this clean since the first day they where used. Wow. Super easy. Q. how do you clean ur brushes between clients? Do you already have a video showing this? Cuz that would AWESOME!! Tks for all the great advice & knowledge. Kisses from Texas

  • my brush smells like my shampoo!

  • After washing, you should tape your brushes upside down on your bathroom mirror overnight. That way the water will never get into the ferrule and your brushes will dry completely. :)

  • :D You filmed this on my bday!! Thanks Kandee, it's been quite and it's only getting better...

  • Happy 3 years Kandee! Faithful follower since you started out on YouTube!

  • Congratulations Kandee on 3 years of youtube!

  • Kandee, you give such great tips. I've spent a fortune on brush cleaners that didn't do as well as what you've shown using products we already own. I do still love a product called "Brush-off" for everyday cleaning, or if i need to use the same brush, in 2 or more different colors. Thank you, again.

  • aww first vid

  • in honour of your anniversary, you should remake this video!

  • I'm so glad you made this!!! This video is the beginning of all the amazing videos you have made, all the makeup tutorials, the blogs, your kiddos growing up! We love you, and we love watching your life unfold!! I wish I was brave enough to send you a video response. Maybe one day :) XOXO

  • So glad I found this! I really needed it! Thank you Kandee :)

  • just what i really need! thank you doll! =)

  • I'm sending this vid to my daughter! lol...I bought her a large pro set of brushes when she was in high school, and they are holding up great...but she needs to CLEAN them! Ugh, and her friends in the dorm @ school all use them, too. I told her she was going to get pinkeye or worse...

  • :D Kandee Johnson FTW! <3

  • It sounds like you had a cold when you did this vid.

  • I randomly came across this video and I have to say, I'm really impressed that three years later you're still responding to comments on this video!

  • I usually use hot water and anti-bacterial soap to clean my make-up brushes.

  • @XcrookedhaloX oh try not to you anti-bacterial that has alcohol in it, it's really bad for natural hair brushes and for the part where the bristles attach to the metal. xoxo

  • Can you do this for bigger brushes (like powder & foundation brushes) as well?

  • @Pelfrey123 oh yes! safe for all brushes!

  • but.. what kind of shampoo :/

  • @StaciiVenganza I use any organic or gentle shampoo. Typically what you use on your hair, because it hasn't made you break out, so it should be safe on your "face brushes"! hugs!

  • I was always scared to use shampoo, thinking some of it would stick to the brushes and make me breakout. So I used one of my clear facial cleaners. So...shampoo doesn't cause irritation? Neat.

  • i use the brush guard to dry them.. up side down in a cup !!

  • can i use some other type of oil like (corn oil)

  • @JusstIsabell88 no, just virgin olive oil

  • I use alcohol. Its super fast and they dry up faster.

  • @karenluv310 alcohol will damage the the bristles and can cause damage to the way the base where the bristles are attached- you could also use Beauty So Clean to disinfect them, which dries faster than the alcohol but is much better for your brushes too! xo

  • @kandeejohnson that's funny...ont their site, beauty so clean lists alchol in their formulation. LOL

  • @choochalah Yea that helps it dry faster but pure Alcohol would ruin your brushes real quick! :)

  • @choochalah it may be in their to dilute a heavier ingredient, but straight alcohol is not good! ha ha ha

  • Awee I remember when I started watching your videos shortly after this was made. I've loved your videos and your personality ever since!! :)

  • thats so helpful

  • i have a q cuz im new to using brushes. so you dont clean them after each use? you should clean them once a week?

  • @juicypear07 you should spot clean after you've used it and deep clean it once a week. juicystar07 has a video about that and shows you how to do both

  • 70 people fucked up their brushes ^-^

  • aww Kandee's first video!! I love you Kandee Johnson. Seriously<3 to death:D

  • nice

  • @sezzyberr use dawn dish soap it removes the oil

  • The pro's are saying to use 99.9 percent alcohol...cleans santitizes and dries your brushes quickly. I have used mineral oil on the brushes with the really thick eye liner....than clean with mild soap / water and alcohol. Much easier than bathing your brushes and they dry much faster. If this is what the top pro's are doing (they say it doesn't dry out or ruin your brushes) then that is probably the better way to go

  • @liz48170 i use alcohol when im on shoots because it does clean the brushes fully and dries instantly, this is more a deep thorough cleaning of the brushes for a weekly basis that youd dry overnight, because i have found that the alcohol does cause build up in some of my eye brushes.

  • We dont have olive oil and my brushes need this really bad...can I use canola oil or vegetable oil??

  • can you do this to your face brushes or no?

  • is it important to use olive oil?

  • Kandeeeeeee PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help!! I washed my brushes with olive oil but I can't get the olive oil out now!! I've rinsed them and washed them with baby shampoo like a million times.. How else can I get the olive oil out?? :'( Please help - I can't use my makeup brushes now!! :(

  • @sezzyberr Try using detergent to get the olive oil out.

  • @sezzyberr Hi, I don't know if this will work, but it happened once to my brush as well, my brush was oily after wash. Thus I 'dry' the brush with some face powder, to make it dry or to absorb the oil, then wash it again with shampoo, it's better then, may be you can try to see if it's work for you! Hope it helps!

  • I heard it was really bad to wet your brushes with water?? is that not true? what about the duo fiber brushes?

  • ALWAYS place them flat while drying, never upright, so it doesn't loosen up the glue that bonds the bristles. I used to be a make-up artist in Chicago before becoming a comedian in LA, long story, teehee! SheilaChalakee(dot)com

  • can you do a tutorial on what kind of brushes you should have in your makeup kit...like the essentuals.

  • kandee is it the same process with powder and foundation brushes

  • can u use vegetable oil instead? lol I don't have olive oil :/

  • @ashleighann2269 Same thing

  • Kandee's first video ever :) It's so crazy to see how far she's come.

Kandee, I love you and you are my idol. You inspire me to keep doing what I love and not to listen to what haters say!

Thank you for being Kandee Johnson :)

  • thsi is awesome, was looking for a way to clean my new brushes before I used them.

  • you sound kind of sick? :(

  • lol i used to use liquid soap and water.

  • Thanx for the great tips!

  • Great video. So much easier and cheaper than other was I have been shown.

  • can you use reg oil???

  • @assfros no

  • I wanted to watch this but it wont load!

  • Ohh I have been needing a video like this for quite sometime.. Thank you Kandee!

  • Kandee sent me ;)

  • Kandee sent me here ^^

  • /watch?v=wjrbWrbapwE nuff said.

  • So, the olive oil residue left in the brushes- does that mean that it will take longer for the brushes to dry? Or, do you use them even when they aren't totally dry?

    Thanks:)

    BOP

  • Oh my God thank you so much for this!!! I didn't know about the olive oil at all! I use brushes all the time for pretty much everything, I used to buy cheap ones because I was always throwing them away when they got too dirty. But they're so rubbish, leave hair all around the face when you apply the make up, so I've decided to buy a proper collection of brushes from Dior and thanks to this tut I'll be able to keep them nice and clean and they will last longer! Thanks so so much!! *hug*

  • Kandeee! Thank you sooo sooo much for this awsome tutorial.. My brushes are super soft and clean. I used baby shampoo after and layed them out to dry.. Awsome thanks so much! Can you do a few home remedies tutorials (like how to facial masks... Rid acne.. Etc...)

    Mahalos..

  • This was your first video!!!!

  • my brushes still have olive oil in them after d everything! :( how do i get id of the olve oil?

  • Kandee I've seen about all of your videos and you seen so much happier in your most recent videos. You have helped me through so much and I just want to thank you!! :)

  • Hi! I tried out your technique but substituted the extra virgin olive oil with baby oil. Then instead of using a sponge, I put baby shampoo in the palm of my hand and worked the brush there. I really enjoyed seeing the make up and gunk coming off on the paper towel, but found the oil quite hard to get out of the brush after that. Hope everything will be all right in the morning after all my brushes are dry. Cheers! Thanks for the tutorial!

  • Is this your first video?

  • @Ciara01995 No, that's what actaully removes the make up. You can use it as a natural make up remover it's completly safe to use straight on your face:)

  • better to use the oil from a plate instead of paper- the paper just absorbs it so you end up wasting more oil than necessary. just sayin' :) however, that's the best method to clean the makeup brushes, especially if they're natural bristles or very expensive. other wise, stick to water+shampoo and call it a day (some cosmetics manufacturers clearly advise this on the packaging of the brushes- elizabeth arden, for example).

  • I LOVE YOU KANDEE! THANKS FOR SHARING ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US!!

  • Instead of extra-virgin, can i use regular olive oil?

  • @BalletFreak1122 yeah I kinda thot she sounded sad too. But shes Kandee she can always cheer up :)

  • Agh, found it!

  • @GiraffesAreAWESOMEEE thanx :) i need to get some new ones lol

  • does she sound sad to anyone? or is it just me? She doesn't sound her happy self..... mabey shes just tired :)

  • i did this without the olive oil and it worked the same

  • @Xtremegirl900 thanks for saying so i was wondering :D

  • @nikiichan ur welcome :D

  • should clean our makeup brushes...i like ur way to clean the brushes... thank u:)

  • Is it okay if it isn't extra virgin?

  • @MichelleSymuong thankss. :D

  • can you use another type of oil rather than olive oil?

  • I am so going to try that lol oh btw how

    Would u wash makeup sponges??

  • @MCHaveFaith i dont think you do... you just buy new ones, their super cheap :)

  • Hi! Can I use extra virgin coconut oil instead?

  • you should try liquid dish soap with the olive oil it helps the brushes get a lot more cleaner and it will not make your brushes as oily.

  • i cleaned my mac 187 yesterday using this method. i used it the next day (today), and i had major difficulties applying my foundation for some reason. it did not look smooth, it patched, and did not have good coverage like it usually does... what happened to my brush..

  • @alaurashayna On the MAC website many people complain about their brushes shedding and applying makeup badly after being washed period.

  • is there another way to clean make up brushes without using olive oil?

  • @BeckLikesOreos

I think there were older ones that aren't on here any more, well apparently ;)

  • is this her first video?

  • this cna be done with all my brushes? (powder brush, foundation bruch etc. ?)

  • @cbetancourt4 yeah works really good too

  • Kandee can i use this on my sponge brushes or what ever they are called??

  • hi kandee, do you have to use extra virgin olive oil or can you use any kind of oil???? thanx so much....

  • I don't have extra virgin olive oil. Will any kind of oil do? baby oil or something like that?

  • Lol I also use my sons shampoo to clean my brushes, hmm I never knew why I chose that one but it leaves them smelling good lol

  • why does anyone put a professional make-up artist down?she helping people and a good soul, you can tell by her aura...Kandee a good person and for someone like me who not good with make-up, I have her resources to learn from. Most people in this industry charge a lot of money for a make-up class. Thank you Kandee!

  • @TheIchiban1974 some people are just dumb. lol 5 months later xD

  • good I always run out of brush cleaner, never thought to use extra virgin olive oil...Thanks girl! your awesome...

  • Oh my gosh, this is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • this worked perfectly for my brushes! love your videos kandee <3

  • l agree too...

  • i just saw a similar video from MakeUp Geek TV, so who's original?

  • Kandee posted this video 2 weeks after MakeupGeek did hers. Kandee is a copycat guys.

  • @KandeeLies

    seriously?

  • @KandeeLies Bwahaha you actually took time out of your day to create an account called KandeeLies.... wow that's really embarassing for you.

  • Should I try it when my brushes are duo fibre ??

  • can you use like vegetable oil or like canola oil? or does it have to be olive

  • does it applies to both synthetic brushes&animal hair brushes?

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I COULD GO FROM A COWLICK TO SIDE SWEPT BANGS AND HAVE THE BANGS BE ABLE TO LAY FLAT ON MY FOREHEAD? PLEEZ HELP

  • @HoosierPup98 yes, just blow dry your bangs down

  • what are your favorite brushes?

  • @KandeeKult

How absolutely ignorant to think that girls and make up artists would not be using the same techniques. A lot of people use the same techniques when it comes to beauty because.. THEY WORK. She probably got a ton of requests for the video, because people want to see HER take on it

  • How did you get the idea to use olive oil to clean your brushes? I noticed that Marlena posted her video 2 weeks before you did:

    makeupgeek (dot) com/tutorials/how-to-clean-your-makeup-brushes

  • @KandeeKult lots of people use olive oil to clean there brushes? not just the girl you are suggesting she took the idea off of?

  • @honeyheart97 lol try watching marlena's video, it's amazing how similar the videos are, justsayin

  • @QueenChristy mmm i know theyre exactly the same. its not coincidence.

  • @KandeeKult Both Kandee and Marlena are professionals. Great minds think alike.

Cleaning your brushes with olive oil is a really basic idea, which Marlena did not invent.

There are tons of tutorials here on youtube using that same idea.

    :L

  • Thanks.

  • I got my crown brush sets and so far so good!! I recieved them in about 3-4 wks!!

  • I wasn't happy with the KANDEE/crown brush thing. I emailed them, like said to do for international, and they never mailed me back. I emailed them like two days after she posted about it.. :/

I missed my chance. I never got an invoice.

  • Thaks soo muck kandee!

  • can someone link me the crown brush video? i can't find it

  • @rino1096 she deleted it because the KANDEE code deal is over.

  • I got my crown brushes in the mail today. SOOOO EXCITED TO USE THEM!

  • @iamoliviagrace Mine still doesn't say shipped... it says "processing" under the order status. You would think the could at least reply to my emails...

  • @elaineechon I ordered the brush set on December 16th and they haven't even shipped yet! I'm really up set that they don't reply to my emails or anything. I'm a patient person, and I would like to at least know that they will come eventually and that they didn't just steal my 30 dollars.

  • wow, kandee. ur first video. I have seen everyone of your videos. You changed so much. You're so energetic and hyper in your newer videos.

  • Is this your first video? :)

  • @elaineechon yeah i saw it online too!

  • @kandeejohnson Can I use any other type of oil?

  • great video....do you have one for the daily brush cleaning???

    Thank you!

  • Loved the video! It really helped!! :))

  • oh kandee ur a miracle worker ive just been rinsing my brushes in water and it has not been going so well but thans to u i know how to do it the right way

  • Can you make a "how to remove make-up from it's original casing video" cause I just bought some z palattes and can't put my make-up in them.

  • Olive oil is a great night time moisturizer, a great finger nail nourshment, it's great for the scalp if you want shiney soft hair, it's an awesome make up remover!!!! I use it a lot!

  • I dont understand how in your latest video you're going on about how those brushes youre showing off are AWESOME and better than mac... when clearly you can see that they havent been used, and you have NEVER used one of them in your video or EVER mentioned anything about them.. or atleast if you did you never specified it. Kandee, I used to love you alot, but it kinda seems like you're become one of those youtubers who lie about products because they are paying you for them.

  • @annaj07 Did you not hear how she said she wasn't being paid by Crown to endorse their product? She uses the Mac brushes because they're available to the public unlike the Crown brushes that are only sold to professionals. Pay attention!

  • @eurogrl06 okay well obviously they have some sort of deal going on if when you buy them and enter the code "kandee" you get a discount. and NO...OBVIOUSLY i didnt hear her say she wasnt being paid by Crown.

  • @eurogrl06 Crown brushes are not only sold to professionals. They have been available for years- Crown manufactures brushes for many other companies. Before you are snotty to someone else you should have your facts straight. Crown brushes (including the exact sets Kandee is promoting) have been sold through other sites such as Coastal Scents. She may not be receiving direct payment to speak about the products- but there is most probably some form of compensation. Nothing is free anymore.

  • @annaj07 I agree with you 100%. These are MAC brushes. We have watched her use MAC brushes in most of her videos. She may have owned Crown brushes before but I highly doubt she thinks they are better than MAC. I feel like she isn't being honest and it isn't a good feeling.

  • @ontheonepath she uses MAC brushes in mot her vids cuz we could buy them where as crown brushes we couldnt,

  • @candywood91601 YES we could! How come nobody READS??? Crown brushes have been for sale to the public for years. Look at coastal scents (dot) com. They have the same sets with reviews available and have had them up for a very very long time.

  • what would you recommend for daily use? I can't stand when my brushes are dirty! I clean them everyday using the method of Michelle phan i believe with the dawn dish washing soap and extra virgin olive oil and I properly dry them upright with brush guards. Any suggestions for everyday? I do use the sephora brush cleaner but the color is still there and it bothers me. lol Thanks Kandee
