So it appears to me, that Irish immigrants moved to the Appalachian Mountains, drank too much Moon Shine, and then suddenly started dancing like Ernest T. Bass. Could this be the case? Just mix up Irish, Buck, Clogging, and Step Dancing in general, and have a HoeDown ThrowDown!
One of many tragedies of the world is that most camera men are not also dancers; so it never dawns on them to tarin the camera on the dancer, full-body, especially the feet; and nowhere else.
This is great. The best part is that this talented dancer heads directly for the worst part of the stage and just because. It's too funny. People began to laugh and it's because they caught it immediately. This dancer has a sense of humor. So do some of the crowd. This is what I love.
Beautiful! Thank you, Clare Bannerman for these wonderful videos. I am so delighted to find music and dance the way it is supposed to be. Please keep posting these wonderful videos. Anything before 1970 is especially appreciated.
I stumbled across this when I was looking for African-American Seriorty(Sorry if I spelled that wrong) step dancing, I think Irish step dancing is pretty cool.
someone said there "the stage looks dangerous" thats obviously a comment from one who knows very little of its construction - if it didnt spring like it does it would be usleless to dance on......well done on your great videos Clarebannerman
this is where clogging & flat foot dancing came from in america, they didn't have taps on their shoes, they used a wooden board & had wooden heels-great film, thanks for posting!!
Very impressive... It is little wonder that John Cullinane has become an Irish dancing master and the world's leading authority on Irish dance history.
Is that Paddy the ' Thistle ' standing behind the drummer? the only Cashel person I recognise in the crowd.I will always remember my childhood days growing up under the shadow and protection of the Rock.I left in 1959,and now live in australia. Thanks Clarebannerman for the memories.
Proof that the old way is just as beautiful (and in many ways more so, I think) than the flashier stuff of today. Both have their merits, but this is just amazing
this is so amazing. i love the traditional irish dancing, and this guy got EVERY SINGLE BEAT he was supposed to in that hornpipe!! which, trust me, is VERY hard to do. the rhythm gets so fast at times, it's easy to miss a beat. great video!
wonderful to see some of the grass routes being shown to the world. great speed of music, however my love is with Ottawa Valley Step Dancing, check out and type in Rebecca Ardley
Yes .. a beautiful, proper rhythm and pace to this fiddling (i.e. a touch s-l-o-w-e-r than might be otherwise), thus permitting the dancer to better demonstrate his skill .. par excellence !! Great posting !!
The best! So rhythmic and clean! This video is fantastic. Any more?I am very happy that the music was at a sensible speed. Today people play like they were set on fire so I cannot even follow or enjoy the melody because it goes by in a blur.
If this dance were being performed in my town, the song would be played at breakneck speed and by the end the dancer would look like he was going to expire. The fiddlers around here play really fast for some reason! Is it the Lord of the Dance's fault?
@Djabenusiri ya know good point. Im not at all a dancer myself but your point is clear in this demonstration. its like a bodhran present... and a good one at that. :D
It is still a hornpipe though. Set dances are just tunes that have a "set" or specific dance that goes with them. An example is The King of The Faeries. It's a set dance, but the tune itself is a hornpipe.
it's a hornpipe timed set dance, so technically you can dance a hornpipe to the step (the part before the set). Same goes for treble jig timed sets like St.Patrick's day, you can dance a treble jig step to the "step" part of the song.
I love the precision this male dancer has. His rhythem is PERFECT and his cuts and trebles are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I can only dream about dancing as beautifully as this lad. The best I've seen in a very long time. Thanks for posting this.
Wow I really love this. Irish dance, today, has literally just turned into a bunch of glitz and glam. I wish it was still more like this. The beats are lovely and fit perfectly with the music. you don't need a bunch of fancy crap to make it look amazing.
Wow. If only my hornpipe was as precise and perfectly timed as this...Hah. That was amazing, and the poor stage looked like it was going to collapse in!
WOW LOVE IT! traditional irish dance can't beat the flow of the sound! I sooo miss doing traditional style it makes sense.... yes the non-traditional way we do it now is quite the challenge but so much harder to hear how it fit's in the music. GO Irish Lad can't wait to see ya dance this step!
If I could ever find the tune, or a decent version of it, I would love to try learning this dance from the clip and post it just for the fun. I really like that dance.
I love the traditional-style hornpipe. Irish stepdancing has changed so much over the years that it has lost some of its authenticity. I hope one day it will return to what it once was.
Ha your a classic. Where in the name of all thats are you producing these videos from? Im not a homen away fan so I think the whole object of this type of communicating is being lost. You, my new hero are my new hero.
Great post. None of your fibreglass tips on your shoes in those days.... Just pure leather tip with nails driven into it and all the weight to go with it!
It's so great to be able to watch such legends as Dr. John dancing in their heyday! I bet he could still pull out the same hornpipe no problem. :o)
What a great collection of old Irish dance videos, thanks for sharing!

Anybody familiar with Christy Moore's ballad "Lisdoonvarna"..remembers the line
"Miko Russell, Doctor Bill,
Willy Clancy and Noel Hill."
Doctor Bill Loughnane standing on the extreme left was the fiddle player with the the Tulla..great character.

I love this music and this dance. GO IRISH!!!!!

Wonderful......seems like now they focus on how fast you can dance rather than a focused and intricate set of steps..
MissPickletoes 2 years ago
I like how they focused mainly on beats and rhythm back then, not how high in the air you are getting or how extremely crossed your legs are.
Djabenusiri 2 years ago 31
