I think the easiest (and loud if you don't do it the right way) is running nmap -A with an ip address and CIDR range from your whois. That will run a scan for you and then give you information. for example: nmap -A -T paranoid -v -v 192.168.10.12/8 > scan.log. You can get OS detection from using a tool called p0f, you can run it like this: p0f -o p0f.log -A -i eth0 but do some experimenting. The benefit of p0f is you can browse the site and grab info passively. =)
