looks can be deceiving. it is incredibly hard to master flying a wingsuit. it adds a vast range of complications especially at deployment. try making a normal skydive before you make a hasty judgement like that.

Now I've 12 wingsuit flights, which makes me a ... noob. It's not that it's exhausting, it's just hard to keep the right position, to be both firm and dynamic. Cf comments below, wingsuit flying can be tried only AFTER you've gained serious experience in freefly. In France, 150 jumps are enough to start, but definitely the more jumps, the better. I also continue freefly, coz it's ... different, not less rewarding or easier.

what i think is funny, is that every wuffo (non skydiver) looks at a clip like this and say 'thats looks soo much better than normal skydiving'. they just dont quite understand the amount of time, money and energy it takes to be able to get to this point! they should give 'normal' skydiving a go first, you can have more than enough fun doin it :) ive only done just over 170 jumps, and have spent well over $15000 and still dont have enough experience to start wingsuiting

Do a lot of tracking skydives & practice pulling in your track. Wingsuiting isn't as hard as people make it out to be. The main thing is not getting a whole bunch of line twists on deployment.

pssst. Don't tell anyone I told you this but you MAY have enough experience to start wingsuiting. But only if you can find a competent instructor who is willing to take you on your FFC. I just did my first wingsuit jump at 172.

Sry i put "bad comment" by mistake. Just to say youre right. In France, 150 jumps are enough - which doesn't mean you are necessarily ready for it. Ive 175 jumps, 12 wingsuit jumps, but clearly feel the need for more freefly and tracking practice. I did a jump with a buddy, felt like a brick compared to him (both with Phantom suit). Blue sky

That was right after I did it last year. I don't feel the same way anymore. My position has changed. Now I am of the belief that you should wait until 200 jumps (or whatever your country's recommendation is).

Idk if you heard about the guy who died Jan 2, 2009 here in the states. He was doing his 2nd or 3rd wingsuit jump but he only had 130some jumps total (USPA recommends 200). Now I realize I should have just waited because if I made a mistake that could have been me.

Good point: overestimating oneself is the key danger factor in skydiving. This said, it depends of course not only of "how many" jumps, but "what" jumps one has done, the training rythm and process etc. BTW, what happened to that guy?

then youll never try it. wingsuit flying - or base jumping - is an extension or "regular" skydiving. Without a passion for freefly, and at least 150-200 "regular" jumps, forget about anything else.

It's just different. Freefly (I guess its what you call "original" skydiving, although it's something you do only with some experience) gives you more speed, more mobility in the air, more sensations. Wingsuit restricts very much your vertical mobility and freedom, but rewards you with longer jumps, horizontal range, and the great feel you're actually flying. It's just so close, and yet so different.

There were suits like that for cameramen in the 80's. But that design does not optimize lift and glide like the current ram air inflated wings do. If the former design worked better for wingsuits they would be using it now.

Does anybody know the absolute minimum achievable vertical speed, and what the horizontal speed would need to be? By my math, if the wingsuits achieve 3:1 glide, isn't 120 mph (approx 180 feet/sec) also 40 mph verticle speed? Or can a wingsuit for brief instances achieve slower verticle speeds?
