Death photography became popular in Victorian times and remained so into the early 20th century. Parents often posed their children in lifelike positions, sitting on a chair, "sleeping" on a sofa, even standing or sitting with eyes open. It's definitely creepy and macabre by today's standards, but this was during an era when you might not ever have had your picture taken, so it was the family's only chance to get a lasting photo. This was especially true of young children.
My other comment doesn't seem to be showing up... I think you perhaps inadvertently added an image of a dead girl at 1:59. Her unnatural pose and the side by side photo of what looks to be her in life, are common for these types of images.
I love this song for it's deceptive simplicity. To 'turn round right' can take many people a lifetime. I hope I accomplish it. Both Yo-yo & Alison (know) what the lyrics mean and that is wonderfully evident in this interpretation.
"tis the gift to be free" Watching the 911 tribute and Yo Yo Ma's performance brought me here. How sad this day is. I didn't realize how much emotion it was going to still evoke as I have been crying for over an hour. God Bless all those who lost their lives due to this tragic event, all the family and friends that mourn their loved ones everyday, all those who helped rescue, clean up and rebuild the WTC site & all those who protect our country everyday. Life is a gift! Let freedom ring!
Check out the collection by Vicky Cimprich, "Pretty Mothers Home". You will not find a better description of the time and the place through the eyes of a young girl who chooses a life among the people. Vicky lives in N Kentucky and did her research at Pleasant Hill. Her work is amazing and no one who reads it will ever forget it.
@beanscot You are welcome. There are quite a few videos of Jacqueline du Pre playing the cello.Especially the Nupen film of her playing the Elgar Cello Concerto.Enjoy.
If you have a little boy, OR a little girl; the greatest gift you can give them, and yourself, is to appreciate them for who THEY are. I am a father of three, one girl and two boys, and it never mattered to me if I had boys or girls. All children are a gift.
The Sabbathday Lake Shaker community in Maine is the last Shaker community in the world. This song (Simple Gifts) was written by an elder from the nearby Alfred, Maine community. I had the privilege of spending two summers at Sabbathday Lake, working along side the Shakers, taking meals in the common dining room, and worshiping in the 18th century meeting house. People interested in the Shaker way of life are, to my knowledge, still invited to contact the community . They have web site.
All due respect, ladies, but I hope to have a little boy rather than a little girl. A little boy gives us the hard work of turning him into a man, no easy task, but a little girl would just melt my heart too much. To remain composed while giving her away on her wedding day--well, I just can't imagine that as of yet.
@vrazyrokinartist123 I also played this on stage with my banjo, and a man in the front row was crying. When I finished, I asked, "Sir, are you a Shaker"? "No", he replied, "I'm a musician".
@BlingBlingGirlRocks If you think it is beautiful (and I concur wholeheartedly) you don't "have" to sing it, you GET to sing it. I wish I could hear your performance!
The song was largely unknown outside of Shaker communities until it became world famous thanks to its use in Aaron Copland's score for Martha Graham's ballet Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Copland used "Simple Gifts" a second time in 1950 in his first set of Old American Songs for voice and piano, which was later orchestrated.
This is our wedding song. I have never heard it so movingly and - simply - done. I cried all over again. Alison Krauss and YoYo Ma are both captured angels...
Amazing! Your video collection... it's extraordinary how it reflects the song. I have loved this song forever I think...reminds me of Franco Zeffirelli's Brother Sun Sister Moon...If you want your dream to be... Long time fan of Alison. BUT...Yo Yo Ma...Yeah, I had heard him, appreciated him when I heard him, always in peripheral...but now He is forged within me. Thanks much for your artistry in sharing this...means a lot to me!
Oh my God. Only Yo-Yo Ma could make those high notes at 1:15 and 1:18 sing gloriously like that. Almost sounded like a Violin or Viola. Or maybe thats what kind of sound a 277 year old Domenico Montagnana thats worth $2.5M will give you. Absolutley extrordinary/
wonderful.... Some of the pics are very evocative... I especially like the series of three starting at 0:12... ending w the street performer and little girl. can anyone provide any info about the image at 56 seconds? I am a sewing teacher for blind adults and something about the picture makes me think the children are blind. anyone?
A complex, rich Simple Gift. Thank you for the artistry of your video - very much a reminder to enjoy what we have and strive for contentment. Our cars will stop running, our houses fall down but the simple gifts of Love, Friendship & Family forever will live in our hearts.

@slondawg I know, but it was easier to find pictures of violins. : ) Thanks for commenting. Not all stringed instruments are alike, so your point is well taken.
Perfect, Yo Yo Ma, Alison Krauss and Simple Gifts.....does it get any better?
