Edward Woodward was an astonishing actor. Because sometimes, you couldn't tell he was acting, if that makes sense. Utterly convincing in his performances.
The whole series is great. I don't think there is one single episode that is not worth watching. Ed Woodward at some of his best. Russel Hunter as Lonely is just perfect casting. If you want QUALITY here you go.
Couldn't agree with you more. I was looking for The Wicker Man to pay my tribute to this fine actor, while his performance in that film is excellent, I'd like to pay tribute to his entire career on the small screen as well as the big screen. I was too young to catch this iconic British show, but know it's still highly regarded television. Wonderful clip & wonderful actor never to be forgotten.
Back in those days programmes were not milked. Take The Prisoner, it's nearest today might be Lost but lost is a 1 or 2 series story. Now we have it stretched beyong belief and losing credibility with every episode.
Surely the best production values are a great plot, script and actors? This was the prime era of TV with shows like this and Birdy. Dark, gritty and involving while still being exciting. TV is dead and burried because production comes ahead of writing
The info comment say's it all as to why the old tv programs were so good. The production values *were* poor, mostly studio with very little location shots, so they relied on strong scripts and great acting.
this scene alone in callan just proves how brilliant edward woodward is as an actor aswell as his portray of robert mccall in the equalizer which was a excellent role for him

@sharona1981 A good puppeteer never shows the strings, if that makes sense.

@DeafFret Makes perfect sense, and you're absolutely right.

Brilliant stuff. Callan operates in much the same world as James Bond, but it's sure a different side of the street !

What do you mean "dreadful production"? The outside shots were of the highest quality, even by today's standards.

Fabulous actor Ewar Woowar could do anything. This scene shows quiet despair better than anything I have ever seen. RIP Mr Callan

This clip os a fitting tribute to Edward Woodward, who has died aged 79. He'll be sorely missed!

Brilliant TV series and incredible acting and scripting. You call this old, I'd call it classic and sadly missed compared to todays cheap tacky TV.

Well, back then TV was considered as a form of theatre, not a poor relation of the movies. TV now is a complete joke!...apart from the comedies.
