This band is very good. HS bands have changed since I was in school. Our high school had about 1400 students with about 175 in band. We have majorettes and flag corp. Yes, majorettes and flag corp had to try out. Some made it and some did not. Again, this is a very good band and they should be proud.
Im Kinda Upset how Everybdy is having a conversation about copy rights and things of that nature how bout you just leave our school alone! dont watch if you have futher problems!...Anyways Glad to Be Leaveing SouthView this year Woo!!
Oh, I forgot to say. This can not be bought from the corps. The band director and band itself is in violation of copyright law from Nina Rota, the composer and estate by which the Blue Devils had to engage in a very hefty financial contract with, Paramount Pictures, which owns the images which are presented visually, the name, and the text used on all props, and the Blue Devils organization, whose artistic images, musical arrangements, etc. have been stolen from.
There's a thing called Fair Use for Education as well that keeps SV from being in violation. They did not use anything for profit, or allow anyone else to use the music/images. SV did not try to take credit for creating 'The GodFather'.
I don't claim to know everything on copyright, so fault me if I'm wrong, but please refrain from accuses SV on copyright infringement before doing more research.
those 2 below here are supposed to be replies but whatever! lol!!!
this show was okay...better than my senior year which was Carmen. I hated that show lol!! My fave will always be Blues Train!!! That show rocked and we did soooo freakin good at contests with it!!!! I wish someone had a video of that year on here...i think it was 2005-2006. Yeah it was cause 2006-2007 was Carmen...yuk!! lol!!! I miss this band!!!
You may not like that SV buys shows from DCI bands but you have to admit that they tend to turn out better than shows written for/by a high school. I have seen some decent 'custom' shows (most of which were based off of classical music anyways) but for the most part focusing on getting the music and steps down are more important than spending time writing music, and if there's already awesome music written each year by professionals, why not use it?
how can you mention the "greatest NC bands and Drumlines" and not mention South Granville from like 80-05? Come on now, but I actually taught this drumline a lil while during this season and they all were great kids and players!
Btw I'm not bashing on the band, just the director for deliberately copying the show (assuming he didn't get consent, if he did that's a different story but he should have tried to be more original with the show anyways).
Way to be original...there's a difference between doing a Godfather show and doing a crappy copy of the Blue Devil's show. I'm going to be honest and say this show sucks. The playing hurts my ears. I'll give credit to the members for trying though. You can't take a drum corps presentation and give it to a marching band and expect them to play it even a tenth as good, especially one from BD. The show is way too complex and demanding for a high school...that's why its designed for drum corps.
First off, the music is bought directly from Wayne Downey, if you don't know who that is, look it up.
Secondly, the drill is custom written, and the music is arranged by the director.
Thirdly, this band wins alot in the state of NC. This was a performance early in the season.
Of course no hs band will play a DCI show how it should, but the credit is due for the hardwork and effort thats put in. This isnt a wimpy show like most other bands do, the music is hard and the drill is even harder.
Ok then since the music is legally bought, forget half of what I said, but I did give the band credit for trying the show. I guess I was sorta harsh when I said the show sucks, and I apologize, but my main point is that if the band is going to play a Godfather show similar to the BD version, the director should at least try to rearrange the music more originally. Maybe it was early in the season but I'm not gonna lie and say that the high notes were awesome...
Btw Roy, last year(2008-2009), we bought Criminal from the Bluecoats. We got Grand Champion atleast 13 out of 15 contests. The music might be similar but the drill is definately not the same.
just a question? did Bolder bump up the number of contests after 2007 cause when i went there we only did 6 contests a year. one on the last sat of sept. every sat in oct. and the first sat in nov. So if not then what else did yall do to go to 15 contests?
SVHSBaritone is exaggerating a little bit. Mr. Bolder did bump up the number of competitions by one, but they still only go to 7 (8 if you include SV Band day). So, they probably won 5 out 8 or something.
Actually, now it's a show from 2 years ago. We already did Criminal. Now we're working on Knockout. And if you're wondering on who this is, the name's Kyle. French Horn 2 in the Wind Ensemble. And Horn 5 in Marching Band. (The number is the number on the case and the position for the coordinate sheets.)
So sorry to hear that. My band director retired my sophomore year, but returned my senior year. Maybe yours will do the same. I love to see your band perform. Awesome! This has to be one of your best shows yet!
this is good ... but wtf is going on wit NC bands.?? I mean Southivew and Douglas Byrd was the 2 dominant core style bands back in 1999-2005 . E.E. Smith and Dudley High was the baddest show style bands. and southeast Raleigh was in the mix wit Byrd. But it seems that the kids now a days dont care no more.. I understand Byrd lost its director but still. these 5 bands werent no joke. there are other good bands in NC but these 5 would take superiors and grand champs all year long every year.
the programs starting in the middle schools are deteriorating. teachers are losing the magic they used to have. mr bolder isnt the same he was 4yrs ago when i was a freshman. times change.
Do you honestly thing that Cape Fear , Clayton and SMithfield can compare to the likes of SOuthview & Douglas Byrd ?? MAybe now cause neither program is the same. Byrds director is gone. ANd SV director just acting to nice. But lets be real they wouldnt stand a chance pre 2006. Im not saying those prorgrams arent good. They just arent good enuff.
I understand where you are coming from....By the way, I forgot to mention one other superior band....Cary High School...Not really sure how they are now, but they too used to be top of the line...
I think Altosaxmachine needs to take trips outside of Cumberland County more often. Cape Fear under Mr. Williams has grown amazing. Clayton and SSS good programs too. And Cary still is top of the line along with Green Hope, West Johnston, Croatan, West Carteret. South View was never the best band in the state by far. It was a good band. And Scotland during James Cook was a great band. Byrd under Dumas wasn't much.
thats true. But if you know NC bands then you would know Douglas Byrd (southview biggest rivals) Has been playing the exact Blue Devils shows for years. A instructor from the The blue devils actually sends them the music. But that was during the 2000-2005 seasons. to be honest BOTH Southview and Douglas Byrd was the two best core style bands in NC but they both have went downhill especially byrd since Mr dumas left. This is not the Southview i remember, not bad but its not the old southview

galenct: No, they are not in copyright violation. Here's your lesson:
A composer know longer has ownership over their music once it is published. The publisher does.
Whomever the publisher grants permission to buy the music they own is their choice.
Anyone can ARRANGE a piece of music they buy for themselves, and sell that ARRANGEMENT.
The SV band director buys the DCI ARRANGEMENT and REARRANGES that music for the SV band personally.
So, no one is in copyright violation.

South View's best show was 2000-2001 Carpe Noctern (Jesus Christ Superstar) I think that was their best year too.

It was one of my favorites too, but Primal Rhythms (2001-2002) was probably the most successful because it won 2nd Place at Chapel Hill.

i know the DM who goes 2 Southview personally.
and he said that even though they may buy the shows from Wayne Downey or whoever, they take it and re-write EVERYTHING.
pretty much, its like they "dumb-it down" for their level. not bashing their band, cuz i LOVE SV. We go 2 their Band Day every year.
