  • I can remember sitting on the Osborn's screened in porch listening to the entire album AJA over and over again. Dang, those were the days!! I still know every word to every song on that album. Thanks for posting!!!!!!!

  • @50lovey I didn't know OZZY was a Dan Fan!! LOL!

  • Awesome, not to sound like an old crusty guy but they don't make them like this anymore

    J

  • i don't understand how people can't like this

  • What a groove ! Sensational . One of the great bands of all time.

  • aaaaahhhhhh! the sweet sounds of yesteryear...enjoy!

  • Bebop Daddy..mm RIP Mr. Bumpus..and NO the piano player is superb

  • IN STEELY DAN WE TRUST.

  • all I know is that I just love Steely Dan,man in scholl i was an out sider....this helped to make it all real.

  • great song and the back up singers are fantastic the only thing that needs tweaking is your ears brother, this guys are the best, One of a kind, nowhere will yoiu find this kind of classic sound,

  • @peelumba Agree 100%! Guess there's just no pleasing some people.

  • @peelumba check mark that

  • Recently i heard an early demo of this, only df singing an playing the simple chords on the piano. Its amazing what song develops from this.

  • 3:42 MF Doom - Gas Drawls

  • Smooth song.

  • this IS cool !

  • Can't they find better backup singers? Seems they could do better. Great song, great performance just needs a little tweaking.

  • Awesome

  • who is the piano guy? pure genious.

  • @maryfay53 That is Ted Baker. Beautiful player :)

  • just has good, no better then studio version. I remember going to the corner

"record store" paying $7.00 for this spectacular LP.....where does the time go?

  • I have an urge to get some Kahlua and make myself a black cow.

  • One of my favorite from the Aja album. This music never gets old because they always add some new phrasing or solo. True musicians. I really hate so much of the dumbed down crap that is called music today. You don't have to be talented to be popular.

  • I bow my head to Bumpas once again.

  • somebody stole all my steely dan records.Havent seen them for so many years

  • @Greektome1 They still make 'em. Don't deny yourself the Dan.

  • I just wish Fagen was playing the main keys here. He did back then. I guess he is taking it easy a bit , but I really like his keyboard playing.

  • ok he may not be a young stud but he has some sexy as lips.. and a very sexual appealing vibe to him watching him sing and the sound of his voice smooth as glass.. yeah

  • Aja maybe the best album ever made.

  • 'So Outrageous!' I'm in love with the middle back up singer.

  • Awesome. Slows down tho..

    no offense..just saying.

    thanks for posting

  • The BEST jazz group ever on this planet! Their music NEVER gets old!

  • Just got home from their show in Louisville, thought i'd check out a couple of songs they didn't play. This is my fave. Anyway, just noticed the glasses change. I'm buzzin'. If anyone cares, I met Ted Nugent's band in line. In town to play the fair. Continue......

  • Was that Penn or Teller on keys? lol

  • probably my fave steely dan song...

  • Bumpas makes me cry!!!!!!!

  • Wow! That sax tone that Cornileous Bumpas has so warm ..cut deep to the soul!

  • Amazing - love Jon Herrington's guitar work and Keith Carlock's drumming. I see Keith play with Tom Hemby here in Nashville from time to time. Tom, besides being a studio legend, of course plays with the incredible 12 Against Nature steely dan tribute band. GREAT STUFF! Nice rhodes solo too - reminds of great Brazilian music I love.

  • i will defend steely dan till beyond my living years

    any faults are incidental

    they are the best

  • brilliant

  • He 1 cool mutha, i mean like far out

  • 0:39 "You were very high"

    0:42 "YOUUUU WERE HIGH"

  • dissapointed they didn't play this in Tulsa, but you are correct Donald is one of the coolest guys around and his voice is amazing. No studio band here!!!!!!!!!

  • NIce to see/hear Corny B. (R.I.P.) blowin' there... Caught him with Doobs earlier before Mark Russo.

Easy flowing then sometimes hard driving soul.

The Dan's show at Chicago Theater couple years ago (Royal Scam night) was the best concert I've seen in all my years o' playin n' concert goin...

  • I guess it takes a huge mouth to get all that cool sound out.

  • This was my theme song in 1979..she finally got out for good!

  • Yea this song is Sandra. What a great and unique band!! Nobody can write and play good music like Steely Dan!!! oh my!! Miss Brutus!!!

  • What an awesome version of an awesome song. Steely Dan will always be one of my favorite bands!!

  • Their live sound could turn goat piss into gasoline. Long live the Dan.

  • makes me want to drink my big black cow - lordy what a band. Ted Baker is a fabulous jazz pianist!

  • The 'Dan' can do no wrong. . .Sooo Kool,

Music that does not age...just gets better

  • Thank you Don and Walt, for everything.

  • Awesome !!!

  • It's the sound they have, Nice and smooth

  • Never saw Fagan live. I couldn't take my eyes off him, and I'm straight. His voice matches his looks...unusual, quirky, and uniquely beautiful. He actually walks the earth. Wow!

  • @avengerspeel It's Ok to man crush but really! Donald Fagen? I could understand man crushing on Bob Weir or John Mayer but Donald Fagen. No accounting for taste

  • @vpaczkowski I'm 100% straight. I just want to meet him. Nothing heavy. Just dinner, a bottle of wine, a song, light cuddling in the moonlight and my best foot massage. Nothing gay.

  • about as cool as it gets

  • Keith Carlock is sub-dividing the rhythm like crazy...great musicians do this! Michael's face at 4:40 says it all...fun!!!

  • If music was making love this would indeed be the ultimate simultaneous orgasm

  • I would like to say I´m out of cool or other mannerisms, but this tune brings out the best of cool.

  • Let me be objective here: Don Fagen is a totally cool, jazzy dude who plays/sings/writes great, incredible music. And he also kinda looks like a Muppet. A really cool Muppet. It's just when he opens his mouth so wide, I feel like there's a hand on the inside controlling it. Despite that, however, he still remains one of the coolest dudes alive.

  • @DelRockford If that's true then it's also true that Walter Becker is an 8th grade math teacher during the week.

  • @DelRockford He and Walt have a box at the Fox right next to S&W's, as it turns out, when I was at the Fox on the 16th I learned two things, 1. only cool people can see the boxes, and 2. they simultaneously where play on the stage and watching from the box.

  • @DelRockford

He was playing a keytar in 2003. King of cool.

  • @DelRockford Hilarious! So true

  • @DelRockford Wouldn't be so great if Donald was cool,,

  • @DelRockford they call him the vampire for a reason bro!

  • sheer class,so wicked with the sisters n all doin their out of sync jigs, brill.so tight live, the sign of great talent and rather large egos with fagen u have to say.its kind of what makes it....so out rageous.

  • Big Black Cow and Peg are the best Steely Dan songs in my opinion!

  • BUMPAS!!!!!!!!!

  • I finally know what chords they're playing in the Rhodes solo. No tab on the net had it right. Close but no close enough.

  • This is a great live performance. The phrasing and time are delicious.

  • Admiralcraighill says & knows SOBRIETY is the way to go. That's what Donald was saying in this tune. Beak away, just when it seems so clear that's over now :

Drink ur big black cow and get out of here!

  • nice---sweet------pine knob --I grew up near there---had the best times there!!!

  • Please come to Phoenix!!!!!!,,,I'm begging ya!,,,,lol.

  • what a funky beat. Thanks guys

  • One of the few artists I know who never actually made a bad album. Ever. Show me a Steely Dan fail. If you can .... you're not listening.

  • @SaechaoStallone

    Gaucho sucked, as did Nightfly.

Walter Becker's solo disc WEEZER sucked big time, too. I think the talent resides in Fagen.

  • @Toddskins1 Hold on, you REALLY think that Gaucho and Nightfly sucked?? Haha! You're obviously a cloth-eared idiot. There's not one bad track on either album. Furthermore, I think its worth mentioning that Becker's "11 Tracks of Whack" is pretty cool

  • @me1onhead Gaucho and The Nightfly are amazing LP.s

  • anyone else notice the change in donald's glasses? xD

  • @kell1reilly2

    lol

  • @kell1reilly2

yeah...I thought I bumped my head whilst tree climbing.

  • @kell1reilly2 hard to site read in Ray Ban's

  • @kell1reilly2 Like a boss!

  • This song always makes me feel happy and that everythings gonna be ok...Nice :)

  • @lennyola7

This is not available commercially. It moves through the Steely Dan community of fans though. So, if you get dedicated to the cause, you will find it.

  • Donald Fagen on keytar, but they didn't show him playing on it much... :-(

  • @macsnafu they never do

  • The back up singer in the center is Carolyn Leonhart an excellent jazz singer in her own right. Her voice is amazing, check her out in her website.

  • so much better than that rap song that stole this lick

  • I dream of singing back up with the ladies. Killer harmony. This song is the coolest. Thanks for posting Carlos!

  • Fagen finally took off the sunglasses....great video!

  • RIP Mr. Cornelius Bumpas, what a sax artist.

  • Pure fineness!

  • Steely is amazing. Keith is a amazing groover too

  • cornelius rip!

  • these cats rule.im 50 ,been listening a long time.living legends.i have never seen them in concert but would love to before i die.its on my bucket list!

  • Steely Dan does RULE!!! I used to hear some real funky groovy rock-jazz songs on the pop radio stations when I was like 7 or 8 years old and never really new that it was all the band "Steely Dan". That voice and that groove really caught me as a young kid! But for some reason I didnt know it was the same group(all these groovy songs I was hearing). One day I had recorded songs on tape my Dad heard some and told me who it was. Since then I have been a Dan freak.

    I thought Id share that....

  • who is the the white girl back up singer she is hot i would like to take her to the diner for pancakes and a tall black cow......

  • Great stuff. Nothing beats the Dan

  • They were my favorite in the 70s and they still are. These guys are serious musicians.

  • Fagen is one weird lookin' dude. Then again, his music is equally odd. These guys are just too good for their own selves... It's all too cool to see real musicians at work, not a bunch of 'posturing' Ken/Barbie's simply strutting their stuff - which ain't much... Steely Dan rules !!!

  • Reminds me of being 16 in the summer of '97 roofing my grandpa's house. I brought my cd player boombox and blasted Aja on repeat, my most listenable album.

  • I hate to resort to categorizing the Dan, but would you consider them Jazz rocker specialists and much more. That genre jazz rock is the only way I can explain this kind of music to non-adherents of great, well-crafted music. Today's equivalent would be math rock or math core like minus the bear. so all in all yeah this post is a question to the fellow fandom.

  • What a great line..."Take your big Black Cow and get outta here!" NICE!

  • There's just nothing like cruising up Highway 1, California coast, with the top

    down, and

these guys playing their magic all the way..... Pure Heaven!

  • The Great Steely Dan. Baddest Band in the Lan.

  • Cornelius Bumpus is the man...love his solo on this

  • Is it true? That Chevy Chase attended Collage with the gang, and was "the considered the drummer?"

  • whenever i need to be releived of all the bs of the day and all the political crap, I check my boyeeezzzzz So OUTRAGEous

  • I love Steely Dan he looks like a Fraggle

  • @ShuhekuL

I love when people call Donald Fagen "Steely Dan" Just like that Lynard Skynard guy. He was great. Oh yeah, don't forget about Pink Floyd. That guy was awesome. ( I so wish there was a sarcasm font.)

  • @6910835 and don't forget Jethro Tull , he rocks too!

  • Thank you for posting. I am enjoying everything from this performance. This gets even better as I get mire seasoned myself.

  • Excellent song, way back then

  • I am a 47 year old black guy... Good music transcends all bounaries, real, imaginary or contrived...

  • There are only two types...what I like and what I don't like...this I like

  • Takes me back to my youth, sitting in my room with headphones on and chilling a buzz listening to these guys... )

  • My top 5

    Beatles

    Stones

    Zep

    Steeley Dan

    Pink Floyd

  • @whatsupsport AMEN BROTHER... / sister (LOL!)

  • @whatsupsport my top 4 ever the beatles

    pink floyd steely dan

    the byrds

  • Never achieved the commercial success they deserved? Are you kidding? Do you know how many gold albums they have had over the span of 30+ years? They lack the draw of a big concert production true, but they have been selling lots of albums to a lot of acclaim for a lot of years.

  • @kuorva Plus, they took 20 years off when they were pretty much at the height of their popularity. They did nada for 1980-2000, then returned with "Two Against Nature" in 2000.

  • What Do They Want! Oh Yeah! If I Were The Kingdom of I Am Music LIVE!..Fox.Rock'sCzar

  • S D rules ! - RIP ! C B !

  • Cornelius Bumpus's tenor sax solo is so poetic here, so packed with tasty morsels of melody, it makes me cry. He is my favorite soloist with Steely Dan because he always says more with fewer notes. Absolutely love his stuff. Thanks to Fagan and Becker for recognizing his talent.

  • @tealemat

    RIP Cornelius...

  • When this song was out, I was living in Lexington, Ky. They had an Fm station that played alot of stuff that was popular with the college crowd and Steely Dan was often on the radio. Now I live in an area that just plays pre-programmed music.

I'm so thankful for Youtube and these videos! I just wish I could see them live someday.

  • SD is too sophisticated for the mass market IMHO

  • YES!!!!!!!!!

  • Magnificient solo, Cornelius....sure miss you Brother...a true artist...

  • @throe68 I like this comment to the power of infinity...

  • Is Steely Dan the guy with glasses and the keytar who is singing? xD

  • @SmithsonJackson No thats Donald Fagen. Steely Dan is the name of the band.

  • @silversurferis Thanks for clearing that up, he is one of the greatest song writers

  • you simply cannot beat live music, one of my fav. SD jams they really blended several forms of genres very well great band

  • fab just fab were so lucky we are here at this time in time to hear and see

    future legends

  • You were very high....

  • arguably my favorite Dan song, certain my favorite lyric. "surely one will screen out the sorrow/but where are you tomorrow?." Wow. Wish I'd written that. I've seen this clip many times but never before noticed Fagen's clip-on book lite over his lyric notebook on the music stand. Also..at the beginning he's wearing shades, then later back to regular glasses!

  • uptown baby! uptown baby!

  • This song has reached the ultimate chillness level

  • Fagen has "stage fright". That´s why he holds this instrument (so outrageous...) during the song - IT MAKES HIM FEEL SO MUCH CONFORTABLE I love him. He is the best pop composer ever (along wtth Wakter Becker).

They owe the charmer under me!!!

  • Thanks for share us!.A long gratefull momment...

  • Steely Dan was a commercial success- considering the jazz overtones of their music (not rock mainstream) they did very well- they were not the Stones or others in terms of album sales- BUT there is no doubt they were as talented as any American band of the seventies....

  • Along with Jagger/Richards, McCartney/Lennon, John/Taupin one of the greatest partnerships of all time. I grew up with SD but sadly never saw them live. Maybe one day....

  • @rijamor

Don't give up hope. I finally saw them last year after 30 years of wanting to. It was so worth the wait, they are unbelievable live.

  • eternally awesome

  • Bumpus is incredible. I like his playing better than in the original album version

  • LIKE BUTTAH!

  • btw, this is a great live performance

  • No need to be gay and romantic about it, these geezers are a very good band.

  • they are not "album rock", they are truly great studio artists, always seeking the perfection in their music, and i think one of the greatest American bands to ever exist

  • One of the greatest of his times with so many memories when I was overseas serving my country, God Bless to those times, Semper Fi!

  • @ltcasanova1 ... played them on the intercom in my motor pool in Iraq....
