As a Chinese Malaysian growing up in Malaysia but educated in Australia and California...I can say that my time there was relatively without "fear of my government" and pretty harmonious with the other 2 races...granted we knew there was always a glass ceiling and we were 2nd class citizens. Mahathir wasn't a tyrant...but he didn't change anything either. He does make a great point about democracy not being for all. American democracy while good...has a LOT of flaws (one e.g. Iraq).
