The ship is resting on blocks. The day before the launch, most blocks are removed. On the day itself, all but a few of the remaining are removed. And right before the launch, a daring man with a sledgehammer goes round to hit out the remaining blocks, causing the ship to slide into the water. Normally the ship will not slide untill all blocks have been removed, but, as you can see, sometimes it happens!
