I kinda feel bad for the band who basically sat and listened to him perform.... i mean, if i were them, id b kinda like, wtf, jst end the solo man, u r reusing ideas anyway, haha.
@mattwookie7777 Keep in mind that this song was composed by Gordon Goodwin as a Eric Marienthal feature. There's a reason nobody else soloed, it's because the song was written for one person to solo, and since Eric was there, they let him do it. Besides I would imagine it would be a honor to sit in with him, anyways.
Ok I have to say... I certainly think Eric Marienthal is a talented cat. He's got madd chops, talented. Other than money, I often wondered why he went so much into the smooth thing. It's a shame, sorry but it definitely is. Seriously, though people STOP comparing Marienthal to John Coltrane, Chris Potter, or Michael Brecker. No one ever should be thought of on the same level as Trane. Please.... Everyone has a right to their opinions, but really. :)
anyone noticed how Eric tried to stop his solo at 6:55 but the guy who cues after solos just refuses to give the cue. By the way, can we stop those stupid youtube fights abou "better". In case anyone missed, this is not Michael (I really enjoy both their music)
@synyster52 He played Gordon Goodwin's Jazz Police back with my High School jazz band, and performed this with the Eau Claire, WI College Jazz Band. Incredible stuff.
@smitty01209 I took two lessons from him. I automatically got 300x better at the saxophone lol. You should try and a lesson with him or two. He's so down to earth and I'm sure he would do it.
he is one of sax heroes,so don't debate about who is the best, Marienthal play different style from brecker, both of them practiced and play great, and i believe that both of them respect each other, sorry my english is not good at all,so if you can't play and not famous like them, just keep quiet and enjoy the video :)
In my opinion hes not considered one of the greats maybe because jazz isnt as popular as when most of the greats were around. If jazz were as popular sure hed be one of the top players probably not the top but one of them. You really cant argue that hes a great player.
@Jedunabe It's a concert F. But if you were transposing for sax then you would be right. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and congratulate you on having a great ear. (I have two of them)
@MysteriousTraveller Yes, if you close your eyes and clear your mind you can feel his spirit channeling through nature and every terrestrial object like an immanent god.
Eric is great.......way better than me....but not the greatest of our time......i guess its what your into.....im more of a jazz guy so i listen to people today like chris potter, josh redman, and Branford Marsalis, most of the the stuff eric does is smooth jazz.....this vid is cool, but not my cup of tea!!!
Apparently, you've never heard of people like Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Eric Alexander, Dick Oatts....the list goes on of people that are better than this guy.....not knocking Eric....he is pretty ridiculous at this style of playing....
I've indeed heard of all of them, and I'm not saying that they aren't great, but Marienthal brings more to the table in terms of style and emotion. And it's not just one style, he can rip over anything.
You really think he brings more in terms of style and emotion!? Reaaaally? I've heard him play straight-ahead and he doesn't really do anything for me. I'm not knocking his ability, but I'm just saying there is tons more out there than he has to offer.....
@Wizado991 Again, I'm not saying that he sucks at this style at all. If you got that impression from what I've written, read again. I'm just saying, there are clearly better sax players out there. If you asked him about it, I'm sure he would tell you the same thing I am. Just do me a solid and check out Michael Brecker or Chris Potter; I beg you.
This guy kicks Michael Brecker's ass?? Michael Brecker is easily the greatest saxophonist of our generation. He did things on the saxophone that I've never even heard anyone do....many things....
I hope you feel stupid and never ever say that someone kicks michael brecker's ass, he did have things I or anyone else has heard in a long time, he was the best of our time, he started being just were coltrane left, and then created a whole new level of craziness so go stick your sax up your ass if you think I'm wrong
@prechadou I WILL think you are wrong until you show me that you are right.. I've never seen him do anything amazing at all. Anyone who knows how to solo over chord changes can do the things he does.
@LHSax27 It's not just the notes he's good at, it's also the feeling he puts behind it, and the great sounds he has. Really great intonation, something almost no amateur sax player has, really great range in the altissimo (ok, I probably can get higher, since my highest note ever is the highest Bb on the piano on alto sax), and his altissimo notes sound really effortless.
Btw, I listened to your sax vid, and that sounds quite horribly played... Not even a tenth percent as good as Eric.
@robbertzzzzz of course I'm not as good as him, lol. I probably never will be. and, you can't even compare me to Eric on that because that was a piece written a long time ago based on Theme and Variation - and I'm guessing you don't even know what Theme and Variation is without google, lol. and, it's actually NOT horribly played at all, thanks. If you want to hear it horribly played, listen to all the other videos on youtube of it being played, lol.
@LHSax27 Your words: "Anyone who knows how to solo over chord changes can do the things he does."
I can play solos over chord changes, and can't do the stuff he can. Ergo, me right you wrong.
Your thing actually IS horribly played. Get a rythmic feeling and listen it again.
And stop making assumptions about me without any proof please, that only proves that you are some kind of loser who can't come up with a good argument.
@robbertzzzzz Dude, it's classical music. and, it's NOT horribly played, lol. You're an idiot. but, I'm done arguing with you on youtube. and, I bet you actually DON'T know what Theme and Variation is, do you? You're probably just some jazz guy. I'm a classical player dude, get off me.
@LHSax27 Why am I the idiot when you are the one saying idiotic things all the time? I know that it is classical music, it would be weird if I didn't know after five years of classical education and four of jazz education. I do know what theme and variation is, and I do know that you did play that piece quite bad. Totally no rythmic feeling, and many notes go wrong, especially the lower ones.
@LHSax27 I love your lack of logic. If you haven't heard of them, then you haven't done your homework. Its as simple as that. If you're ignorant on the matter, then go on youtube and be enlightened.
The work that he does with is mouth when playing is amazing enough, let alone what he does with his fingers! Keep in mind he does this all at the same time. wow!
This video is incredibly awesome, thank you very much for posting such a great performance by Eric. I played with him once, and he always gives his best.
