  • Jangan cakap macam korang nie lebih bagos lah!. Pantat!.

  • Eric is the man! One of my favorite videos of him. Props to the drummer also

  • I kinda feel bad for the band who basically sat and listened to him perform.... i mean, if i were them, id b kinda like, wtf, jst end the solo man, u r reusing ideas anyway, haha.

  • @mattwookie7777 If you'd ever seen Eric Marienthal live, you wouldn't be saying that. The mostly godly soloing I've ever heard came from him.

  • @DjMoneybagzz agree

  • @DjMoneybagzz maybe its different to b a trumpet or trombone player.... but as a sax player who loves to solo, id b pretty pissed.... lol

  • @mattwookie7777 Keep in mind that this song was composed by Gordon Goodwin as a Eric Marienthal feature. There's a reason nobody else soloed, it's because the song was written for one person to solo, and since Eric was there, they let him do it. Besides I would imagine it would be a honor to sit in with him, anyways.

  • one day I'm going to play like that.

  • @jazzduchess ditto

  • lokaso el video que viva eric

  • Ok I have to say... I certainly think Eric Marienthal is a talented cat. He's got madd chops, talented. Other than money, I often wondered why he went so much into the smooth thing. It's a shame, sorry but it definitely is. Seriously, though people STOP comparing Marienthal to John Coltrane, Chris Potter, or Michael Brecker. No one ever should be thought of on the same level as Trane. Please.... Everyone has a right to their opinions, but really. :)

  • @bfleury1 Have you seen eric's videos where he improvises? The man is no joke.

  • This man has the respiratory tract of a T-Rex O______O

  • Ok seriously who disliked?

  • @supermegafifi he/she was def.

  • Monster.....

  • anyone noticed how Eric tried to stop his solo at 6:55 but the guy who cues after solos just refuses to give the cue. By the way, can we stop those stupid youtube fights abou "better". In case anyone missed, this is not Michael (I really enjoy both their music)

  • That was sick! So often those types od

  • One of Eric's students was Kieth Jacobson, who is my private lessons teacher :)

  • Like the guy below me said...time to change my pants. SWEET JESUS THAT WAS GODLY!!!

  • Time to change my pants....

  • Well, I've either got to practice my horn or sell it . . .

  • which is the title of this song??? thanks!

  • @Colo92BS Play that funky music

This version is from Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

  • @robbertzzzzz Thank you very much!!!

  • There'd better not be anyone who ever dislikes this video

  • Haha I love the guy at the end. EWIC MAWIENTHAUL! lol

  • Esse cara toca de mais

  • I shook this man's hand. I automatically got 30x better at the saxophone.

  • @smitty01209

same exact thing happened to me :D and i got his autograph ;)

  • @synyster52 He played Gordon Goodwin's Jazz Police back with my High School jazz band, and performed this with the Eau Claire, WI College Jazz Band. Incredible stuff.

  • @smitty01209 I took two lessons from him. I automatically got 300x better at the saxophone lol. You should try and a lesson with him or two. He's so down to earth and I'm sure he would do it.

  • man can he wail!!

  • Eric está colosal.

  • Ok just gonna say one thing...... this is to much xD

how is that i never heard of this guy?

  • might be in love. that altissimo is godly.

  • marienthal is so good that he is comparible to john coltrane!

  • And I thought Marc Russo was good...=/

  • he is one of sax heroes,so don't debate about who is the best, Marienthal play different style from brecker, both of them practiced and play great, and i believe that both of them respect each other, sorry my english is not good at all,so if you can't play and not famous like them, just keep quiet and enjoy the video :)

  • Omg 2:07 what a swing...

I wish I could blow like that.

    5/5

  • dear lord, one of the best today.

  • this dude is a beast

as a sax player myself i am hypnotized if i could get one day to learn from him i would ask if ti was a dream

  • He's based in LA, charges 100 bucks an hour for lessons

  • In my opinion hes not considered one of the greats maybe because jazz isnt as popular as when most of the greats were around. If jazz were as popular sure hed be one of the top players probably not the top but one of them. You really cant argue that hes a great player.

  • mmm...

  • Good grief! 2:42 is godly! a gliss up to, I think, a high d(?) Either way, holy crap!

  • anyone else hear a heap of sanborn in his solo?

  • @brycejazz Sanborn is everywhere

  • @MysteriousTraveller Yes, if you close your eyes and clear your mind you can feel his spirit channeling through nature and every terrestrial object like an immanent god.

  • what good contemporary alto player doesnt have some sanborn in his playing?

  • let me know original this song

    thanks

  • different!!!

  • es lo máximo.viva Eric Marienthal!!!!

  • It's great to hear ol' "Scoops" again.

You always know it's going to be a hell of a night when he's there.

  • Great video!

  • What is the technique he uses to play that note at 1:09? I think it's a high F# but it doesn't sound like a regular note. has more of a growl to it.

  • it's an altissimo g w/ the multiphonics fingers i think

  • He's splitting the tone by kinda over-supporting the heart of the reed. It's kinda hard to explain. Just try different things.

  • Eric's a great player, but I really hate his staccato in this one.

  • I think its unique and awesome. kinda like a BOOTS RANDOLPH style!

  • Eric ES TREMENDA LA ONDA QUE TENES PARA TOCAR...BESTIA!!! Gracias por el buen momento que me regalaron...toda la banda...gracias.

  • i heard about the other great sax player but he is different..im playing trumpet and im still improving..

  • this is the best sax player i ever known...!!wow...,,,so amazing..

  • you've obviously never listened to the greats....coltrane, brubeck, parker, coltrane, etc.

but marienthal IS possibly the best of our time, along with Vadala.

  • Eric is great.......way better than me....but not the greatest of our time......i guess its what your into.....im more of a jazz guy so i listen to people today like chris potter, josh redman, and Branford Marsalis, most of the the stuff eric does is smooth jazz.....this vid is cool, but not my cup of tea!!!

  • Apparently, you've never heard of people like Michael Brecker, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Eric Alexander, Dick Oatts....the list goes on of people that are better than this guy.....not knocking Eric....he is pretty ridiculous at this style of playing....

  • I've indeed heard of all of them, and I'm not saying that they aren't great, but Marienthal brings more to the table in terms of style and emotion. And it's not just one style, he can rip over anything.

  • You really think he brings more in terms of style and emotion!? Reaaaally? I've heard him play straight-ahead and he doesn't really do anything for me. I'm not knocking his ability, but I'm just saying there is tons more out there than he has to offer.....

  • If you cant tell that marienthal really likes playing Jazz/rock fusion then your crazy. Thats why he sounds so amazing.

  • @Wizado991 Again, I'm not saying that he sucks at this style at all. If you got that impression from what I've written, read again. I'm just saying, there are clearly better sax players out there. If you asked him about it, I'm sure he would tell you the same thing I am. Just do me a solid and check out Michael Brecker or Chris Potter; I beg you.

  • @saxev2005 This guy kicks Michael Brecker's ass. I've never even HEARD of Chris Potter, lol.

  • Hahaha....then you clearly don't have all the facts....go study up before you bring your knife to a gun fight again......

  • This guy kicks Michael Brecker's ass?? Michael Brecker is easily the greatest saxophonist of our generation. He did things on the saxophone that I've never even heard anyone do....many things....

  • I hope you feel stupid and never ever say that someone kicks michael brecker's ass, he did have things I or anyone else has heard in a long time, he was the best of our time, he started being just were coltrane left, and then created a whole new level of craziness so go stick your sax up your ass if you think I'm wrong

  • @prechadou I WILL think you are wrong until you show me that you are right.. I've never seen him do anything amazing at all. Anyone who knows how to solo over chord changes can do the things he does.

  • @LHSax27 It's not just the notes he's good at, it's also the feeling he puts behind it, and the great sounds he has. Really great intonation, something almost no amateur sax player has, really great range in the altissimo (ok, I probably can get higher, since my highest note ever is the highest Bb on the piano on alto sax), and his altissimo notes sound really effortless.

Btw, I listened to your sax vid, and that sounds quite horribly played... Not even a tenth percent as good as Eric.

  • @robbertzzzzz of course I'm not as good as him, lol. I probably never will be. and, you can't even compare me to Eric on that because that was a piece written a long time ago based on Theme and Variation - and I'm guessing you don't even know what Theme and Variation is without google, lol. and, it's actually NOT horribly played at all, thanks. If you want to hear it horribly played, listen to all the other videos on youtube of it being played, lol.

  • @LHSax27 Your words: "Anyone who knows how to solo over chord changes can do the things he does."

I can play solos over chord changes, and can't do the stuff he can. Ergo, me right you wrong.

Your thing actually IS horribly played. Get a rythmic feeling and listen it again.

And stop making assumptions about me without any proof please, that only proves that you are some kind of loser who can't come up with a good argument.

  • @robbertzzzzz Dude, it's classical music. and, it's NOT horribly played, lol. You're an idiot. but, I'm done arguing with you on youtube. and, I bet you actually DON'T know what Theme and Variation is, do you? You're probably just some jazz guy. I'm a classical player dude, get off me.

  • @LHSax27 Why am I the idiot when you are the one saying idiotic things all the time? I know that it is classical music, it would be weird if I didn't know after five years of classical education and four of jazz education. I do know what theme and variation is, and I do know that you did play that piece quite bad. Totally no rythmic feeling, and many notes go wrong, especially the lower ones.

  • @LHSax27 WOW!! Marienthal is good, but better than Brecker?! Not a chance...lay off whatever it is you are smoking..

  • @saxev2005 If he's as good as you say he is, I would know who he is.

  • @LHSax27 I love your lack of logic. If you haven't heard of them, then you haven't done your homework. Its as simple as that. If you're ignorant on the matter, then go on youtube and be enlightened.

  • @saxev2005 So, just because I don't know who Chris Potter is, it automatically means that I don't know what I'm talking about, right? No, wrong.

  • @saxev2005 I don't see whatever it is that you see. Show me where you say he does things that you've never seen anyone else do, or whatever.

  • @LHSax27 It all makes sense now.....you're in marching band hahahaha

  • @saxev2005 I WAS in marching band. My youtube page is completely out-of-date, if that's what you read. I'm in college now.

  • @LHSax27 Well, still.....don't argue without knowing what you're talking about...

  • @LHSax27 You really think that there aren't AMAZING sax players you've never heard of?! conceited much?

  • fala sério ....toca de mais . Chegar nesse nivel deve ser muito prazeroso .

  • é por isso que eu não para de adimirar e tocar esse instrumento!!! Eric... thanks!!!

  • Eric is Amazing!

  • my favorite sax player ever. simply amazing, eric marienthal. i cant get enough of his playin. brings a smile to my face every time.

  • They had to have paid him ALOT for him to even consider playing in this configuration.

  • Q gran presentacion para mi Eric Marienthal es un paso a seguir........

  • молодцы япоши)))

  • The work that he does with is mouth when playing is amazing enough, let alone what he does with his fingers! Keep in mind he does this all at the same time. wow!

  • Em 2.44 a japonesinha ao lado de Eric nao aguenta o glissando kkkkkkkkkk...ela põe a mão no ouvido...é muita pressão!

Eric voce é show de bola!!!

  • I didn't even know it was possible to play that long over one chord and keep it interesting.

  • wow!

  • This video is incredibly awesome, thank you very much for posting such a great performance by Eric. I played with him once, and he always gives his best.

  • I love how the girl playing tenor beside him really gets into the groove when he is really going!!

  • I think that to wail like Eric you must have asolutely no inhibitions and have to know where you are going and, of course, be able to play your horn.

    AWESOME!!!
