We, in this country idealize lack of compassion. The best we can hope for is to be able to have compassion for one another. Mother Pitt is represents a monstrous mentality.
Nobody is all black or white in their soul. This series show it perfectly. In some situation the bad people get good and the good get nasty. Its all human.
I love Mother Pitt, yes, very Mormon, the best of Mormon. And yes, my skeptical Queer brothers and sisters, there are plenty of good and wonderful Mormons. I've had LDS neighbours love and give out of genuine, unalloyed kindness, while holier-than-thou liberal friends turned away out of willful neglect and selfishness.
Love is unruly, a liquid like the plasma orgasmata, like the Holy Spirit; it knows no doctrinal bounds, no liberal nor conservative.
@bukovoima "Writers" ? This is, about 98 percent, straight from Tony Kushner's play by the same title. Tony Kushner. Look up his stuff, though, this is pretty much the best. Angels in America is credited as being the second best play in American Lit., after Death of a Salesman by Aurthur Miller.
@WebsterAnn I know Tony Kushner, and I know this is from his pencil, but not all series are made/based on a book by an actual author. Hence, "writers".
@bukovoima it would never get past development! it's unreality shows. cheap to make. rake in the ratings. sensational and easy to script. don't have to pay for known actresses, actors, writers, wardrobe, locations. TV is just not about stuff like this anymore. get ready for more jersey shore and bristol palin dancing with the stars. you have no choice but to accept that these types of productions are past-tense for the people who own media and churn out the shows on air.
Meryl Streep really does a fantastic job playing this roll. And I as also have known countless Mormons just like her..........Shes multi-talented even as Ethel Rosenberg.
It certainly is not polite to call other people's beliefs proposterous.

The way Meryl Streep eats that mint or whatever is my favorite part of the scene. Such a small gesture, but completely encapsulates her character.

@suzie2z Watch it as a man and you might feel that it's agonizing to watch as a man, too.

These two deserve each other at the end.
One who preaches about his principles, but leaves his lover when he needs him the most.
The other who poses as the perfect poster boy, but is in fact just a miserable child.
