I made up an exercise where I just kept bending, then doing as many vibrados as I could until the string slipped from my finger. Just keep doing and doing it - it works.
Good vibrado is the key to good blues, which is the key to good rock tone!
Ace had emotion and balls. He didn't have the clean licks of Rhoads or VanHalen. But he had raw energy and emotion that moved you. He inspired so many guitarist it's not funny. So don't let yourself be confused by how technical he was or wasn't. Many other players are cleaner, but some over do it. A thousand notes a second is impressive for about 2 seconds. Vinnie comes to mind, great player, but just couldn't understand music is about emotion not simply speed and clarity.
Nobody in my opinion does vibrato better than the late great Paul Kossof, check out or YouTube Free's 'Walk in my Shadow' - any live version - to see just what I mean.
worst lead player in rock history next to cc deville. really not very good. never was never will be. made a living on flash instead of substance. one good thing is that he is a better guitar player than gene simmons is a bass player. Its sort of like comparing hitler to musilini as the worst dictator.... oh yeah, there is not such thing as wang bar, its a whammy bar....

The vibrato is definitely part of Aces' signature sound.A lot of his solos on the early Kiss albums employ vibratos at different speeds. It should be pointed out that when you apply vibrato with your' finger(as opposed to with a whammy bar)the note will always go sharp unless you actually bend up to next note or bend up and then strike the note,in which case it will go flat and sharp.A lot of players sharp the note too much. That is where skill factors in.
I am absolutely amazed that the great Ace Frehley is a thumb-over-the-front-of-the-fingerboard guy. One would expect his technique to be . . . . well he must be self-taught, but for you beginners, try to keep your left thumb at the center of the back of the neck. It's a pain in the ass early on, but later it will come in handy for more complicated hammer-ons, and your wrists won't get hurt. Also, when you progress to the point of "shredder" with incorrect technique, it's impossible to unlearn.
Some of the comments on string gauge. 10 is the norm for electric. Practice on an acoustic or buy a cheap guitar and put 11's on it with a fairly high action. Then when you go to your main guitar. It'll be like butter.
Ahmm... I'm just a noob at guitar and it's hard for me to bend a string with my index finger in a downward motion, I'm used to doing it upwards. Is that wrong? How do I do it downwards?
@AnnaAnnaYes Sorry I meant I'm gonna change my string gauge to a lighter one. I'm using light string gauge, and I'm thinking of switching to extra light.
ace your lessons are shit...your bending is out of tune, your vibratos are childish and your guitar sounds like shit.....i think you need another lesson from tommy thayer
Ace has always had a fantastic vibrato, but Angus' vibrato is outrageous. Give the solo to Back in Black a really good listen and his vibrato is unreal.
@rafauleciaelcarpio I don't mean that in a bad way. I meant "outrageous" as in "incredible." His vibrato makes me want to play guitar. It's fantastic.
I think I used to have a really fast vibrato when I was first playing guitar and probably even halfway into my 8 years of playing until I saw that Shred Durst video and how he mentioned to slow down the vibrato. Ever since then, I've played a much wider vibrato and I can't even make myself play it any other way. Fast vibrato kinda sounds shitty to me anyway.
When I first heard the solo on Strutter, I remember being BLOWN AWAY at the way he made those few notes bend & sing the way he did. It was so impressive
I like Ace's solo style his solo's were like little songs in themselves and he was a big part of Kiss's sound, however i didnt care for his live solo's with to many effects going off at once. He made up for it with the smoking pick-up. He stayed stuck in his style in the 80's and didnt(couldnt?) shred which i do respect.
@damienbaits The effects started to come into play, because he would keep going forever. His old tech said they started to ad the effects from the mixing board because it would get his attention & he'd look up & they'd let him know to end it. It later developed into part of the show.
I didnt know that thank you...he always seemed to be telling the sound board guys to turn me up with his hand signaling up. I saw Ace on that metal show last night and that nerd billy sheehan was also on and got all the attention, who cares about mr big? I wanted more focus on Ace.
I am not certain who the quote was from, but it was in the book KISSTORY where someone was quoted as saying of the four original members of KISS, Ace was the best musician. I believe it may've been Bill Aucoin...
He's not the most technical player or shred artist in the world, but he is definitely revered as one of the great influential rock guitar legends.
Would love to have one of his signature models. The Epiphones were reasonably priced, but now that they don't make them anymore, prices for them have sky-rocketed.
I don't like his vibrato and why does he say you can't bend up with your index finger? That's just as possible as bending down. At least on the b and e string. check out Tom Hess, his vibrato is pretty perfect i'd say.
@StockOfWood1969 I'm gonna say the same thing as I said to another guy, listen to Marty Friedman of Megadeth. Amazing string bending/releasing and vibrato.
@codebabe .... KISS came first, too many years earlier .... Can't compare Ace, to anyone who came out after 1975 ... thats like comparing BB King, to Van HAlen ... lol ..
@StockOfWood1969 I wasnt talking music...i was talking specifically vibrato. and you can compare anyone's vibrato from any genre in any time. because good vibrato is good vibrato.
@codebabe ... then you still can't compare Ace to anyone, cause his is a GREAT vibrato .... and yes, different genre = different style = maybe some shit doesnt matter, but your "Good" if you can do it fast ... lol .. no m'am .... Ace has one of , if not , the best Vibrato in Music .... just accept it, and dont try to belive a lie :)
This was pointless. "You just do it." Thanks Ace.
Honestly though, I can't blame him for it. This is pretty much the dumbest question to ask a guitarist ever. Literally this video only needs 30 seconds to explain how to move a string up and down repeatedly.
Ace may not be the most technically gifted guitarist but his sound is very distinctive. I think he was the sound of KISS. Not many guitarists are instantly recognizable but Ace is. Great player because of that.
Beausant wrote, "BB has it. Ace does as well. But for my money, nobody ever had the command that Stevie Ray Vaughan did. Especially when he got into that zone and tuned out everything. He took and put Albert King's style and pumped it up on crack. God I wish he was still with us, can't even imagine what he could still be doing.
I'm glad to see that Ace is doing really well these days without having to be with the sell outs anymore (Gene and Paul incase you weren't sure). He and Peter, although they did use substance abuse, they have always insisted on doing rock n roll albums while Gene and Paul sucked money's dick continuously after Destroyer. I would have left KISS too.

i'll have a drink with ace any day, but he's the last person i'd ever take a guitar lesson from. His vibrato technique is the worst i've ever seen. Ace your a cool dude but you play like shit. Sorry to all the ace fans but that's the truth
@jimmyfallon211 damn right, BB kings has an awesome vibrato always in the right tempo and wide range. Also MAB uses precice metal vibrato which is very unique. ray vaughn also has best timing in his phrasing for vibrato what makes it sound dramatically cool
@csrogers87 yeah I love ace! i was just saying BB makes a vibrato look so effortless and easy the way he does it compared to anyone, including ace. Its kinda like his signature maneuver on the guitar. search for it sometime if you haven't seen it. He uses one finger when he does it and shakes his hand haha.
BB has it. Ace does as well. But for my money, nobody ever had the command that Stevie Ray Vaughan did. Especially when he got into that zone and tuned out everything. Man, the guy was something else...
@csrogers87 Its true, even as old as that man is, he is still an angel with a guitar...only man I've ever heard make that mother sing like he was born to it...I saw him in concert and I was bawling by the third song...
It's a stage-name, like "Ace". He got it when playing with Manson, And the guy has played with k.d. lang, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, David Lee Roth among others. He has also written songs for Garbage, Meat Loaf and Avril Lavigne and he recorded a couple of guitar albums in the early 90's. In other words, he may not be that famous, but he sure knows his craft!
Ace does have a nice vibrado and tone - he improved a lot during the 80's and 90's.

high.

@avegailtadiarca Well,you should'nt, because if you're just starting,the heavier gauge

i'll have a drink with ace any day, but he's the last person i'd ever take a guitar lesson from. His vibrato technique is the worst i've ever seen. Ace your a cool dude but you play like shit. Sorry to all the ace fans but that's the truth

i get your point... but what makes him good is hes style is unique only to kiss i guess this is why he got famous...
X2N18 2 years ago 2
thats pretty good but BB king still has the best vibrato in the business tho.
csrogers87 2 years ago 8
@csrogers87 i guess lol havent seen his vibrato lol
jimmyfallon211 2 years ago
@jimmyfallon211 damn right, BB kings has an awesome vibrato always in the right tempo and wide range. Also MAB uses precice metal vibrato which is very unique. ray vaughn also has best timing in his phrasing for vibrato what makes it sound dramatically cool

@csrogers87 yeah I love ace! i was just saying BB makes a vibrato look so effortless and easy the way he does it compared to anyone, including ace. Its kinda like his signature maneuver on the guitar. search for it sometime if you haven't seen it. He uses one finger when he does it and shakes his hand haha.
csrogers87 2 years ago
@csrogers87 Yeah, BB King has by far the best vibrato, altough Yngwie Malmsteen has some sick vibrato too.
Goof995 2 years ago
I agree but what makes Ace´s vibrato sooo cooool is when he hits the harmonic!!!!
vierdiez 2 years ago 2
BB has it. Ace does as well. But for my money, nobody ever had the command that Stevie Ray Vaughan did. Especially when he got into that zone and tuned out everything. Man, the guy was something else...

BB King's a great singer....that's all! I mean c'mon. The man can't play chords.
And he's certainly no Ace Frehley!

@csrogers87 wrong, george lynch has best vibrato in the business...he may not be the best song writer, but vibrato, the best...

@csrogers87 Marty Friedman has the best I've ever seen. King's is amazing though. Clapton and Gilmour are other great ones.

@csrogers87 BB King is a guitar god...and also has about 20 years of guitar playing on Ace.

@csrogers87 Its true, even as old as that man is, he is still an angel with a guitar...only man I've ever heard make that mother sing like he was born to it...I saw him in concert and I was bawling by the third song...

i know hes some guy from marlyn manson and rob zombie hes not even really that famous. what type of name is john 5 lol
jimmyfallon211 2 years ago
It's a stage-name, like "Ace". He got it when playing with Manson, And the guy has played with k.d. lang, Lita Ford, Rob Halford, David Lee Roth among others. He has also written songs for Garbage, Meat Loaf and Avril Lavigne and he recorded a couple of guitar albums in the early 90's. In other words, he may not be that famous, but he sure knows his craft!
