The present moment is the beginning ...effort implies something happening in a future time when all your effort culminates in an event ...in this you miss the present moment awareness and so love cannot arise. This is my understanding.

Actually there is no key here. When helplessness occurs and you surrender, perfect. If not, you might go on craving until you get to some point where all this drops.
It 's all about SEEING that there is nothing you could or should do about your "inner world" at all (!), but to merely see and experience what is going on inside. See how the mind is running after an imaginary future. To invoke the Divine Presence and just ask for help definitely helps to stay with what is there.
