You make a great point on the community being more civil to one another, I for one completely agree with that concept and practice it in all things. I have noticed so many that want to be negative to each other and actually go out of their way in some instances.
Anyone know of a cannery in the eastern Ohio or western PA. I am not have'n any luck finding anything. There is a large population of Amish in the area do they have similar things? Any info that anyone can give would be great. Food, seeds, and primitive tools are all things that I can use for my prepping. If anyone has suggestions for the best price they would be appreciated.
Just want you to know that you and a few others have actually got me to thinking especially the way the economy is going today. I am starting to do the prepping thing as quickly as i can. Luckly i have already got a defense rifle with a couple of thousand rounds. was not for preping more for just fun. I chose the Wasr 10/63 (1965 model) It is a very good platform for me very reliable. Personally, I would encourage you to add lentils. You can add it to rice, and it can virtually replace fresh meat for protein and other nutrition. Lentils are also significantly cheaper than either Oatmeal or Rice. Good stuff.

Great job SouthernPrepper1, have you checked out Hiberniason channel? He does a wonderful job describing tactics in WROL. You should check him out if you havent.
TO ANY PREPPER IN ALBERTA, CANADA: .... Wassup bro? Do you exist haha? I've been trying to find like minded preppers near where I live, drop me a line if you want
@robovicify I hear ya! One of the most disappointing ideas of moving to Toronto Ont is moving away from Alberta's massive, open, sometimes free lands, the country is awesome. Is there places outdoors where you can freely shoot firearms over there too?
@BitFox you gotta be joking LOL ?? here nah man, its god dam liberals remember that if it can be banned either it already is or its gonna be ! shooting fuck now dude, for hunting yhea obviously for random shooting probably not dude. i highly doubt it, stay out west ill come join ya. especially near toronto u'd have to drive so far up north b4 u get to some crownland, a serius 6+ hour drive. there is crownland near Toronto but its not big enough to discahrge firearms. drop me a pm when u get here
I think one man drills can also help when to don't have the chance to train with others.I think training and conditioning your mind and body are just as important as prepping. If you aren't somewhat fit and healthy, all the food, gear and ammo won't save you in a WROL enviroment.
About becoming more mainstream, I was watching the Disney channel with my two children when a show came on that shocked me, in a good way, for once. The mom is storing food and water and other supplies. The kids are like what are you doing? She goes in to explaining being prepared and what not. Talking about setting up go bags and stuff we talk about all the time. It made me smile.
@goat20101 They show you how and you can it yourself. I went for the first time about three weeks ago and had a good experience. They also have the option of 1gal mylar bags instead of cans, which is what I did. It holds a little more and sometimes costs a little less per bag. Keep in mind (at least at the cannery I went to) any bulk bags you open to can, you must can all of it no matter how much/little you buy. The extra goes on a shelf for others to buy. Took me 3hrs with 3 ppl for $200 worth.
@snoprog Both of those things are invaluable. Sprouting is so easy. Another thing would be to learn the techniques of making great soup. You can't go wrong with good bread, good soup, and live sprouts.
I agree that we should all post replies as if we're looking across the table. Just imagine that the guy on the other end can punch you through your monitor or send a water balloon your way...lol
I learn a lot from you guys/gals. I live in city, well more or less about 45 minutes from amsetrdam (europe). In the last 6 years, I have been prepared for what might happen, food storage, clothings, some weaponary, buggoutbags etc. But always learn something more. One can't just be prepared enough when things realy start rolling. Last but not the least WATER! One thing u must in any way be aware from to store as well. It might be very smart thing do so so now.
@Robbi159 U actualy can use anything, from your feet to the hat u wear as some sort of means to defend yourself. And ofcourse there are other more exclusive(?) things when u are more or less creative. I won't go into what else I might have up my sleeves, that would give the surprise away now woulden't it lol
Good thoughts here again. It's one of the main aspects I think about to be in a cenario for whatever 'bad' situation one might be in. The pshycological aspect mus be considert at first. Panic does make people well panic, thus react in diverent way. We know that all to well. Preperation, does need that bit of aspect due to knowledge and experiance one have. Try keep it simple I think at first and add more to the concept in the later.
buy Lentil IF you can find it at a good price. the Roman legion and the gladiators depended on it so it will keep you up even in the most violent of times. more expensive than rice and pasta but it will keep you healthier. eating lots of pasta and rice will produce acids in your blood stream that will clog your blood particles together, resulting in less area to bind up oxygen. this can however be countered with drinking lots of water but that is not really that good for your kidneys..
@scandapoodle The other great thing about lentils is that they cooks so much faster than dried beans and they are my favorite thing to sprout....so delicious.
i hear ya. it's easy to cook and tastes great! + if you do a soup it will keep you full for a long time. my favourite is soup is: fry: Onions with Garlic season with Spice cumin and Coriander, then add water and the red lentils the last few minutes of cooking/boiling, add the spinach and add salt + pepper to your liking. Simple but so good.
i will also look into sprout cooking, sounds like a great idea. thanks :)
correction, should have been: add the spinach in the last few mins of cooking (not the lentils, which usually need to cook/boil longer).
@SP1, sorry about that as i remember army survival training and how i always hated when someone started to talk about food when i knew there was no real food to be eaten for a long time still...
Great job on the vids! We have about 100 pounds of rice, 40 pounds of beans and a bunch of other misc. stuff plus water. My Wife and I both want to learn how to can meats and veggies. That is the next thing on the burner. Guns and ammo stores are just about where I think they should be for us. Keep on keepin on brother!!
told ya you'd want those sprouts! - dried beans and cheap and store well for years, packed with protein - might also make note of how long it takes to prepare these kinds of meals, imagining cooking for many people and probably in shifts -
I have my bare bone survival foods, but mainly I keep a cycling supply of Cambell's and Progresso soups also SPAM that I cycle out. I eat the older cans and then get a newer supply.
I appreciate how your experiment has changed. Your advanced prepping status makes it too easy, so you have reduced your options. I expect you are wanting to find your breaking point (food fatigue). It may require you to only eat the same thing every meal.
Have you ever tried fasting? I've been experimenting with it over the last year to explore my mental and physical abilities when no food is available.
@jokertim777 It just feels like what we do in education, the dumbing down thing. He's worked hard, and paid the price to be prepared. Why cut his options in half, just because most people haven't been as diligent? If it's just a matter of how little he could survive on, he truly could just fast for the next 4 days. Clearly, one can get by on little or nothing. Just look at the 3 boys adrift for 50 days off Fiji. I'd rather him show us how providently he can live because he's prepared.
stayingawake20 would be a great input on a numner of different facets, his channel focuses on "Survival in Surburbia". I think he has also PMed you, so maybe we hear from him and something gets added to the mix. I am enjoying your scenario and looking forward to the next instalments.
I am a relatively new guy (2 years prepping). It takes a while for a sheeple to turn that ship around (shedding dependencies).
Your videos help me with adjusting my mindset and to assess what I have, what I need and whom to talk to. It's a great adventure-- lots more responsibility on my own shoulders and lots more responsibility to take on.
It's also gratifying to see my 12 yr old girl load a Mossey with confidence
You think you're tough for eating beans every day? There's half a million scarecrows in Denver who'd give anything for one mouthful of what you got. They've been under siege for about three months. They live on rats and sawdust bread and sometimes... on each other. At night, the pyres for the dead light up the sky. It's medieval. - Lt. Col. Andrew 'Andy' Tanner (Red Dawn)
You might check out Dehydrate2store. Another very knowledgeable Mormon lady. We use a dehydrator to dry frozen mixed veggies (available all year) and store in small containers matched to our usage. Cheap and useful.
I hate to see you change horses in mid-stream. If you have a year's supply of it on YOUR shelf, you should include it in your diet this week. It doesn't matter what anyone else has. You wanted to know if you could live off what YOU store, not what others have stored. You won't have learned as much as you could have. You still won't know if your stores will satisfy you.
@katzcradul Totally agree! What good is storing a variety if you don't use what you have to satisfy your needs and your appetite. I understand the need to calculate calories and conserve stores, but I think that it is better to have a more solid plan as far as a menu plan instead of just "surviving". I don't think I could live off of oatmeal, apple chips and rice and I know that my children would become depressed very quickly. You must have comfort foods in your storage.
@atticus9799 - of course you could survive on SP1's diet! You just would not be as happy and contented as now. Prepping is about survival, not about expecting everything to continue unchanged. And don't do your kids' thinking for them. In a WROL situation, you, as a parent, can help the kids see it as an adventure. Be their leader and give them chores with real responsibilities. They'll grow up fast and won't have time to be "depressed".
@Myrmecia I appreciate your response, however, do not assume that I have small children. My children are too old to make an adventure out of a SHTF/WROL situation. They are completely knowledgeable of what could happen and they have responsibilities and jobs now. We work as a family team. I suppose my main point is that we should be concentrating on what we can do with everything we have put back, rotating and using what we have stored to give variety. Morale will be important.
@LookingDownThe45 Store dried beans, store plenty of them. Don't trust the off hand advice you receive on these posts. You got a response here that's way off! Compare nutritional value of 1/2 cup of cooked dried beans to 1/2 cup cooked white rice. If I could only have one, I'd take the beans, hands down. You can cut the cooking time by soaking over night, draining, bringing to a boil, covering for 1 hr. and let sit, and then back on fire to finish cooking. Research!
Great video to put into my playlists for others to find you. Everyone needs to start preparing immediately. Everyone can do something; even some "ramennoodle prepping" is acceptable for many scenario's. Do what you can and hope the scenario will allow you to contribute to what others have done. LDS is a great place for long term prep; and you don't get a sermon with every can. =) AND everyone does have something to contribute. True: "lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink".
Have you considered the preparation time to prepare those few items for consumption, (without the aid of running water, and an electric stove top)?
I figure that gathering fuel, and water will be a major task for most people. Might be interesting to integrate the concept in this current experiment.
Good update. Be sure to take whatever time you need to make the videos. Don't rush it. Always remember ..quality over quantity. We'll be here and watching. Best Regards - IPTN
Hey Brother...Great Vids! I am glad sootch led me to your Site.I am fairly new to all of this.I have beeen building a food pantry, some protection.I am in a Urban situation( Bronx NY).I am in a very nice working class neighborhood.I do see a very big problem though when the SHTF.People live from day to day and shop from day to day.Add any kind of Disaster and they look right for the City,State to help them.ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!Well any way love what you are doing.I am here to learn. Thanks
Peanut Butter with a year or more shelf life seems like a reasonable alternative to having meat protein, and it comes already prepped for storage, no canning needed. I guess store it in a cool area.
Try some Ramen noodles / i buy 4 boxes a month (2 beef and 2 chicken) you can mix them with other things then the spice packs that come with them/ I mix Tuna, canned chicken, canned pork, spaghetti sauce w/meat. All your pastas you can do this with. Get some easy melt cheese that does not have to be refrigerated after opening (but i keep in a cooler during the cold days and in a zip lock bag)
"A ton more rice, a ton more oatmeal" We know how carbs are leading to obesity and the list of illnesses like irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes etc. The jerky is a fantastic addition. Jerky is fine by itself (I'm eating my own deer jerky this week). I'd recommend pemmican - it's basically jerky + rendered suet and it lasts indefinitely without refrigeration. You can LIVE on pemmican alone - well, plus water. No obesity or diabetes :-)
** 59 top quality videos in under 100 days - thanks, SP1 **
@Myrmecia I wouldn't look for SP1 to get fat this week eating more rice and oatmeal! He's increasing carbs but he's also eating a good deal of fiber with the oats and apples. IBS shouldn't be an issue. Jerky is o.k. as long as you have plenty of water available....it's high in sodium and tends to make you thirsty. No diabetes with pemmican, but you'd need to get a cardiologist!
@katzcradul - "I wouldn't look for SP1 to get fat this week" - ha ha! Quite so. I was commenting as if he had to live on the stored grains for a year, not a week. As I wrote on his earlier diet video, for a number of reasons, you need to be on a diet for 8-10 weeks before you will learn anything of reasonable certainty. Incidentally, jerky need not be high in sodium if you make it the simple way without any salt or other additives.
Good points all. You mentioned multi-vitamins, I have been thinking about this for a while. what kind of shelf life are we looking at with those and would it make sense to add them to your food preps?
As for the Battle Drills, I recognize the fundamentals from what was done during the British Army during the Cold War. I know things have changed somewhat since then, at least in part because the weapons involved are different. (Back in the 70/s80s the British Infantry Section had a gun group with a 7.62x51 GPMG vs a rifle group with semi-auto 7.62x51, this is not the case today.) But, at its heart, the fundamentals are similar enough to make to no real odds, as you say.
....it is said that hindsight is 20/20....of all the times i typed a response to a youtuber that was, shall we say, less than favorable or in reality more inflammatory & rude, i wish i had deleted them like i have the overwhelming majority of the time....day to day & face to face my response to such (arrogant, asinine &or ignorant) people is entirely different (if i sense they are not predators or vermin)....fostering what common ground there is.
I take it you're monitoring your weight closely. Just because you feel full doesn't mean you're getting enough calories. When I broke my jaw and had to eat liquidized food I was full up all the time due to the bulkiness of liquidized food but I went down to under 8 stones (I'm 5' 11") over the course of a couple of months.
I just watched the video and he lays it on the line in this episode according to Alex Jones this will not air on TV. If you have trouble finding it it was top 6 in my favorites.
thank you for everything,sp1,your doing an invaluable service to everyone who understands that the blanket of security thats "provided" by thr government is nothing but a facade & if some kind of disaster happens,we'll be on our own for an unknown amount of time. You couldn't have picked a better rep for an urban situation, than urbancombatsurvivor,as he's a respected prepper himself.Lastly, congrats on the diet, maybe more scenario vids, they are the best thing going on yt,imo. keep up the good work
@cheska576 find condor5x5. But seriously get out early. Go through Long Island, take boat to Bridgeport (quickly get out of Bridgeport), and head north by any means necessary. Get to Appalachian Trail and walk to Maine. Seriously if you specifically planned for that scenario you might make it.
I look forward to being a part of the scenario videos. I hope we can get many different viewpoints, as many as we can. Diversified knowledge is critical, IMO.
The diet you're doing really puts things in the perspective of FOOD = FUEL...at least for me it does.
awsome video man! You have inspired me to make some more videos. I am a prepper and a military dude myself. Im thinking of making a video on how to make a cheap and easy chest rig out of a military issue bandolier. The only issue is I get nervous on camra, then I start saying ummm every other word. haha
Good video and thanks for sharing. We all started with nothing; We must not forget that. Helping those that want to know more about prepping is our duty as preppers and right thing to do. Thanks for doing what you do!
This SHTF and prepping trend are seeming to take off more, and if you are looking for more tactical info check to see if any of you local gun shops have classes, I have taken a couple, I took a shotgun class and you would not believe the things you can do with a shotgun...
@NESurvivalPrep Also stock up on chicken and beef bullion cubes, it will also come in handy for homemade stews, and for flavoring different meals. or the same meals with different flavorings....variety will be nice, and welcome, when things turn south! I already have loads of spices. It will help the squirrels and rabits taste better!
@AppalachianFreedom Yes I agree....if it was summer and the garden was producing so much easier. I could eat out of the garden and much better selection and taste.
thanks from kentucky . you are a smack in the face we all need.. and i thank sootch for pointing me in your direction. i respect practical folks . southern i am
you sir, have an excellent attitude that encourages us all. There are many of us that are sick and tired of those who know best and have the best preps and are going to survive because they are the toughest. I feel as though you are my neighbor next door, very friendly and practical.
@LookingDownThe45 dry beans take forever to cook. which means lots of water and fuel. you can use 10% of the water and fuel to get an equal amount of nutritional value from rice. rice has a shelf life of 3 years. meat doesn't store long. best source of protein will be red wheat, rice, and peanut butter unless you can hunt.
did you think about getting blood tested at the start and at the end for cholesterols etc? I bet after eating all that basic food you will become extremely healthy!
most of the stuff we eat now is crap. Our bodies were meant to eat the foods available 10000 years ago, not the sugary, fatty crap at the stores nowadays. Veggies, grains, nuts, meat once a week or so......
@operator223 I'm going to my local red cross to donate blood. when you donate they tell you your blood type and cholesterol. the diet you're speaking of is called the paleo-diet I think.
When I was in the shipyard I lived off of beans and rice.... almost 5 days a week... This is important so that people will realize what obstacles they will be up against... beans and rice were from the cannery too.... you have good stuff, keep it up and thanks...

BitFox 1 year ago

It made me smile.
glockfan86 1 year ago
do they just can it for you or do you buy it all ready to go?
goat20101 1 year ago
@goat20101 They show you how and you can it yourself. I went for the first time about three weeks ago and had a good experience. They also have the option of 1gal mylar bags instead of cans, which is what I did. It holds a little more and sometimes costs a little less per bag. Keep in mind (at least at the cannery I went to) any bulk bags you open to can, you must can all of it no matter how much/little you buy. The extra goes on a shelf for others to buy. Took me 3hrs with 3 ppl for $200 worth.

Hey, do you do any sprouting as part of your plan. The two things I want to learn and master is baking bread and sprouting.

@snoprog Both of those things are invaluable. Sprouting is so easy. Another thing would be to learn the techniques of making great soup. You can't go wrong with good bread, good soup, and live sprouts.

Try keep it simple I think at first and add more to the concept in the later.
michelb08 1 year ago
buy Lentil IF you can find it at a good price. the Roman legion and the gladiators depended on it so it will keep you up even in the most violent of times. more expensive than rice and pasta but it will keep you healthier. eating lots of pasta and rice will produce acids in your blood stream that will clog your blood particles together, resulting in less area to bind up oxygen. this can however be countered with drinking lots of water but that is not really that good for your kidneys..
scandapoodle 1 year ago
@scandapoodle The other great thing about lentils is that they cooks so much faster than dried beans and they are my favorite thing to sprout....so delicious.
katzcradul 1 year ago
@katzcradul
i hear ya. it's easy to cook and tastes great! + if you do a soup it will keep you full for a long time. my favourite is soup is: fry: Onions with Garlic season with Spice cumin and Coriander, then add water and the red lentils the last few minutes of cooking/boiling, add the spinach and add salt + pepper to your liking. Simple but so good.
i will also look into sprout cooking, sounds like a great idea. thanks :)

@scandapoodle Your killing me....stop...my rice and oatmeal is wearing off and I have only a few pieces of deer jerky left.

@katzcradul
correction, should have been: add the spinach in the last few mins of cooking (not the lentils, which usually need to cook/boil longer).
@SP1, sorry about that as i remember army survival training and how i always hated when someone started to talk about food when i knew there was no real food to be eaten for a long time still...

I appreciate how your experiment has changed. Your advanced prepping status makes it too easy, so you have reduced your options. I expect you are wanting to find your breaking point (food fatigue). It may require you to only eat the same thing every meal.
Have you ever tried fasting? I've been experimenting with it over the last year to explore my mental and physical abilities when no food is available.
jokertim777 1 year ago
@jokertim777 It just feels like what we do in education, the dumbing down thing. He's worked hard, and paid the price to be prepared. Why cut his options in half, just because most people haven't been as diligent? If it's just a matter of how little he could survive on, he truly could just fast for the next 4 days. Clearly, one can get by on little or nothing. Just look at the 3 boys adrift for 50 days off Fiji. I'd rather him show us how providently he can live because he's prepared.

I don't know if anyone has made this suggestion, but you really ought to add sprouts to the diet. It's almost like having fresh veggies on hand.
docsimonson 1 year ago
You think you're tough for eating beans every day? There's half a million scarecrows in Denver who'd give anything for one mouthful of what you got. They've been under siege for about three months. They live on rats and sawdust bread and sometimes... on each other. At night, the pyres for the dead light up the sky. It's medieval. - Lt. Col. Andrew 'Andy' Tanner (Red Dawn)

I hate to see you change horses in mid-stream. If you have a year's supply of it on YOUR shelf, you should include it in your diet this week. It doesn't matter what anyone else has. You wanted to know if you could live off what YOU store, not what others have stored. You won't have learned as much as you could have. You still won't know if your stores will satisfy you.
katzcradul 1 year ago
@katzcradul Totally agree! What good is storing a variety if you don't use what you have to satisfy your needs and your appetite. I understand the need to calculate calories and conserve stores, but I think that it is better to have a more solid plan as far as a menu plan instead of just "surviving". I don't think I could live off of oatmeal, apple chips and rice and I know that my children would become depressed very quickly. You must have comfort foods in your storage.
atticus9799 1 year ago
@atticus9799 - of course you could survive on SP1's diet! You just would not be as happy and contented as now. Prepping is about survival, not about expecting everything to continue unchanged. And don't do your kids' thinking for them. In a WROL situation, you, as a parent, can help the kids see it as an adventure. Be their leader and give them chores with real responsibilities. They'll grow up fast and won't have time to be "depressed".
Myrmecia 1 year ago
@Myrmecia I appreciate your response, however, do not assume that I have small children. My children are too old to make an adventure out of a SHTF/WROL situation. They are completely knowledgeable of what could happen and they have responsibilities and jobs now. We work as a family team. I suppose my main point is that we should be concentrating on what we can do with everything we have put back, rotating and using what we have stored to give variety. Morale will be important.
atticus9799 1 year ago
Truly thanks for all the info.
SixtyAteOutdoors 1 year ago
@LookingDownThe45 Store dried beans, store plenty of them. Don't trust the off hand advice you receive on these posts. You got a response here that's way off! Compare nutritional value of 1/2 cup of cooked dried beans to 1/2 cup cooked white rice. If I could only have one, I'd take the beans, hands down. You can cut the cooking time by soaking over night, draining, bringing to a boil, covering for 1 hr. and let sit, and then back on fire to finish cooking. Research!
katzcradul 1 year ago
Great video to put into my playlists for others to find you. Everyone needs to start preparing immediately. Everyone can do something; even some "ramennoodle prepping" is acceptable for many scenario's. Do what you can and hope the scenario will allow you to contribute to what others have done. LDS is a great place for long term prep; and you don't get a sermon with every can. =) AND everyone does have something to contribute. True: "lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink".
IronRangeSurvival 1 year ago
Have you considered the preparation time to prepare those few items for consumption, (without the aid of running water, and an electric stove top)?
I figure that gathering fuel, and water will be a major task for most people. Might be interesting to integrate the concept in this current experiment.

Myrmecia 1 year ago
@Myrmecia I wouldn't look for SP1 to get fat this week eating more rice and oatmeal! He's increasing carbs but he's also eating a good deal of fiber with the oats and apples. IBS shouldn't be an issue. Jerky is o.k. as long as you have plenty of water available....it's high in sodium and tends to make you thirsty. No diabetes with pemmican, but you'd need to get a cardiologist!
katzcradul 1 year ago
@katzcradul - "I wouldn't look for SP1 to get fat this week" - ha ha! Quite so. I was commenting as if he had to live on the stored grains for a year, not a week. As I wrote on his earlier diet video, for a number of reasons, you need to be on a diet for 8-10 weeks before you will learn anything of reasonable certainty. Incidentally, jerky need not be high in sodium if you make it the simple way without any salt or other additives.

I take it you're monitoring your weight closely. Just because you feel full doesn't mean you're getting enough calories.
