me some tricks about heeleers I've had my two for two years they are brother and sister named Zeus and Allie and they are the best damn dogs ever but I need some training advice. I would live it if I didn't need to have them on leashes downtown and things like that. Like not chasing bicyclists right as soon as I let them out the front door
My 2+ cents... Ya done good, these guys need a purpose and will reward with willingness to learn and please. They also have a strong desire to be an integral part of the pack. Ours go with us everywhere and won't leave the truck until asked. They also know left from right. As for color... around here: Red or red/white is Red Heeler, Blue or blue/white is Blue Heeler and Red/white/blue is a Tri-color Heeler(Star Spangled).
You're his human, call him what will. Real Good Stuff.
I think he looks like a Purple Palmer, myself... Would you mind if I called him that?? :O)) Nice trick! I had a Blue Heeler-Akita mix for 14-1/2 years, knew about 25 commands, could climb a ladder, hand signals from 200 feet away, didn't need a leash downtown, etc. What they learn is mainly limited by their trainers.
Hah, my ACD just taught himself to use a MIG and is welding up a new gate right now! He did get the tubing precut though, gonna have to work on that. Lazy bugger. Great dogs but if you let them sneak in any dominance ploys, they take the promotion immediately. They're at their best with ribs showing a little bit and exercised until they fall over (if you don't have stock for them to move). Unless they're at work, don't let them precede you on walks, through doors, up and down stairs etc..
Best dogs ever! I got two of them, and I will probably always have this breed for the rest of my dog owning life. Loyal, smart, energetic, and great with people (if given the chance anyway). If I taught either one of mine this trick, they would probably try to follow me every time I left the house.
LOL! That's adorable! I had a red heeler mix but she never saw a farm. Excellent dog :) She had a blue muzzle and the rest was red with cream paws. Very cool dog. Sadly, she passed away last July. She was 13 and had battled diabetes for 2 years.
why is everyone harpin on you about what you call him red heeler red blue heeler australian cattle dog tall heeler short heeler skinny heeler fat heeler slow heeler fast heeler it dont matter what he is called he closed the damn gate thats awsome
that dog is ingreable smart. we just got a red heeler we are training it and it really smart like it wont run off or nothing like that. but its when i run it will try to bite my heel
hey ho big do these guys get my dogs are twenty inches and it said that is there height but i think it is kinda small and btw when do they stop growing?
ive never heard people complain so much about what color a man calls his dog. it dont really matter if the dog is purple, hes pretty dog gone smart, put a video of your dog doing that.

Excellent trick! I need to teach that to me heeler now! But, with respect, there's not such thing as a red blue heeler... There's a red heeler, and a blue heeler, both of which are Australian Cattledogs...
@Savant74656 Wouldn't that be a purple heeler? Lol, just kidding. But I had a dog who was a perfect mix of a Blue mom and a Red dad. She was just gorgeous. :)
Can u tell me how u tought him to do that cus i have a blue heeler puppy that is 8-9 mounths old does that mean its to late to train him ? Cus he wont come when i call him that well and it takes me a full 10-20 minits to put his harness on so can u please help me cus this is the first blue heeler ive ever had
Are you trying to start a real fuss? Heeler folks will fuss about what you call the breed and/or color. Man, for sure they won't like my training methods! With dog on a leash stand dog against open gate. 1 wrap of leash around gate. Get on other side - say "here" -pull lightly- make dog walk towards you. Your dog will come around. MAKE him mind, Be firm, but don't be mean! At 1 yr old or so the dog will change mentally , At that age, if made to mind- he will not defy you! But, if he wins-oooooh!
So did you have to teach him or did he just decide to be quirky? Pretty smart dog either way, and pretty as well.
I used to have a border collie blue heeler mixed. Dang hyper dog, would always get himself in trouble. Herding the neighbors horses and sheep, one time he even let all the horses out of their barn. Luckily they were turned out into a padock instead of just being free.
thats just a red heeler. not a red blue heeler lol. ive had a red heeler before, she was a very bright dog. i have a male heeler now. his name is bear and he is the most incredible dog ive ever owned. they are just great dogs to have. very loyal and athletic and extremly smart.
Call them "red ACD's", "'red' Australian Cattle Dog's", or "red Blue Heeler"..it doesn't matter, unless they are yard dogs, then they are just that- yard dogs. Boss was a true working cow dog and I prefer to call him a "red Blue Heeler".
I was talking about the originators of the breed: Robert Kaleski, Thomas Hall, Tom Bentley, Fred Davis and Tom and Harry Bagust. The decision to call them Australian Cattle Dogs had to do with the negative connotation and biting reputation. Plus it just sounds a lot better! I should know. I've owned/rescued/retrained over 300 of them.
Great dog! My heeler was really easy to teach tricks. They really pay attention well and are good students. I taught mine hand signals when she was a pup. Now she is 15 years old and recently shes gone deaf so it's made that an easier transition.
I taught my red to shut the front door, keeps me on the couch drinking beer! Heelers are the best dogs ever. I like how yours "walks" that gate shut, classic. Mine slams the hell outta the door when he shuts it!
God I love these dogs! I just lost my 17 yr old heeler this past New Years Eve. There's nothing in the world like 'em. I'm waiting to heal from the loss and then I'll start looking for another best friend.
that dog is awesome

After three years, this is still one of my favorite videos.
It's obvious that the two of you have a relationship based on mutual trust and respect.
