Japan FTW! you are Japanese though, right? Your hair and glasses look a lot like something a typical Japanese guy would wear. Either way, awesome drumming!
Very Nice! I always felt this was one of Ringo's best drum song and yet it doesn't get mentioned very often. Great song! Great Drums! And you did a great job! Thank you for posting this :)
Ringo is brilliant sylist, the fills are like a third melody line. To this day drummers still don't fill in the way he did.Not playing an instrument that played notes perse, and working with 3 of the most strongest melody writers in commercial music in history made his playing musically fit. More like a percussionist than a 1234 time keeper.Even in his earliest recordings he was incorporating this unique style.
@MrBlackOps291 And when you think of just the physicality of drumming. Ringo's 5'6"(ish) frame hit those drums good and hard. He's got some nice power. This track and Tomorrow Never Knows, Helter Skelter, some nice loud drumming there.
I watched you do this before I went to Best Buy to check out their instruments. I do not play the drums, but with this video in mind I tore those drums apart, no kidding. I had no idea I could play so well. I also played Ringo's solo from "The End". And those flourishes you did at 2:05 were fantastic.
And that's why I'm subscribed to this guy.....if you ever get a chance can you find the song Kaleidoscope by a band called Ride. If you could get that song out on drums, that would be great, i have yet found anyone that can master that song, but i think you could ....
Great stuff. I am learning how to play drums at a ripe age, and seeing your video gives me a better notion of how to play. What type of snare and hi-hats are you playing? Thanks.
It always drives me nuts when people who have never sat down at a kit make an ignorant comment about Ringo being a lousy or sub-par drummer. Dude was one of the best rock drummers ever, and John Lennon wasn't just saying that to make Ringo feel good but was dead on accurate.
Tell me, those disrespectful to Ringo Starr-- How much better could the other drummers who you say are better than him have performed just a bit better than he did for each of the masterpieces of the Beatles?
Excellent job! I'm a drummer myself - and Ringo is my all-time favorite and biggest influence - and I've never seen anybody REALLY play like him. Until now! That is the closest I've ever seen anybody get to Ringo's feel/fills/etc. I'm very impressed.
I have never heard a drummer capture the sound and feel of Ringo's drumming the way you do. OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!! Same for your cover of "Rain"--excellent. I wish you didn't live in Japan---I'm looking for a drummer. BSP
Whoa. I've never been one for "guitar covers" or "drum covers" where someone basically just plays along with the song. But this is truly an exception. If there was ever a drum cover worth making, this is it, and you were clearly the guy to do it.
very cool... it makes me want to break out my drum kit for the first time in ages. Also I'm hoping my daughter will carry on my Dad's drumming legacy where I wasn't able to....SUBSCRIBED!
Ringo's main strength was his fills. He had some very interesting stickings and note dynamics. He also staggered the beat a bit, and left out notes in odd places to create space. This particular track is a great example of that. The mixing of the drums was also great.. a very raw sound.
Awesome job! You did a great job on Rain also! Not to sound negative or nitpicky, but Ringo starts the little march beat on the second bridge a measure too early on the recording @ 1:38ish. Just in case you didn't know!
@jonmur77 : right on! It so aggravates me when I hear someone say that Ringo was lame; quite the contrary! His drumming was incredibly musical - he played "the song" and thus came up with some of the most interesting drum parts ever! ...you can teach Anyone to play the beat - it's a different thing altogether to play the song. My kudos go out to this young man in the video; Ringo's special touch was his deep 'pocket' feel, and it's nice to 'watch' it in action with this well done video.
@Marshallsg Add to that I feel Fine, which is said to be inspired by the rhythm of What I'd Say by Ray Charles ... Ringo had some subtle rhythms if one isn't listening carefully ... he wasn't a power drummer like Bohnam, he was a different type of drummer ... summing it up for Ringo, Buddy Rich said .. "he's ok .." ... which means Ringo is better than most people were aware of ... if Buddy said that about you as a drummer, then everyone else should just shut-up.
Maybe Ringo isn't remembered for his chops, and maybe "She Said, She Said" isn't the single greatest Beatles song, but it's my favorite Ringo track. It just oozes with the peculiar magic that made Ringo so essential to the Beatles magic. I've spent a lot of time trying to EQ that song and tease the drums up out of the right channel, but I should've just waited for this video. Thanks!

There's no way Ringo played this. However, I can believe that Bernard Purdie might have.
The proof that this is not Ringo the way the player puts the hi-hat together with the snare right on the backbeat after coming out of fills at 0:03-0:10 (and etc.).
No white rock drummer of the 60s was playing such a "modern" lick. You hear this sort of thing from Harvey Mason (of Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters"), but not white kids from England. Maybe Ringo was showed the lick by another player?
Youtubers, I just did something wild! Open two windows: this page for percussion and Buddy Clontz doing She SAid She Said on guitar (search for it). Carefully synchronize them to start at identical spots at the start of the song. Then crank up the volume and enjoy! Because both renditions are timed to the original playing in the background they're in perfect sync. And it's a beautiful effect.
@aimtrue45 Ringo's drum fills are signature to The Beatles music. He's the unsung hero. One of his iconic drumming is the song Tommorow Never Knows. In the Anthology, George Martin described it as "Ringo's very characteristic drumming."
