I agree with you totally,.Maestro TJS. Never cared for filigreed Chopin much. Just his simpler, cleaner pieces. I'm going to work on becoming more familiar with Schumann's piano music. The 'Prophet Bird' is one of my recently discovered favorites. His work is so varied. His two egos : Florestan & ?what?, can't remember, so different. Syphilis is a terrible way to die.
@injamaven Some of the children survived. Some died before Clara, but others didn't. I just came across an article from 1921 where they were talking about two elderly, unmarried daughters of Robert and Clara who were living in poverty at that time. (Still an unhappy story, mind you.)
@injamaven In my mind, Schumann had a more beautiful soul than either of those two, which is duly reflected in the music. In his greatest pieces I feel he reached a level the other early Romantics never did; it was pure artistry, never for show.
I've really never understood all the Chopin worship and unfortunately he is the most represented Romantic. He did write a few extremely beautiful pieces and I acknowledge his genius, but if I never heard the rest again, I would not complain.

What a lovely composition. Poor,fated Schumann was a under-rated genius. He was so creative, in rhythm, in key changes.. . .

Robert Schumann, what a tragic life. Think he's underappreciated. I find him so much more varied than either Chopin or Mendelssohn.
