Actually, number Two was really just an elaborate trap for the rebels and never intended to actually destroy a planet. The Original Death Star was constructed in orbit around a planet in the Horuz system.

i've seen a lot of idiots on youtube but you guys are the biggest....
you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.... so leave star wars alone and go watch a documentary or something that have exact dates for you to make sense!
The first death star was build by slave labor and had supply problems and issues that's why it took 21 years. The second one was much faster, because they had the design techniques down and use self replicating construction droids. so don't talk about what you don't know or do your research.
Yup they were building a second Death star as a back up after the plans to the first were stolen. It was built in space by a slave labour force much of the cost/materials were plundered from most of the galaxy. Besides, the Empire pretty much run everything so cost isn't really a problem. The Alderan never being mentioned again doesn't make any sense. My favourite hole is why not just blow up the planet between them and the Rebel base at the end of the film? Duh! :P
If I remember correctly from a timeline in an old Star Wars Insider magazine, there is 3 year lapse between IV & V, and a 1 year lapse between V & VI...... unless the writers of the magazine didn't know what the hell they were writing about.
Its wasnt a new death star. They tried to blow it up in "A new hope" By the time Return of the jedi came around they had it repaired to the point of working order. Its the same death star not a new one.

The time span between the ending of Empire Strikes Back and the beginning of Return of the Jedi is a couple of months at the most. At the end of 'Empire' Lado and Chewie take off on the mission of getting Han back, and Luke can't join them simply because he needs to recuperate. There is no reason to assume that this rescue operation took many months. Which begs the question: why did Yoda grow so old in two months time, i.e the time span from his training of Luke and Luke's return to Dagobah?
It funny how these people can have such (by my opinion) stupid views on someone else's life work and baby. But they ask not to give them a hard time on their crude vid because it was late at night and they were just talking. If your gonna be a critic then be prepared to be criticized.
Okay. You got one good point: Leia not caring about Alderaan.
All the rest is kinda silly and stupid. The Empire basically stripped worlds of their resources to build the Deathstars. They could do it because they were a intergalactic dicatorship.
The first deathstar took a long time to build because of several design and supply problems that could be avoided in the building of the second one.
It has been twenty years and they are in the future...maybe building technology improved in those twenty years so it takes less than half the time it used to in order to construct a death star. Also the empire is an interplantary dictatorship commanding vast resources, material and in man power, by absolute fiat as well as use of a power cosmic dark force. With all these advantages the whole issue of 'how they build a death star so quickly' sort of gets answered and pales into insignificance.
@baronvg Ok man Ill admit there are alot of plot inconsistencies but this one is like the least of all, remember that it is a fictional story you are questioning the most irrelevant of all of the inconsistencies, Its a futuristic setting meaning if it took close to build a space station in 20 years, its not really that hard to believe, the more plot inconsistencies are like, why Obi-wan doesnt remember R2-D2 etc..
Dude its the past do the math... it actually took 20 years to build it right? which means that it was atleast 10 more years between the 2 movies there 4 its half way. so 10 years between the movies for half way is 10 years. more math ive ever done...
I'm pretty sure they do construct Death Stars in space. Could you imagine seeing a death star just sitting on the ground on some planet with a bunch of cranes placing girders on it? I mean what if that damn thing started rolling away?
One major plot hole that I rarely see mentioned is that Leia talks about her memories of her mother in Return of the Jedi......in a way that clearly indicates she isn't remembering her adopted mother. The time intervals between the original three movies: 3 years between SW & TESB, then 3 months between TESB & RofJ. You can work out the interval between the trilogies by Luke's age: about 20 years.
@Numinous20111 agreed completely. Its clear that in ROTJ Leia actually knew her mother and it's a very nice moment between Luke and Leia as he hears what his mother is like. But then Lucas made the prequels and forgot about that scene and in having her Padme die it ruins the entire scene.
A. By the time construction on Death Star II had begun, construction techniques had advanced: It was built in a resource rich system and It had an improved design that allowed for more construction droids to be present.
B. This is the Empire we're talking about, money is no object.
C. There are ALOT of planets in the Star Wars galaxy, and many have been destroyed before Alderaan, e.g. Taris, Telos IV, Despayre etc
It took 2:45 seconds to try and get to the point. I want that 165 seconds of my life back. Just to answer the question... I'm sure a galactic empire can probably build two (or even more) massive space stations at the same time.
@Delta2357 I'm sure there is in some EU book, they have to try to explain and justify everything in the EU, but it reduces the dramatic impact of the Death Star if there just happens to be a spare floating around somewhere. Frankly, ROTJ was a weaker film for resorting to having a second Death Star rather than coming up with an original threat.
@KenoshiAkai i know its the worst movie of all the series (my opinion) but still manages to be one of the greatest movie series of all time that has revolutionized cinema in both direction, special effects and sound
so while its not even near to be perfect it still is a masterpiece
revenge of the sith was 19 years before a a new hope and return of the jedi was 4 years later but the thing is the first time you do something i tch or anything else always take considerable more time than later, besides they had to test it, and in that time the empire was still consolidating therefor there wasnt an easy way to relocate personal and resorces to buld it but after they got the "hang" of it was a lot easier and vader is the head of the imperial fleet not cia look for SW wikia
The time between the end of a new hope and the beginning of return of the jedi was 5-6 years. The Death Star at the end of episode 3 was a prototype. Alderaan is Leia home. Get your facts right. You probally dont know who Biggs Darklighter is. Also Alderaan is mentioned repeatedly in star wars comics.

(2:30) Answer: Have you ever watched the 1997 movie, "Contact" ?
I'm probably wrong as I haven't read the novels, but the Emperor likely ordered two Death Stars to be built, but only had the basic framework of the second one built until the Rebellion could expose the flaws in the first one. The Ep VI title sequence says the Empire secretly began construction on the new Death Star, but it didn't specify when, and the second Death Star, although operational, wasn't finished at the end of Ep VI.
@kevinFahring1324 5-10 years? lmao no... Empire strikes back and RoTJ are set 1 year apart.. there is even a novel/comic/VG (shadows of the empire) that details all that happens inbetween
@daniellisnermeicker idk haha... i havent seent them in a long time, but still they could have been building another one while the other one was active or being built
@kevinFahring1324 The second Death Star was built by self-replicating droids. That's why it took such short time to build it ,months I believe, plus that the Empire had experience from the first Death Star's construction which aided them further. Construction began between episode 5 and 6.
Alright, geek correction time for this sub-Kevin Smith nonsense. The Death Star seen in Star Wars was not the first Death Star. There was at least one test version built (the one seen in Revenge of the Sith). And the intention of the Empire was always to have more than one battle station. And how do you build a Death Star? Gain tyrannical authority over every planet there is and take their resources. You know, be a villian. Besides, as people say, it doesn't bear examination. It's just a movie.
of everything in star wars, THIS is what bothers you. THIS is the one thing that bothers you out of all of the imaginary shit in star wars...not lightsabers or jedi tricks? Not wookies and...i dont know, a 3 foot tall green dude moving shit with his mind???!?!?
the death star was being constructed during episode 3 and was operational in episode 4. and it wasn't 30 years it was 17 years. and yeah 17 years went by between episode 3 and 4 but you said they are more advanced...they probably built them with droids
Between episode 3 and 4 the Empire was probably still consolidating its power base and economy. I Think it would have been a side project. So Between episode 4 and 6 the Emporer was all powerful so it could throw all its resources at it and it could use slave labour and stolen business` like Nazi Germany. Just my thought.
@xAquinasx Actually no... the only way years and days would last the same amount of time as ours is if time on every planet in the Star Wars galaxy was based on a single planet with the same exact size of Earth and the same distance from one sun as Earth and that sun would have to be the same also. Other wise the measurement of time would be different for each planet. An Earth year is not the same amount of time as a Mars year, Puto year etc. Each planet would be different.
I have a much simpler explanation, why it didn't take so long to build the second Death star (and it was 4 years according to the timelines, not 2-3 years): in A New Hope, the emperial senate was dissolved. This made it possible to rase much more funds for a secret project and tp finish it faster, although the second death star has a 5 times higher diameter then the first one. Also the second death star is only about halve finished in EP VI. And they also had better/faster construction droids.
solution: Palpatine couldn't of started building the death star until the end of episode 3, after of which, he has to commit his resources to quelling any remaining resistance sympathetic to the republic. So it could of been very fast for all we knew...and he may of not started building it, not wait... starkiller, this is canon, spots it being built, this is about 18 years after episode 3, so you have a rough time period, it's about the same stage as it is in episode 6, so, yeah... there you go!
@OsamaBinLooney Well, if is about 19 in EP I, she is 29 in EP II, the difference between 19 and 29 doesn't make you look so much different. According to some expanded Universe sources, she is only 14 in EP I, but this of couse contradicts the movie.
no it was more like 7 9 years between star wars 4 and 6 because if u play the video game renegade squadron and read some of the books you will find that the rebels went look for a new base after the 4th movie and when the found hoth after a few years they lived there for about 3 to 4 years on hoth so no it was a while after the first death star was destroyed and building the next one
@Multi80sman No EP IV was in 0 BBY/ABY, EP V in 3 ABY and EP VI in 4 ABY accodring t the offcial timeline. If any game states different times, this is non-Canon. Actually, George Loucas has some people working for him who decide what is Canon, especially when there are contradictions betweeen different parts of the Expanded Universe. This actually happens very often, because the EU is much too big to be overseen by a single person like a book author or a video game story editor.
Read the book Death Star by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry and you'll find out more, also it was 17 years between Revenge of the Sith and New Hope, which a better plot hole would be, how does Obi-wan look like an old man?
Making it the second time was easy, all they had to do was duplicate it and close the frickin exhaust port. The first time, they had to build a prototype first, get slavers to build it, and many other issues.
For all you know they talked about Alderaan offscreen. After all yearrs pass between episode IV and episode V. Princess Leia had plenty of time in her cell to come to terms with the loss of Alderaan, at least to the extent that she can focus on the important task of preventing the Death Star from destroying another planet.
The universe is extremely large and the Death Stars are extremely slow moving. Therefore it makes perfect sense to be building what you called a "back up" as a Death Star to patrol a differnet area of the galaxy.
They were not "testing" the Death Star but instead used it to blow up Alderaan in order to make Princess Leia talk.
So now before you go off at me for "flaming" you, remember that if you weren't interested in it, as your lack of knowledge shows, you shouldn't have uploaded this video.
I don't get whey people hate on this vid so much. They're obviously SW fans talking about what they didn't get in the movie. Fans of stuff will do that. Like, I love Doctor Who, but how the heck did the Doctor blow up ALL the Daleks in journeys end? makes no sense. Doesn't mean I'm hating on Doctor Who or anything.
If you're not into Star Wars and you were both tired, why did you even bother "just talking about whatever"? And why should that shield you from flames? :)
That's little different than someone saying, "Hey, I don't know squat about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but I'm going to go ahead and pontificate on the matter. But don't flame me: I was tired and don't really care about the subject!"
Something revealed to reading starwars fans was that the second and third deathstars (yes there was a third, just a ring and the main gun) were being built even before the first deathstar was completely operational. They planned to spread them around the Empire to put fear into the populace to gain full control over their subjugated peoples. There are alot of things people can find on this stuff. I recommend if you have any other questions, look at Wookiepedia
A week between episode 4 or 6 ? Really?! It was actually + than 4 years. The time between episode 3 and episode 4 is about 19 years. And you have no idea when they started building it. Also if you saw episode 6, you may notice that they have a more limited time to build the second. Also where did they got the money? Are you that ignorant? Trillions of people pay taxes to the Empire, now make your counts. Also before commenting something, try to learn at least a tiny part of it, assholes.
1) What was seen in episode 3 was the Death Star Prototype, not the same Death Star seen in episode 4 (Death Star Prototype started construction in 19 BBY, was destroyed in 11 BBY),
2) With that bit of information it is safe to assume that it would take 8 of less years to create the Death Star (11 BBY to 3 BBY) , in 3 BBY, the Force Unleashed takes place... on the Death Star.
3) Having 2 prior Death Stars, it probably took less time to make another (4 years)
Erm... Maybe the first death star was completed like five years before its screen appearance? Idk. Is this possible or does the canon conflict with this?
After they built the first deathstar, they had more efficent building methods and they had several more workers (they imported slaves/prisoners from Kessel)
I was always under the impression that the Death Star II was significantly smaller than the first one. Additionally, after the first one, they probably knew what they were doing which would speed up production.
I think they build it in space some website (gizmodo.com) calculated the size of it and the mass of metal and air required and calculated the actual cost for carying all this into orbit using the known earth technology cost by flights ($95 millions per ton) etc. the price is something with almost 28 numbers in dollars (with no options no engine, no radio, no gps, just a big metal ball pressurized)
I'm sure someone else already posted it but Grand Moff Tarkin decides to blow up Alderaan to make a point, because she pissed him off. Funny how Anakin is less evil than the old jackass..
Most ship building took place in orbit in places like Kuat drive yards, of Kuat. The death star would be similarly constructed in space, at the Maw facility.
The Death Star costs 20000 credits in the Empire at War (A video game about star wars), but then again in that game an Imperial Star Destroyer, the largest ship in the game, costs 4750 credits (Or something like that, with Tarkin or Emperor present -25% costs), so im guessing its simply 20000 so it would be POSSIBLE to build it.
I've no idea if this is accurate, but wouldn't a great portion of the Death Star be empty vaccum? In RotJ, ships can fly around in the core of the ship, and that was pretty big.
Point is, it might look big, but it's hollow. Much cheaper.
Well, it would seem logical in Imperial terms, if you're going to build what's touted as the "ultimate power in the universe", yer gonna build to expand your empire. One Death Star can only exert so much presence. It would make sense to me that a second was being built by the time the first came online. The Tiatanic, for instance, was one of 3 sharing its' characteristics as a class ocean liner...
...and as for construction techniques and technology in manifesting the fuck-all/be-all of all Imperial battle stations, I'd wager the Empire was economical and ruthless, utilizing fast zero-G construction techniques and cheap exotic superhard materials and joining processes; not giving a womp rat's ass who they killed in the process. Just get the job done--and it better pass inspection, bitches. 'Cause Kessel's not too far and they can ALWAYS use help.
Ok so the time frame between a new hope and return is probably 5 years so why not build a second one more far that way plus if your using slaves its alot cheaper this video is utter Bullshit...
4. Alderaan is a peaceful planet - has been since long before episode 1. Peaceful planets do not make very good movies. Wartime planets, and planets caught in a galactic conflict, do.
Yes, I am a Star Wars Nerd. Deal with it.
Any of these facts can be checked on Wookieepedia.
1. 6 years between ANH and RotJ - 5 between ANH and ESB, 1 between ESB and RotJ. This is the official Star Wars timeline.
2. To build the Death Star, there was a huge factory called the Maw Installation. That was where the first one was built. The pieces for Death Star II were flown out on slave ships to Endor. Slave labor, obviously, was extensive. Wookiees were used extensively. Also, it is easier to build a second copy of something than tou buil the first
What makes you think that they only built them one at a time? Odds are that they would have started building the second, more improved, death star while the first death star was being built.
Its more than what they're even discussing, yes it took roughly 19, closer to 18 years to build the first Death Star, we're also talking about a period of political upheaval, in the Galaxy with Palatine consolidating political power and bringing the outer rim into the "Civilized Galaxy" that takes time and effort, after the destruction of DS1 the empire poured ALL its resources into DS2 A WHOLE GALAXY of resources, its like they say, you can get it done you just have to have no limits.
if it took 20 years to build it... that means in 10 years it was half built... so.. in 6 years it could be half built now that they had experience building it... they obviously used more resources and people... now that the empire is bigger than it was back on revenge of the sith...
what can you say about a conversation about star wars between 2 complete idiots that are ignorant of any star wars canon. this information they are discussing (wrongly i might add) is easily found if you have google. what a bunch of hacks.
Who says it took the entire duration of 20 years to build the Death Star between Ep 3 & 4? We just know they were working on it at one point, and it was active in the next. They could have finished one and started the next one... planning on eventually having a fleet of these in order to 'maintain control over the systems' was probably a long term goal...
in the 111 there were like 25% of the death star so maybe there took there fast to build it and the 2 one maybe they just now were part of the death star were fit and there were faster than the 1st one and idk why they talk about that planet again
I feel a disturbance in web like a Billion subscribers cried out in nerdrage and thumbed down this piece of crap. I can't believe the whole point of this conversation yet He tells her Not knowing SW isn't important as 2:00 "you don;t need to be well versed in it."
So being ignorant of the subject you're talking about is perfectly ok if your a douche. Not like there are magic places where you can see old movies and series. If only there was some way. Oh wait it's called every fucking where now!
@Citrakite Between III and IV is 19 years. Between IV and VII is 4 years. There's actually multiple prototypes before the First Full DS was built. Grand Moff Tarkin ordered the DS to fire on Aldeeran and did so to force Leia to tell where the Rebel's base was and to establish fear in the Empire as it was a high profile target. It's remains are now a memorial in SW universe.
Watch the movies you're going to try to pick apart so you don't have to look like a retard.
For one thing, SW was a story completely devised in the head of George Lucas (with maybe some inspiration for certain things). Next, it takes time to travel, even in hyperspace... ESPECIALLY in hyperspace. You are traveling at faster-than-light speeds, meaning that you could theoretically travel for an hour to find out several years have passed. Also, one of you said that you haven't even seen the 5th and 6th movies! How do you make judgments on something you know nothing about?!
they actualy were begining the 2nd death star when the first was being finished to expand the rein of the empire and it took less time because they knew what they were doing but they do metion alderan in the expanded universe they even fing a new planet like it and name it new alderan
Look about the DS(death star) they began constructing it a few hours after Duku got the plans. The fact that it's ready in ep 4 doesn't mean they finished it somewhere in ep 3 or after ep 3. And for the payment in that time you give the empire what they want or you get shot. And what is the problem with transporting the parts with ships to space???
Time is relative. Time on Earth has nothin to do with time on Mars as each planet has its own effect on time/space. So while it took the Falcon 18 days to make it to Bespin (so I've read), Luke could have been on Dagobah for years. Try looking up the twin paradox. As for the Death Star in ROTS, that was a prototype that was never finished. Look up Maw Installation.
Also dont forget mabye technology increased too. The Empire was extremely powerful and had alot of credits. Mabye they got the help from another species tech who knows. But I know that there was a gap between New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and to add on to Im think there was a gap in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Like Han cant just magically appear in Jabba's Palace.
You guys forgot that there is a big gap between a New Hope and The Empire Strikes back. You cant just teleport to Hoth in a sec it took time for the battle to happen.
You guys forgot that there is a big gap between a New Hope and The Empire Strikes back. You cant just teleport to Hoth in a sec it took time for the battle to happen.
The answer is very easy, I have been in the Navy and know people who have worked in R&D in the Navy.
Research and Development takes a lot longer then making something once it is developed. Example- Sweep Wing or Geometry Wing Technology was developed in the mid to late 1950s. Fighters with this technology came out in very late 1960s early 1970s. Once technology was developed F-14s and F-111s could be produced in mass production.
Technological advances like self replicating construction droids where the reason the second death star was built so quickly. And the first death star suffered from massive delays and set backs which is why it took 20 years to build.

The time intervals between the original three movies: 3 years between SW & TESB, then 3 months between TESB & RofJ. You can work out the interval between the trilogies by Luke's age: about 20 years.
Numinous20111 1 month ago 2
@Numinous20111 agreed completely. Its clear that in ROTJ Leia actually knew her mother and it's a very nice moment between Luke and Leia as he hears what his mother is like. But then Lucas made the prequels and forgot about that scene and in having her Padme die it ruins the entire scene.
MsPhysics22100 1 month ago

Delta2357 2 months ago
@Delta2357 I'm sure there is in some EU book, they have to try to explain and justify everything in the EU, but it reduces the dramatic impact of the Death Star if there just happens to be a spare floating around somewhere. Frankly, ROTJ was a weaker film for resorting to having a second Death Star rather than coming up with an original threat.
KenoshiAkai 2 months ago

It's just a movie.

xAquinasx 4 months ago

For all you know they talked about Alderaan offscreen. After all yearrs pass between episode IV and episode V. Princess Leia had plenty of time in her cell to come to terms with the loss of Alderaan, at least to the extent that she can focus on the important task of preventing the Death Star from destroying another planet.
cazuke101 4 months ago
The universe is extremely large and the Death Stars are extremely slow moving. Therefore it makes perfect sense to be building what you called a "back up" as a Death Star to patrol a differnet area of the galaxy.
They were not "testing" the Death Star but instead used it to blow up Alderaan in order to make Princess Leia talk.
So now before you go off at me for "flaming" you, remember that if you weren't interested in it, as your lack of knowledge shows, you shouldn't have uploaded this video.
cazuke101 4 months ago
I don't get whey people hate on this vid so much. They're obviously SW fans talking about what they didn't get in the movie. Fans of stuff will do that. Like, I love Doctor Who, but how the heck did the Doctor blow up ALL the Daleks in journeys end? makes no sense. Doesn't mean I'm hating on Doctor Who or anything.
notablegoat 4 months ago
If you're not into Star Wars and you were both tired, why did you even bother "just talking about whatever"? And why should that shield you from flames? :)
That's little different than someone saying, "Hey, I don't know squat about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but I'm going to go ahead and pontificate on the matter. But don't flame me: I was tired and don't really care about the subject!"
Just sayin' ;-)

Something revealed to reading starwars fans was that the second and third deathstars (yes there was a third, just a ring and the main gun) were being built even before the first deathstar was completely operational. They planned to spread them around the Empire to put fear into the populace to gain full control over their subjugated peoples. There are alot of things people can find on this stuff. I recommend if you have any other questions, look at Wookiepedia

Logically, they started the second one before the first one was done. It doesn't matter what it costs when you own nearly the entire galaxy.
The reason the first one took so long is because of all the R&D and testing necessary. This is true with all technologies.
RogerwilcoFoxtrot 6 months ago

4. Alderaan is a peaceful planet - has been since long before episode 1. Peaceful planets do not make very good movies. Wartime planets, and planets caught in a galactic conflict, do.
Yes, I am a Star Wars Nerd. Deal with it.

1. 6 years between ANH and RotJ - 5 between ANH and ESB, 1 between ESB and RotJ.
Also, it is easier to build a second copy of something than tou buil the first
3. His name is Grand Moff Tarkin

Look about the DS(death star) they began constructing it a few hours after Duku got the plans. The fact that it's ready in ep 4 doesn't mean they finished it somewhere in ep 3 or after ep 3. And for the payment in that time you give the empire what they want or you get shot. And what is the problem with transporting the parts with ships to space???
helldrake77777 9 months ago
Time is relative. Time on Earth has nothin to do with time on Mars as each planet has its own effect on time/space. So while it took the Falcon 18 days to make it to Bespin (so I've read), Luke could have been on Dagobah for years. Try looking up the twin paradox. As for the Death Star in ROTS, that was a prototype that was never finished. Look up Maw Installation.

You guys forgot that there is a big gap between a New Hope and The Empire Strikes back. You cant just teleport to Hoth in a sec it took time for the battle to happen.

This video is classified as Entertainment, but it wasn't even remotely entertaining. I find that disturbing.
