The emblem only had the "V" if your full sized Chevy Impala, Biscayne or BelAir only had the 283, the flags were added to the "V" if you were running one of the 327 packages (250 or 300 HP) and if you had the 409 motor you had the entire emblem shown. I do believe the 409 also came in a mild 340 HP version at some point in the 60's.

i myself am 17 year old cali mexican kid lol and i can tell what engine came with chevy cars from 1955 on onto 1969 just by looking at the emblems!!!! i love chevys!!! also i can tell what year a chevy impala is just by looking at the steerig wheel and fenders and so on i consider myself a impala expert lol

ya but the 409 led to the 454 in a way which was the biggest motor around and pumped out 450 horses and it made the mopars cry becuase they had nothing to beat it not even the 427 corvettes could beat the 70 chevelle with the 454 best car 70 chevelle

Believe it or not, one of my friends in Hamilton has the ultrarare 427 version of the engine. Cool, huh?

Had a yellow with black interior 64 Chevy Impala convertible in 1964. Bought it brand new in July 64 for $3100.

Well car makers used to lie about the true output. Simaler to the 1970 Chevelle SS it probably put out 500 hp. 425 is very good .

Yes I remember the 289 HO. Nasty motor for the mustang. Speed did dyno testing on some of the vintage motors that a company reproduces and got 830hp out of a Hemi that was built simalar to the original.The 409 did 410 hp. Those were the days.

the 1962 and 63 had 405 HP...but in 64 they added a few to 425 But a ford 427 or Dodge 426 would beat it in the 1/4 mile....not by much lol...great drags in Cali back then

1962 2X4 was factory rated 409hp.

1963 was when Chevy increased the rating to 425.

1965 it was rated at 400hp with only one 4bbl.

There was no 409 in 1965...corvett had the 427Z mystery Engine they called it but the 396 replaced the 1964 409 I was there racing my C Gasser in Cali...check it out...later bro

There was one version in '61 - 360HP. There were two in '62: One 4bbl for 380HP and two 4bbl for 409HP. From '63 THROUGH the first part of '65, there were three! Hydraulic lifters, mild cam and 10:1 compression for 340HP, one 4bbl for 400HP and two 4bbl for 425HP. I owned a '63 409 in '63.

The 64 SS had a 409/ 425 HP..the earlier chevy 409 had 405 HP and both motors were built up 348s From a 56 Truck engine and put into the 58 Impala with 3/2s

Fast motors but cracked pistons and overheated and you can always tell that motor by it W shaped Valve covers. It was replaced by the 396/427/454...a better motor for sure

409s like 427 fords or 426 mopars All had a Street version with/one four lower HP...NOW who remembers the 1962 Ford 406...405 hp??? LOL didn't think so as it was a Bomb.....was just a oversize 390 with 3/2s ....Had to run a hotter heat range plug not to smoke them out...BAD MOTOR
