@TheMrsmartass13 1.11 is a straight up remake of the first 6 episodes of the original series with some minor changes to plot and character. 2.22 takes some of the elements of the series up to Ep 19 but deviates further away e.g. adds mari as a character. Some believe this is seperate story, some belive this is a 'reset' of the NGE universe and that some lines and shots are clues to this (opening waves shot of 1.11, outline on hill, everything Kaworu has said so far)

i really find it interesting what they did with rei and shinji's relationship, in the original series their was a hint of a relationship, but shinji saw her more as his mother than a girlfriend. but here in the finale fight scene with the angel they made shinji go ballistic to the point of world destruction because he loved rei. when in the original it was auska shinji loved.

But when you take a look at the story, characters, and so on, there's a lot to be desired. Not that it's a bad thing, of course. That's just the way Shonen manga/anime is.

But NGE is a very character and plot-driven story designed for more mature audiences. I mean, half the NGE side characters are more complex than the main DB cast combined.
