I always wondered why the Orcs opened the gates of Mordor. Why? What could they possibly gain? The assembling army had no siege equipment, no wagons or provisions. Presumably Sauron (who is not stupid) is able to communicate in some sense to his armies, so why would he be so easily duped? I don't know what the books are like, but the more I watch the movies, the less I like them, the third especially.
@kev3d He had to attack IMMEDIATELY! You must take into consideration: Sauron ASSUMES that either Aragorn or Gandalf has the ring, but are still inexperienced and unsure on how to use it. Their army is small. If he strikes quickly and devastatingly, he might be able to kill them all and regain his ring. Every moment he waits, the enemy who has the ring grows stronger, and might overcome him. He had to attack - and Aragorn knew this, which is why he went there - to draw away attention from Frodo.

Aragorn knows the Mouth of Sauron is lying for two reasons.
1: The guy doesn't mention the ring, at all. If Frodo had really been caught/killed, then Sauron would have the ring again.
2: Sam is never brought up. Aragorn knows Sam went with Frodo, so he guessed the guy was lying.

I always wondered why the Orcs opened the gates of Mordor. Why? What could they possibly gain? The assembling army had no siege equipment, no wagons or provisions. Presumably Sauron (who is not stupid) is able to communicate in some sense to his armies, so why would he be so easily duped? I don't know what the books are like, but the more I watch the movies, the less I like them, the third especially.

@kev3d He had to attack IMMEDIATELY! You must take into consideration: Sauron ASSUMES that either Aragorn or Gandalf has the ring, but are still inexperienced and unsure on how to use it. Their army is small. If he strikes quickly and devastatingly, he might be able to kill them all and regain his ring. Every moment he waits, the enemy who has the ring grows stronger, and might overcome him. He had to attack - and Aragorn knew this, which is why he went there - to draw away attention from Frodo.
