Hello there. Mike Outram here. Re this solo, I come in around the 1.20 ish mark, it's me and Steve playing at the same time, from 1.38 the solo is just me. Best played loud :)
For those asking SW did the first guitar solo while a guitarist by the name of Mike Outram did the second solo. Such a great song, such a great album.
Guess what? They are all Porcupine Tree songs, and they're freaking unique.
Regarding this song, the mellotron, the interweaving 3-voice-part and the guitar harmony in the 5th minute mark are but a few of his trademarks. Really well played Mr. Wilson, you managed to give us eargasms once again!
P.S. Sorry for the multi-post and the f-ed up order but I had to write all these down for the sake of a through analysis. Take care everyone!
My point being: Wilson is one of the few musicians around who can combine his influences and create a track that directly relates to his own style. This is the Chimera that every musician chases but there are actually very few people who have accomplished it. Some examples:
Voyage 34 Phase 1 --> reminds you of Pink Floyd.
Arriving Somewhere --> reminds you of Marillion and Opeth.
Could it have been a King Crimson track? No. King Crimson, although ahead of their time, would have sounded a lot more "primitive" in the aspect of mixing, effects and such.
This track sound like Liquid Tension and all the such? Yes
Could it have been a Liquid Tension track? No. Although it's very techincally executed it lacks the (some find them boring, I personally enjoy them) flashy 25-notes-per-second-per-instrument solos
IMPORTANT NOTE: I totally respect all the bands mentioned below, the criticism is not meant to subdue their musical talent, but just to emphasize my point.
On topic:
This track sound like Mars Volta? Yes
Could it have been a Mars Volta track? No. Mars Volta would have made more "aggressive" (anyone who has heard their music knows what I mean) transitions through the different musical parts. (or split the song in 5 different ones) :P
@hotties4jesus@hotties4jesus Hey, I know Tony Levin as bassist and Chapman Stick-player for Dream Theater's side project, Liquid Tension Experiment. Check out Osmosis by them for some seriously cool Champan Stickage :)
gotta say this man is a god of good music... "harmony korine" is the epicest song i've ever eard and this one's guitar and drums are just amazingly awesome
thumbs up for steven wilson, the god of the best music
@SlaveExplosion Ever hear Cygnus? Or Cassandra? Because those are far more varied and complex as far as writing goes. I could see you saying they can't perform at this level though, because the musicianship in this song is just.... words cannot describe. But as far as writing goes, this song is pretty basic, just repeat the same thing over and over again, be totally badass musicians and bring the tension up and down and then do a little something different all in the same 21/8 time signature.
@matthewjoe88 Yep, I'd agree with you if I wasn't a crazy as hell Steven Wilson fan boy :P If you look at the albums The Sky Moves Sideways and Anesthetize, and you can say The Mars Volta can compete at the same level, then I'd be inclined to listen to more of The Mars Volta :P
@rocker97834 Totally, both Steve Wilson and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez are genius. My heart would stop if even I heard rumour of them working on a calaboration album. They actually have some similar ideas musically. Both of them are some of the hardest working muscians in music today Omar records like over 8 albums a year and Steve probably does the same. I would love it if they formed some kind of super side-project that combined TMV and PT. Music in general would never be the same.
@007Pogo My heart would melt and probably my brain would too if I could hear and see such a collaboration. Talk about super-group if that happened. IMAGINE THE LIVE SHOW! Oh, I need to stop before I have to change my pants. Someone needs to bring this news to both bands. Right away. I am dead serious. My ears are waiting.
everybody saying all this stuff about how it reminds them of King Crimson... haha of course it does, Tony Levin is playing bass in this song and Gavin Harrison is drumming! not to mention the fact that Steven and Robert collaborate all the time.
Reminds me of King Crimson. Especially the guitar. To me, Steven Wilson is the 21st century Robert Fripp. He's just and endless well of good music: Porcupine, solo, I.E.M, Bass Communion, No-Man and all the albums that he's produced.. Oh, man, do I like him...
@BrazilianDuDe Damn, I was listening to this song and searched for this song on youtube specifically to state that there is a huge king crimson influence here, but you beet me to it!

Despite being a blatant Mars Volta ripoff, this still manages to sound uniquely Steven Wilson-ish.

@marcojp94 21/8, a measure in "/16", never really heard of it, why divide time signature that small? =P
FlyteDanny 1 year ago
@marcojp94 I figure it to be something like 4/4 + 5/4 + 9/16.

@emmanuelt1125 It's actually 11/8 + 7/8 + 3/8. Go ahead try counting it, it totally works.
