  • Bright and beautiful. When I was a kid all things were made in the USA, refrigerators, toys, machinery, computers, shoes. all. but now to save on labor are required the Chinese that manufacture for usa to buy it back to us. You see because the economy is fucked. Now you know where are the jobs and money from grandparents ...

  • Very nicely done. Beautiful bikes! Thumbs up for keeping high quality cycle works including all the assembly in-house and in the US. Here's to many more years of success!

Unfortunately, said bikes are priced outside the range of most of us. :(

  • @gymkhanadog

Our bikes start at just $1,499 for a full bike. In the world of bike shops, that's right in the mid-price point. Sometimes we have used. Thanks for you nice words, and let me know if I can do anything for you.

  • @CptnCrud That's not affordable, I guess it is if you're rich but for most of us it isn't.

  • @CoDisafishy

    What's your price range?

  • @CptnCrud Mine would be $700 but I'm saying that it's not affordable for middle class people. The bikes are probably really good and deserve to be that much, I'm saying that it's really not that affordable for everybody.

  • @CoDisafishy We do sell (made in Taiwan) KHS, and they have several bicycles in the sub-$1,000 range. As far as custom bicycles made in the United States, I don't know of a manufacturer that makes complete bicycles for under $1,500. Most of our customers are middle class, and often put a bicycle on lay-a-way so they can pay for it over several months. We do what we can to make them affordable, but even so, we can't please everyone. Thanks

  • Great video! Reminds me everything about the shop I'm the new learning mechanic at! Everything is exactly the same! Fit to finish! Except one thing, we use carbon fiber instead of steel! Calfee is a great company!

  • @cahernand1

We offered carbon fiber custom frames from 1974 until 1990. Maybe someday we'll offer them again.

  • do you have a internet adress to look in at, see prises and your stuff, offers of what you do ?... can you copy another frame just in titanium

  • @bassen69bobber

    rodcycle.com is our website.

Yes, we can build a titanium bike to any specifications.

    Thanks

  • great shop great video! all the best you guys!!!!

  • loved the whole vid wish there were more shops like this but for bmx

  • hope your shop stays open for many more years

  • @bonniebonskins

    Thank you.

  • Why so small resolution video?

  • @GHEORGHEIONUT

Back when this was posted, Youtube imported videos and reduced the resolution when it was loaded up. I believe all Youtube videos back then were reduced in size when posted.

  • I wish I had access to those machines . Then I would build a crazy custom chopper!!

  • Jolly good show from a steel fan from London. I have a jig fitted steel frame and it's the bestest beecykul ever, just done 60 hilly miles no worries.

  • Too bad they don't know a thing about safety though. TIG welding without gloves is going to give you cancer, seen it happen..

  • @sardonic87 What type of gloves will prevent the cancer?

  • any bmx bikes

  • i dunno... fitkit? is that the best way to measure for a bike?

  • @felderup

The best way is our new adjustable NEXT-fit bike in combination with an experienced, professional fitter.

go to next-fit.com to check it out

  • doesnt seem like a profitable bizz

  • @thisgame2

I hope we're profitable. Otherwise, we've been losing money for 38 years now ;-)

  • @CptnCrud haha owned lol

  • @CptnCrud i dont see a market, but really isnt it a compliment in a way to say it doesnt seem profitable.

  • @thisgame2 so has Ford Motor Company.

  • yo quiero una a medida.......

  • too bad you couldn't re-do the video with all of the distracting breath pops (put a pantyhose pop filter in front of your mic if you ever make another video or just don't get so close to mic)

your shop is really cool though & you're right, i'd rather have a fussy perfectionist painting my bike than someone like jesse james from that chopper show who'd rather do things cheap & fast than right.

you're shop would REALLY be interesting to me if you did "kustom" style customs (eg. beach cruisers)

  • @djgambitron

I still have several other videos (instructional) that we've been trying to finish for a few years. After they are all done, perhaps I can find time to work on this one. Thanks for your comments.

  • @djgambitron

    Sure, that would be great.

  • Great video! Very interesting to see this level of workmanship in a century of mass production.

  • man how I would love to have a shop like yours. I chop up old bikes that are discarded in the alley or given to me. I've made eight bikes to date wish I could post some pics. Granted the ones I chop-up are not as nice. Cool shop man need an apprentice hahaha later

  • awesome! i wish you guys had a shop on the east coast!

  • How lovely. I want one...!

  • can u build the bicycle from animes??

  • Oh how I wish you guys had a shop here on the south coast of England.......fabulously professional setup.....Well done!

  • @junction666

    Thank you very much.

  • @CptnCrud were ya located

  • @CptnCrud

    We are in Seattle Washington.

  • You guys are awesome! You guys should try using lighter metals and such like titanium!

  • @lovablevietboy

We do build from both titanium and aluminum. Our lightest bikes are made from steel though. I've written some articles about the different materials that you can read in the 'articles' section of our website at rodcycle.com

    Thanks for the great words!

  • @lovablevietboy LOL Titanium is fucking expensive!

  • @DoktorGPS Titanium is thee only way to ride. I have two TI bikes and i look on ebay often for more.

  • Nice :)

  • Old world craftsmanship, definately a lost art form.

  • Added your site to stumbleupon. Great site, to bad your not in the UK.

  • can you build a board walk racer for me??? with a whizzer motor that i have thanks paul

  • Very impressive, best wishes for you guys. It is a pity I don't live in US.

  • the voice over need to be done again, perhaps even talk to the master builder at one point

  • @magicalgoats

Thanks for the recommendation, but it'll have to wait until we are not so busy building bicycles. Hope you enjoyed it anyway.

  • @CptnCrud Yes it was interesting, especially the part about custom tools.

  • @CptnCrud

if you'd like to keep the original audio, i could put a few minutes into cleaning the audio up for you with an editor and put some EQ on the 2 different sources so they sound more alike, but i don't do video editing. i imagine you folks are more like me, like building real things & not so much computers, but audio is something I tinker with besides cycling.

even if you're roadie specialists, ANY shops that builds it's own bikes is extra cool!

    more bikes, ZERO CARS!

  • you where shooting mono Adio ...FIX IT

  • @AlexFoster1234

Sorry, we're a very busy bike shop and not really great at the AV thing. Some day I might have time to fix it, but until then, hope you can see past the old-shool mono audio.

  • @AlexFoster1234 Get over it guy.

  • @lcacwelder no

  • great video.. very cool

  • oh N were is this located?

    thank you

  • i have a question, what da name of the thing she used to paint da bike at 4:15 teresa?,thank you

    ps nice video

  • son todos unos artistas. buen trabajo.

  • >.< I'm trying to find something like this but for BMX

  • yeah that would be awesome.... custom built bmx bike frames!

  • Ya but then I figured thats why they have bigger and smaller top tubes, diffrent headtube angles etc. So no point just go build a bike lol....

  • Hope you guys work with carbon fiber to keep up with the trends...

  • We built carbon fiber frames from 1975 until 1989 or so. Steel has really taken over our main business, but we still work in aluminum and titanium. Steel has really surged over the last few years as we can build a bike that is as light or lighter than carbon or ti, and rides better than carbon. You can read an article that I wrote about frame materials in the Tech Talk section of our articles on rodcycle.com

  • @CptnCrud Interesting since all the professionals and semi-professionals ride on CF bikes (or CF/Alu/Tit combinations).

  • @shadowblack1987 Not the ones that buy here;-) We're happy to build anything though. Surprisingly enough, professionals really don't buy anywhere as they pretty much ride what their sponsors give them. We're busier than we've ever been and I don't think we've sold anything but steel frames for the last 2 years. Maybe we're seeing a resurgence of steel? Maybe most people don't want to buy a Formula 1 race car as a daily driver? I don't know....you should try our s3.... Thanks for posting.

  • @CptnCrud This is true, a well crafted steel frame is much nicer than any carbon or ali to ride. Great video by the way, branch out to the uk!

  • @ohyeahtotally08 Thanks.

  • @shadowblack1987 they ride what they are paid to ride. not what they want to ride

  • @CptnCrud So you wanna say you can build a frame thats lighter than 750gramms? really funny

  • So irresponsable to put a guy welding right in our face ... don't you know one can go blind looking at that ? Wankers !

  • @doldei Seeing how they're the ones employing the welder and he's got the mask on, I think they know it better than you do. You cannot go blind from a video.

  • @Ruflcopta Yes you can go blind from a video ... ever heard of Justin Bieber ? It was a joke dude , and a fine one I may add !

  • I want to install disc brakes. Where can I get the rear bracket for the caliper? Thanks!

  • what software do you use?

  • can you make trial bikes?

  • Very nice! Impressive! How i would love to get my hands on a workshop like yours!! :)

Congratulations and keep up the amzing job! :)

  • impressive!

  • about how much would an xc frame cost

  • Why do people (including this video) braze the parts at the rear? What's the benefit to brazing over welding? I've taught myself how to mig weld, next I'll tackle tig. But what's the benefit to brazing? I don't know much about brazing but I'm sure you must have a reason?

  • The dropouts are brazed in place so that we can fill the ends of the stays and have a nice looking finish. It's the design of the dropout. Some designs are welded, but most are designed for brazing. Other parts, like the brake bridges can be brazed or welded in place. Brazing is faster, leaves a nicer finish, and is easier to move if necessary.

  • @Delticola that is a tig welder and that is how you tig weld there useing the same mig wire they just use that type of weld (tig) because how clean it is less to sand and polish

  • @nitrokid99 Tig is Tungsten Inert Gas. You don't use Mig wire with Tig welding processes, you use a thicker rod with Tig. The welding in the video is brazing. It's neither Tig nor Mig. You can see the response to my origional comment. The response confirms that they are using brazing. Brazing is not TIG. You are right, TIG is cleaner in the finished weld, less clean up, neater looking weld. But that process in the video is not TIG.

  • @nitrokid99 Ah, I stand slightly corrected. I watched the video again, yes on the frame they're using tig. But my origionally comment was about the rear of the frame, that's where they're brazing. I'm still not convinced that that's mig wire. It's too straight. I think it's thin wire for TIG. But he should really be wearing a glove on his right hand. He's gonna get "hand cancer" as they say, skin cancer.

  • do you make bmx frames

  • Sorry, we don't make bmx frames.

  • Fantastic!

  • my mountain bike fork is to short..Do you have a stem in head ? i have 3/4 inch to deal with...after berings and caps...

    ty

  • FANTASTIC.

  • do you have any shops in texas and do you carry good cheap bmx bikes ?

  • do you make bmxes im in canada

  • this is freakin awesome !!!!!!!!!!!

  • You can manufacture in the usa,as this company has done,it really about Quality, fit ,finish, light weight are things I look for.Great video

  • Cool, Dennis sounds like he knows his stuff.

  • Great Video! We help people with the process of learning how to ride bikes. If you want to learn some basic mountain biking skills, from the top pros, check out our instructional videos at the Bikeskills Channel on YouTube. Subscribing also enters you to win FREE gear.

  • sound like realy expencive

  • Hi, do you make full susp frames?

  • We have, but they are really not our specialty.

  • that was really nice. thank you.

  • Does this place make bmx bikes

  • NICE!...

    really nice video...

  • its nice to see things being built here in the USA

  • hello great video can you do a titanium frame bike with no paint? what my wife and i are looking for is like the specialized sirrus elite but instead of aluminum frame we were thinking titanium

    thanks for the video

  • NICE SET UP

  • We make stuff that's not available. What kind of parts are you looking for?

  • Cool video!! Love the machine shop!

  • Excelente. Felicitaciones. Y saludos desde el Ecuador.

  • Hello, I have a Miller Syncrowave Tig welder(with pulse settings), and was wondering what filler rod(including diameter), and what amperage and pulse settings you use to TIG steel frames?Nice bikes by the way. I like your tubing notcher too.

  • Use rg45, 1/16" rod and as far as settings id set the max amperage to about 110 DC with high freq. start only. You can play around with the pulse I tend not to use it though. I'd rather control the pulse effect with my foot

  • @ZennyBruce Go to the miller website, they have a welding calculator.

  • what kind of downhill rigs do you have?

    oh.

  • We build a few mountain bikes each year, but not really any downhill bikes. Sorry.

  • but otherwise... beautiful bikes! i love the in house building!

  • using a drill to take the slack out of the spokes? thats a bit inaccurate isn't it? no wheel builder i've ever known has ever used a powertool to build a wheel.

  • The drill fitting is specifically designed for taking the slack from the spokes. It has a bit that is shaped to fit the back of the spoke nipple. The wheel isn't tensioned with the electric drill. Just brought to the point where the mechanic can take over by hand. We build thousands of wheels each year, and without the use of this tool, a wheel builder can develop carpal tunnel syndrome after a few years.

  • yeah, but i thought you were supposed to count turns just to get it dialed and to keep the hoop centered on the hub.

No kidding about the carpel tunnell! I'm only 15 and i gotta get surgury next month.

  • the spokes are spun down to a specific point when the nipple driver dis-engages. It has a limit on it that measures the amount of threads that have been turned into the nipple and simply disengages when it hits that limit. The wheel is still very loose when the mechanic begins turning the spokes by hand, but the spokes all have the same penetration into the spoke nipple when he's done with the drill.

  • sounds like a nifty lil gadget! are they commercially made or is it also a house-built tool?

  • It is a commercially made tool. We have 2 of them that we've had for 20 years or so, so I'm not sure where you can get one. We did order ours specifically for that purpose.

  • to get the first few rotations down it will save time, then, if you saw, the wheel builder used a nipple tool to accurately tension the spokes

  • was he actually tig welding without a glove?

  • He is TIG welding without gloves in the tacking together stage. When he does the full weld, he's wearing gloves.

  • how thick steel are you using?

    Thanks!

  • Thickness varies from .4mm to .9mm

  • Comment removed

  • do you built custon bmx bikes?

  • second that.

  • i would love to work there

  • Do you ship to Mys Chelyuskin, Russia?

  • We can ship to Russia, yes.

  • But to Mys Chelyuskin? It is very remote there.

  • Does UPS or Fedex deliver there?

  • I love it

  • excelente video

  • Is this the bicycle of American Chopper?! lol

  • well done! you have alot of investment engineering Machines. its given me ideas now hehe. no worries, im 8000miles away in new zealand :)

  • I have tried yahoo answers but no reply I wonder if you can help. So i have a normal front suspension mountain bike and i want to fit a down hill mountain bike frame on it, could i do this although its not a downhill bike PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm assuming you mean a down hill fork. you can probably fit one but as the frame isn't designed for the kind of stresses downhill riding puts on it your bike will probably break pretty soon and that's assuming you upgrade the wheelset since they would give out first.

  • GOOD LUCK maybe I see you in Stock .Lol

  • this is great. your mitre jigs and machines definitely make the process more reliable and efficient. I would imagine one of the huge advantages apart from geometry would be the ability for customers to have unique personalised visual elements incorporated in their frame like shaped detailed gussetts etc

  • We can build bmx. It's not our usual, but any bike frame can be built to order.

  • do you build bmx bikes

  • Great work... I´d love even to learn such a "craft art", and of course to buy a custom bicycle from R+E, too bad I live in Brazil... do you guys ship out of the continent?

  • We ship all over the world.

  • If any one needs the brazing alloys. I work for Prince & Izant Co. Call me if you need some alloys. 216-362-7000 ext. 230

  • nice vid. didnt realize such shops existed

I currently ride an s&m LTF. I support made in america bikes

  • love to work there!!!

  • Great video LOl..

    thankz for uploading this ...

  • cool

  • very nice , I would be happy to work in a shop like this! Thx very much for posting the vid

  • I recently purchased an Adventurer from R+E. Amazingly well made bike. I needed it custom sized and took less than a month for them to design, build, assemble, and ship the bike to me. Their customer service is top notch as well. The front rim was either defective or damaged in shipping, they rebuilt the wheel and I had it back in a week, with shipping. Can't beat the price on the frame+fork for a custom job either.

  • Do you have a website?

  • do you bild bmx bikes and if so haw much do thay cost

  • Out of interest,is there a reason that stainless is never considered as a frame material?..i must admit have never seen it used anywhere, and i wondered if there was an engineering reason eg non applicable properties or price or too difficult to manufacture..

  • We do build bicycles out of stainless. We just completed one last week. My winter bike is a bike that we made out of stainless in 1999. Stainless has gotten to me more expensive than titanium, so most people choose titanium instead of stainless anymore. There's not a lot of stainless bicycle tubing available anymore either.

  • do you build specialized mtb? no?

  • stainless steel isnt the best to weld, the fumes and everything you know, but some bike manufactures weld it all then dip in a galvanization stuff

  • 36"er mtb single speed? :)

  • We'll build anything you want. We build a lot of single speeds, and I've had a couple of customers ask about 36'r mtb's but no orders on them yet.

  • maldito ingles

  • that's really cool mate! could you make a custom bicycle for delivery to the UK?

  • Absolutely,

We build and send bicycles all over the world. Just sent one to New Zealand.

  • do you just do mountain/speed bikes, or do you also do bmx bikes too?

  • We can build any type of bicycle. We have on occasion built a custom high-end bmx bike.

  • mtb / atb? thanks in advance

  • Yes we do build mountain frames. Mostly hard tails.

  • must be really expensive to get a customed bike.

  • that is so great good on us for going for this long u should make shops like that in australia and allover the world good work :):):):)

  • Any decent lightweight brushless electrics - with Lithium Polymer batteries - seen a nice 9 kg carbon fibre base bike - you guys should offer to 'electrify' bikes for people

  • kick ass.........it would be alsome i would love to have one custom built

  • I dig the jigs. Really wonderful workmanship. Are you hiring? I used to build for Confederate Motorcycles. I fabricated all of the chassis components and welded them using TIG. Let me know.

  • Thanks for the comments. Sorry, we're not hiring right now. Our team is pretty dialed and we're able to produce everything we sell at this point. Keep in touch though, maybe things will go through the roof and we'll need to add a builder.
