  • Griffith made Intolerance as a response to this and it is supposed to quell the controversy but In have never seen it, and apparently people really only remember him for this.

  • the KKK are a ridiculous, uneducated and pathetic group of people. aren't they a little old to be dressing in bed-sheets with paper hats on their heads. grow up people. it's the 21st century.

  • the sad thing is, some people still think like this today. obviously their brains have not evolved enough to see that, it is in fact 2011. come on now people.

  • also the birth of hollywood

  • i learned today in school that this was the first great epic movie... i live in georgia :)

  • "history with lightning"

  • I actually watched all 3 and some hours of this movie. The movie is, in fact, despicable. The purpose behind it, despicable. The then-president's support of the film, awful. It's a good movie to learn about the past from though.

  • @usernamethatismine you are despicable.

  • you cannot blame those who made this film, they did what they thought was right at the time.. maybe in a hundred years people will look at our films and maybe be disgust by something else.. yes it is a despicable act, but lets not forget that if we were born into this age, not many of us, would have thought it any different than they did..

my history teacher taught me, that I should not judge I should understand, and when I did, I could change..

  • @pumasduck damn i was legit about to leave a comment almost the exact same

  • Comment removed

  • @Webkinzarethecoolest or Dixiecrats.

  • Woodrow Wilson loved it.

  • As they say the past is a distant land far, far away where people act and think different.

Maybe in a hundred years they will have some debate about the movies of today.

  • Did any of you who are filled with righteous indignation actually watch the video, or see the movie, or ANYTHING other than hear that there's racism in this?

Yes, racism is bad. No shit. Try again when you can come up with something more original.

  • this is some crazy, sick shite-- america is so backwards and still is

  • @Deguello321 I commend you for your honest, accurate and decent response, there is nothing more to say

  • the Klan with their lighted Cross somes to her rescue! the happiest ending of any film out there!

  • when the 'Mullato leader' first looks at her, I want to puke.

  • "The former enemies of North and South are united again in common defence of their Aryan Birthright." how beautiful it is to see a race united.

but this cene was really sad for me, good White men dying by the hands of aliens, kinda like today, which is what I thought about: our race today.

  • Anyone who watches this movie and says it isn't racist is a simpleton. Just the mere idea that they "summoned the Klan" -- like they were calling Superman to save them -- is racist. The Klan hates/hated just about everyone but white Lutherans.

  • Mulatto's were the result of white men raping women of color. White men did this because they preferred a darker persuasion. The third president of this nation also preferred women of color.

  • @MsQuietStorm71 you were lied to. it was the negro men.

  • This movie was saying the truth, look what's happening today, nwords are using their money, fame and everything they have to get white women simply because they are racially inferior and ugly and they prefer to be with better humans than them.

  • @Spartan307 so true! although I think its a little differant with mixed races, they seem to have a natral jelousy to all pure races.

  • @wesleycobo I hate to disagree with you, but being mixed race I enjoy two unique cultures and feel comfortable affiliating with one or the other. In other words, I enjoy twice the cultures and I love it that way. Actually, if anything I've had people express jealousy for not having the freedom that I have.

  • Sure is alot of truth in this film.

  • @william76950 haha i loove your sarcasm

  • Dvorakm beutiful music

  • love this film

  • @mover4u this is racist fucking film you moran!!!

  • Found it at goodwill yesturday for 50 cent !! A VHS copy!!!! I will also be using it for educating others.

  • This is an awful movie.

  • Wow I wish this would be put on DVD. I'd be happy to find a VHS copy. Oh course, I only want it for educational purposes.

  • nevaseenamancry: It is available on DVD!

  • When I heard about this film in my Film history class, I was so impressed and then I watched it. I loved it for its technical innovation and for its story. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a racist, but I can't really explain it. It's the same as an historian being impressed by the world war 2. History is always passionating, even from a point of view that I don't share. Whatever, great movie.

  • Wow. This is ridiculous.

  • it's funny they only use white people to pretend to be african americans with power whilst having the lower class african americans being actually played by african americans

  • Filmic innovations aside, this film is despicable.

  • @natethefighter perhaps you should argue that history is despicable, not this film.

  • Good point. People have always been cruel to one another. Sad but true

  • Perhaps, but there is something to be said for the fact that the film was almost single handedly responsible for the revival of the KKK in the early part of the century. Now, I'm not trying to say that the movie should be barred from the public or whatnot (a la the Warner Brothers "Censored 11"), as history obviously is incredibly important. But the film at the same time needs to be recognized for the message it sends.

  • @OfficialFrizzo

Only one problem. This film isn't true to history.

  • @weakfingers I agree, the truth was far, far, more horrible.

  • @OfficialFrizzo perhaps you should realize the man who made this film is part of that history, and so this film IS despicable.

  • @OfficialFrizzo Glorification of racism is despicable.

  • so.. is that Lynch guy supposed to be black?

he doesn't look black, but he is getting treated like an enemy, which implies he's black.

  • nevermind

"I shall build a black empire with you as queen by my side"

that quote pretty much answered it

my point stands that he doesn't look very black though

  • They used white people with shoe polish on their faces all through the movie to play black folks. It's really funny...

  • yeah its silly that was quite common back then

  • @redchocobo Lynch is mulatto. Back then, they felt mulattos were worse than black people because they are the result of interracial sex, which to them was the worst thing that could possibly happen.

  • @MiamiPush2theLimit no, it was the worst possible sin! and still is to any true Christian.

  • He is mixed race.

^ True, not just a derogatory comment.

  • Silas Lynch is an actor by the name of George Siegmann. He is white. He made over 122 movies and directed as well. He was the #1 villian actor of the 1920's.

  • Interesting

  • WTH! Lynch is the guy who created the art of lynching! -_-

  • what the fuck LuegerSS? First of all, who the fuck watches this video anyway?? I just wanted to see first off if they had this and second of all if someone actually posted a comment. Fuck you.

  • In terms with the advancements that were technical this movie is significant. However it is included in Steven Jay Schneider's 1001 movies to see before you die because of its historical significance of American thought at the time. I did expect comments like Lueger's though. I just don't pay no mind to them

  • Well, it is a great line. I nearly fell off my chair at the time I first saw the movie and that "Aryan birthright" intertitle came up.

It's doubly funny when you're German...
