Griffith made Intolerance as a response to this and it is supposed to quell the controversy but In have never seen it, and apparently people really only remember him for this.
the KKK are a ridiculous, uneducated and pathetic group of people. aren't they a little old to be dressing in bed-sheets with paper hats on their heads. grow up people. it's the 21st century.
the sad thing is, some people still think like this today. obviously their brains have not evolved enough to see that, it is in fact 2011. come on now people.
I actually watched all 3 and some hours of this movie. The movie is, in fact, despicable. The purpose behind it, despicable. The then-president's support of the film, awful. It's a good movie to learn about the past from though.
you cannot blame those who made this film, they did what they thought was right at the time.. maybe in a hundred years people will look at our films and maybe be disgust by something else.. yes it is a despicable act, but lets not forget that if we were born into this age, not many of us, would have thought it any different than they did..
my history teacher taught me, that I should not judge I should understand, and when I did, I could change..
Did any of you who are filled with righteous indignation actually watch the video, or see the movie, or ANYTHING other than hear that there's racism in this?
Yes, racism is bad. No shit. Try again when you can come up with something more original.
Thousands of people denounced the film Birth of a Nation when that racist shit came out. Both Blacks and Whites denounced it. Griffith was a vile racist. Let's not excuse racism because a lot of idiots were that way--always remember that there were thousands of whites that opposed white supremacy, John Brown, John Adams, Col. Robert Shaw, Benjamin Lundy, the Quakers, and more. Stupid is always stupid no matter if it was during the time of Sparatus or when that ass hole Griffith did his dirt.
Anyone who watches this movie and says it isn't racist is a simpleton. Just the mere idea that they "summoned the Klan" -- like they were calling Superman to save them -- is racist. The Klan hates/hated just about everyone but white Lutherans.
Mulatto's were the result of white men raping women of color. White men did this because they preferred a darker persuasion. The third president of this nation also preferred women of color.
This movie was saying the truth, look what's happening today, nwords are using their money, fame and everything they have to get white women simply because they are racially inferior and ugly and they prefer to be with better humans than them.
@wesleycobo I hate to disagree with you, but being mixed race I enjoy two unique cultures and feel comfortable affiliating with one or the other. In other words, I enjoy twice the cultures and I love it that way. Actually, if anything I've had people express jealousy for not having the freedom that I have.
When I heard about this film in my Film history class, I was so impressed and then I watched it. I loved it for its technical innovation and for its story. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a racist, but I can't really explain it. It's the same as an historian being impressed by the world war 2. History is always passionating, even from a point of view that I don't share. Whatever, great movie.
it's funny they only use white people to pretend to be african americans with power whilst having the lower class african americans being actually played by african americans
Perhaps, but there is something to be said for the fact that the film was almost single handedly responsible for the revival of the KKK in the early part of the century. Now, I'm not trying to say that the movie should be barred from the public or whatnot (a la the Warner Brothers "Censored 11"), as history obviously is incredibly important. But the film at the same time needs to be recognized for the message it sends.
@redchocobo Lynch is mulatto. Back then, they felt mulattos were worse than black people because they are the result of interracial sex, which to them was the worst thing that could possibly happen.
Silas Lynch is an actor by the name of George Siegmann. He is white. He made over 122 movies and directed as well. He was the #1 villian actor of the 1920's.
what the fuck LuegerSS? First of all, who the fuck watches this video anyway?? I just wanted to see first off if they had this and second of all if someone actually posted a comment. Fuck you.
In terms with the advancements that were technical this movie is significant. However it is included in Steven Jay Schneider's 1001 movies to see before you die because of its historical significance of American thought at the time. I did expect comments like Lueger's though. I just don't pay no mind to them

As they say the past is a distant land far, far away where people act and think different.
Maybe in a hundred years they will have some debate about the movies of today.

"The former enemies of North and South are united again in common defence of their Aryan Birthright." how beautiful it is to see a race united.
but this cene was really sad for me, good White men dying by the hands of aliens, kinda like today, which is what I thought about: our race today.

so.. is that Lynch guy supposed to be black?
he doesn't look black, but he is getting treated like an enemy, which implies he's black.
