Can someone please answer my question =( I'm wondering why patients don't seize during surgery----I mean, all this poking around the brain---doesn't that irritate the cortex? If so, what do surgeons do to prevent/treat it?
@dhamyanthi I'm not sure what you mean by seize, but the brain doesn't have any sensory receptors on it so prodding the brain will not produce pain. The patient only needs local anesthesia for the craniotomy.
@dhamyanthi The brain doesn't have pain receptors. Seizures are excessive neuronal activity "poking around the brain" will not cause or initiate a seizure.
i hathat operation done 3years ago. i live without much of a memory, cant concentrate, very emotional, mood swings, migraines, full titanium plate which replaced my frontal lobe bone. i woke up during theatre was put under for 10 hours initially then for a further 5 hours.
they cut me open from the top of my forehead hair line right down to the back of my right ear. healed now. i never want to go through that again!!
well, if the brain doesn't have any sensory receptors on it, why do people get headaches?

@72dew a craniotomy is when they cut your head wide open and remove the bone for surgery.. had mine in 08 to remove a avm that ruptured..
