it appears the cold sores themselves are gone now. it took me the whole 12 days for them to be gone. that's probably the most severe cases because normal people's heals in a week right?
the sores are gone but the shapes are still there and it's still red. What does that mean?
@xbearcanrockx a week is actually pretty fast. if you don't take care of your cold sores, they can last for a couple weeks or longer. if the blisters have gone away, they are probably not infectious anymore and they are going to be gone soon :)

@contemplate206 Don't be ashamed! Nobody cares, and the people who would judge you for having a cold sore are idiots. Honestly, I would skip concealer if you're a guy because you probably won't know how to put it on, making the cold sore even more obvious. But if you want, you can buy concealer at drug stores or department stores (dept stores being more expensive but have make up artists who can help you make a good decision about which concealer to buy). Honestly, carmex will help a lot!

I actually tried this method I read about that involved Ban (unscented) roll on (crazy, I know) and acetone and it stopped it from blistering/puffing up. It stayed around the same size as when it came on and I guess it's not that noticeable. Cold sores are also infections...and thusly one clear thing youll notice is a clear discharge of fluid on a pretty regular basis. It's this discharge that contains dead cells as well as LIVE virus and is highly contagious.
Additionally, since it's and infection, cold sores generally STING quite a bit more than a normal "cut" or "blsiter' its size normally would.
@yokoh691 well a cold sore can spread hand to hand, but if you've never had a cold sore before, it's hard to tell. a cold sore feels really itchy and burning. it should produce small blisters within a day or two, so if it hasnt, it's probably not a cold sore, but again, you don't have to kiss or have sex to get one.

I was told abreva is a tool and a joke. Just a pathetic marketing scam. It is really small for sure and def not worth the 20 bucks I paid for it. I was told it doesn't work at all, it's just to make you feel better so I would not get it again and not recommend anyone using it or getting it at all.
@TheFashionSpaz I always get them in bunches, like 7-10. I think I have 10 this time, probably worse than last time. Of course, I'd rather not have them at all. But if I do get them, is there any way to control if I get a bunch or just one? It looks like you have just one so it's not as hard to deal with?
@xbearcanrockx That sucks! I used to get a few at a time when I was younger because I would always touch them and pick them. Thats how you spread them all over! NO TOUCHING! unless you're applying something like carmex

This time it came over night. Randomly woke up Friday morning and saw them. There was nothing I could have done to prevent it this time. More than likely, the tingling and itching happened in my sleep
These are seriously painful and hard to deal with. The worse part is everyone can see them. I would rather take canker sores over cold sores any day because canker sores go away faster and no one can see them but I have to deal with the pain myself.
I'd rather live free of pain and feel better but unfortunately for me I have an auto immune disorder so I'm gonna have to get used to them >_<
u might have gotten this question before, but i got my dear cold sore a few days ago..i treated it, and it dried a bit the upcoming two days, but this morning i see that it has spread a bit (on the same spot). I did not touch it very much yesterday, only dabbed some paper on so to get rid of the fluids. Would it be ok for me to continue treating it with cream and dab to get rid of fluids or should i let it be completely?
@Pathrissia It's hard to know. If you don't treat it, it will get worse before it gets better most likely. I would try carmex-- it will dry it out and shrink it. Just keep being careful like you are about not picking at it
@Pathrissia all these things help. Toothpaste putting ice on it Garlic Coffee grounds. Tea bag Nail polish remover/ rubbing alcohol Hydrogen porixide Vitamin B Salt Lemon juice if its already fluidy. you need to keep drying it out. (tea bag, coffee grounds mixed with water to make paste, ground up garlic, (all for half hour at a time) or nail polish remover/ rubbing alcohol or.salt.

Just so people know, cold sores are herpes simplex, if you kiss (ANYWHERE) give oral sex because you CAN pass it on. I don't know why she says this isn't like genital herpes...because it is...people can have herpes simplex on their genitals. Know your information...
Even when you can't see a coldsore you can still be shedding skin and pass it on to anyone you touch your mouth with or share drinks e.t.c.

@TheFashionSpaz Mostly correct. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is primarily found orally, and HSV-2 is primarily found genitally, but you can get HSV-1 genitally and HSV-2 orally. The definitive way to find out what strain you have is to take a culture, you cannot tell by the location. If you pass a cold sore on your mouth to someone via oral sex, it does not magically change strains to HSV-2. Wikipedia has some good information on all of this. Be safe out there, people.

just got over a cold sore i hate them ! but one thing i do when i have them is apply creams , makeup etc. with a q-tip so i can just throw it away right after and avoid any possible germs on my hands where it can be spread but just make sure once you touch the q tip to the cold sore dont touch it back to bottles of tubes make sure to throw it out
dont forget advil! gets the redness down and can help those public situations haha. and i am a guy so i dont need to deal with the make up part but for those women you can use liquid band aids and put a layer of that on there and then you can add make-up.
Also remember to wash your hands before and after going to the restroom! People can spread it to their genital region (although it's not common.) Just to be on the safe side wash your hands both before you go to the bathroom and after. I also recommend walgreens apothacaty benzakonniium chloride anteseptic. The little vials that are fairly new use this as the active ingridient and it has been shown to work in clinical trials.
I buy Valtrex from Canada online... I don't have insurance so thank God for the Internet! Valtrex is the only fast cure so far?? So i decided to see a young doctor who was fresh out of medical school and she told me Valtrex is what they tought her in medical school! It works great!!! Thanks for the tips , because cold sores suck haha BTW I use Burt's Bees Medicated lip balm with Clove Oil it really works for me and I like that it's natural another thing you could use is direct clove oil. :)

@50ulEat3r don't even worry about it, girl. LOTS of people get cold sores-- more than you think! And yes, it can be embarassing. If you have one, I would avoid kissing, but no big deal. It will go away in a few days. Anybody who wouldn't want to be with you just because you get cold sores is a jack ass. Seriously.
i use acyclovior it is amazing but you have to be carefull because amoxicylin can cancle it out ive been on it for a year and havent had one sence then
I noticed if you take a paper towel and put a good bit of rubbing alcohol on in and press it against the infected spot for about 10 minutes it instantly deflates the sore dries it out and begins the scanning process. Shortened time from 7 days- 48 hours.

You should try taking Lysine daily. You can get Lysine at a vitamin store (and its cheap!) and its an immune system booster. My husband turned me on it and I'm telling you, it works for preventing them. Also, if you happen to get one, take two a day until its gone. Totally works!
Another method you can do which I find works for my mom(since I've only gotten a cold sore once in my life) everytime now that I discovered is something everyone has and will cost you nothing. ICE. When you feel the cold sore coming, literally run to your fridge grab 1-2 cubes and directly apply the ice to the place where you felt the tingle. Hold the ice on the spot for 15-20 min replacing the ice once it melts. This works everytime, let me know if it works for any of you! Hope I helped :)

Also, any SURGAR feeds the virus!! Chocolate, nuts, white flour, coffee/ caffein! Diet is also, key! Fight from the inside out and you'll never see a blister even pop out.
Abreva applied "throughout" the day will NEVER allow it to even blister. It takes it away in ONE DAY "if used correctly". Keep it in your pocket/purse dab it on throughout the day and it takes away the pain and prevents the cold sore from blistering. I have used it for YEARS and have NEVER had it go beyond the "tingling feel! If it is already blistered do the same, apply it throughout the day as much as you can and by the next day it will be FLAT! I've done it and so have several people I know!
P.S. If you put a good amount of Abreva on in am then let it dry, you can then put a "stain" lipstick like Cover Girl Lip Stain or whatever. Just make sure its not lip gloss or regular lipstick as it will keep lips moist and keep the cold sore alive! Hence, your cold sores are lasting 4 days and with Carmex is keeping them MOIST (BAD) and with Abreva they'll last 1 or at most 2 days! I have never had a cold sore more that a day since Abreva! Use it correctly and you won't either!
and you're absolutely wrong.. HSV 1 on you genitals doesn't not then make it type 2, it would then just be type 1 on your genitals. Either type of HSV can occur in either place!
I really understand, the worst part is having a bf/gf or someone and you don't want to spread it. I currently use Zovirax (5 times a day, but sometimes... i put more) I also take L-Lysine, two a day when I have them bitches. Daily Vitamin C.. which l-lysine seems to have added to it too and thats that.

@airbmikal not the same thing! same family of viruses, but HSV-2 is generally worse. keep in mind chicken pox is caused by a herpes virus too. it's not the same thing.

Though now im more aware of the possibility of spreading it and trying not to touch my face -_-. also recommended not to touch your face to reduce getting a cold.

One Word...LYSINE!!! I swear by this vitamin. I got a sore this morning, woke up & took about 3000mg of LYSINE, then continued taking 1000mg every hour-two hours & then another 3000mg before bed. Throughout the day I also used Hydrogen Peroxide to clean the sore & put on some Releev (or anything w/ Benzalkonium Chloride) 3-4 times throughout the day. Also, I know it sounds silly, but I worked out & sat in the sauna. Sweating out all the toxins works wonders. The day is done and so is my sore :)

@THEZEBRALUVER12 if you mean you can only go to the bathroom to wash your hands once a day, then yes hand sanitizer will do the job, too. you could also use a q-tip to apply carmex so that you don't have to keep dipping your finger and sanitizing. hope this helps :)

Apply it to your finger first, then to the cold sore. NEVER apply something like Carmex or Chapstick directly to a cold sore.

@TheFashionSpaz Mostly correct. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is primarily found orally, and HSV-2 is primarily found genitally, but you can get HSV-1 genitally and HSV-2 orally. The definitive way to find out what strain you have is to take a culture, you cannot tell by the location. If you pass a cold sore on your mouth to someone via oral sex, it does not magically change strains to HSV-2. Wikipedia has some good information on all of this. Be safe out there, people.

just got over a cold sore i hate them ! but one thing i do when i have them is apply creams , makeup etc. with a q-tip so i can just throw it away right after and avoid any possible germs on my hands where it can be spread but just make sure once you touch the q tip to the cold sore dont touch it back to bottles of tubes make sure to throw it out

dont forget advil! gets the redness down and can help those public situations haha. and i am a guy so i dont need to deal with the make up part but for those women you can use liquid band aids and put a layer of that on there and then you can add make-up.

Also remember to wash your hands before and after going to the restroom! People can spread it to their genital region (although it's not common.) Just to be on the safe side wash your hands both before you go to the bathroom and after. I also recommend walgreens apothacaty benzakonniium chloride anteseptic. The little vials that are fairly new use this as the active ingridient and it has been shown to work in clinical trials.

I buy Valtrex from Canada online... I don't have insurance so thank God for the Internet! Valtrex is the only fast cure so far?? For years i use to go to a local family doctor and he would give me some generic cream??? It never worked! So i decided to see a young doctor who was fresh out of medical school and she told me Valtrex is what they tought her in medical school! It works great!!! im 13 i first got a cold sore in grade 4 i believe i hear its not contagious until it appears but when you dont have it its not contagious anymore but im worried about getting a boyfriend because i know i could just avoid kissing until it dissapears, but im afraid it will ruin my relationship when im older because they will be afraid / grossed out and think its contagious which it is but not when it dissapears so i was wondering how you deal with this

I noticed if you take a paper towel and put a good bit of rubbing alcohol on in and press it against the infected spot for about 10 minutes it instantly deflates the sore dries it out and begins the scanning process. Shortened time from 7 days- 48 hours.

I've literally been stuck in my house for 3 days because I feel like everyone's going to stare at it. Even though my friends have been telling me everyday to get out of the house.

You should try taking Lysine daily. You can get Lysine at a vitamin store (and its cheap!) and its an immune system booster. My husband turned me on it and I'm telling you, it works for preventing them. Also, if you happen to get one, take two a day until its gone. Totally works!

Another method you can do which I find works for my mom(since I've only gotten a cold sore once in my life) everytime now that I discovered is something everyone has and will cost you nothing. ICE. When you feel the cold sore coming, literally run to your fridge grab 1-2 cubes and directly apply the ice to the place where you felt the tingle. Hold the ice on the spot for 15-20 min replacing the ice once it melts. This works everytime, let me know if it works for any of you! Hope I helped :)

Abreva applied "throughout" the day will NEVER allow it to even blister. It takes it away in ONE DAY "if used correctly". Keep it in your pocket/purse dab it on throughout the day and it takes away the pain and prevents the cold sore from blistering. I have used it for YEARS and have NEVER had it go beyond the "tingling feel! If it is already blistered do the same, apply it throughout the day as much as you can and by the next day it will be FLAT! I've done it and so have several people I know!

P.S. If you put a good amount of Abreva on in am then let it dry, you can then put a "stain" lipstick like Cover Girl Lip Stain or whatever. Just make sure its not lip gloss or regular lipstick as it will keep lips moist and keep the cold sore alive! Hence, your cold sores are lasting 4 days and with Carmex is keeping them MOIST (BAD) and with Abreva they'll last 1 or at most 2 days! I have never had a cold sore more that a day since Abreva! Use it correctly and you won't either!

I really understand, the worst part is having a bf/gf or someone and you don't want to spread it. I currently use Zovirax (5 times a day, but sometimes... i put more) I also take L-Lysine, two a day when I have them bitches. Daily Vitamin C.. which l-lysine seems to have added to it too and thats that.
I recently read the book Cold Sore Freedom In 3 Days.. check it out! It's cheap on ebay (as a pdf) or anywhere. I still need to try things out from it... will see ^^ thx for sharing

yeah its painful and it sucks... i just take acyclovir (pronounced uh-sike-luh-vor) and wash my face alot. most of the time it takes a few days to go away and i usually get them once every year. the first time i had one was when i was 18 and it was horrible! but ever since then they have been very very mild and small. i hope this helps and the video was great! thanks!

One Word...LYSINE!!! I swear by this vitamin. I got a sore this morning, woke up & took about 3000mg of LYSINE, then continued taking 1000mg every hour-two hours & then another 3000mg before bed. Throughout the day I also used Hydrogen Peroxide to clean the sore & put on some Releev (or anything w/ Benzalkonium Chloride) 3-4 times throughout the day. Also, I know it sounds silly, but I worked out & sat in the sauna. Sweating out all the toxins works wonders. The day is done and so is my sore :)

@THEZEBRALUVER12 if you mean you can only go to the bathroom to wash your hands once a day, then yes hand sanitizer will do the job, too. you could also use a q-tip to apply carmex so that you don't have to keep dipping your finger and sanitizing. hope this helps :)

@dukenukemfreak I agree with hergatrons. Go to the dermatologist!!! They will hook you up with a prescription, so when you do get them you will be able to zap them as soon as you feel it coming on. it helps so much, trust me :)
