i have this demo somewhere on my computer i was messing with it a while ago and im trying to find it... does anyone know where it is located by default
HAVOK isn't as powerful as PhysX - it's entirely software-based, while PhysX is both hardware and software based. You have your own freaking chip for physics - which allows for much better collisions, etc.
i have this cloth demo but yet i can view it just as good as it looks there and yet i dont have a physx card? i say they are a waste of money. its better spending the money on a better cpu so u can get the same results as u would with a ppu
While we can view Havok and PhysX as competing technologies, since they are different answerers to the same problem, they deal with different area's of physics.
Havok FX cannot come close to PhysX ability to compute game play altering physics because it still relies on the CPU for collision events, while Havok FX exceeds PhysX in using physics for visual effect due to stream processing on shader pipelines.
Which one gets standardised is down to convenience, as neither is superior to the other.
The carpet tearing at the end looks good. Will make a good job inside games. But still no realtime application deals with calculating selfintersections.
After watching this again I notice some glitches... the cow/balloon gets stuck in the wall ( havok physics does this in oblivion) and the part where the balls roll throught the cloth pipes you can see the balls clipping through the sides...
the last scene where the cloth rips would be awesome in WWII shooters!!!
No they are not. They are in fact extremely different. PhysX is a very specialized piece of hardware. Cell is a general Purpose CPU with some slave units.
PhysX has more similarities to a GPU than to Cell.
That comparison comes from the ageia dev relations guy I met.
I understood them both to be networks on a chip comprised of simplified CPU's with ISA's optimized for vector-float operations, whose processing elements are constrained to work in on-chip local-store memory. They can both manage transfers to & from external memory so are not DSP's (although similar).
Like the cell they rely on asynchronous transfers to hide memory latency wheras GPUS hide memory latency with large numbers of threads. They are designed for larger problems than individual pixels or vertices, with more inter-unit communication. (cell LS dma, agiea switch-fabric)
They need to be far more general purpose than a GPU in order to handle complex collision algorithms, not just physics maths solving.
Here is a extract from an article from the wikipedia site.
"Middleware physics engines allow game developers to avoid writing their own code to handle the complex physics interactions possible in modern games. Sony has licensed the PhysX SDK for their PlayStation 3 video game console."
Dude i belive that the phyx card just be a blow in the wind i think the best idea if ur a gaming geek.. u need to wait the development op grafik and all that kind of stuff is growing fast so i don't think it's a good idea to buy the physx card yet
I like how at the cellfactor game site, they say "Get an AGIEA PhysX Accelerator. Now available for less than you think!" umm $199? yeah that's nowhere near what I think a card for a PC is worth.
uhm, do realize that it's a totally new area. there's no competition yet and they still need to get themselves set up, so.. they have a good reason to ask that much.

can you tell me if you need a bfg card in order to run the physx card , im running an ati card right now, also i heard the card uses a regular pci slot is this true ?
it should be fine, you can run the physx card with your set up. Just meat the system requirements like most of the stuff you buy for PCs. I have the Asus physx card, and a GeForce 8600GTS. Works great. You should have no prob. and Yes it is a PCI slot, I heard a roomer that they were releasing a PCI-E 1x modle but since the 8000 GeForces have Physx in them, they may not. But I went with it anyways to squeez more FPS. For more Info, goto the 3w . newegg . com They have what you need ;)
Everything ive read states that the physics card lower fps because of the added strain on the gfx card from rendering everything that the physx card produces.
The card doesnt make the game go faster, it makes it look better, meaning more work for the gfx card.
OMFG it rips too?! Can you imagine putting cloth and ragdoll physics together with like sword or zombie games?! Imagine zombies actually ripping off flesh, or how the skins rips when you cut through people and stuff. Or having actual real physical skin scars and clothing scars and scratches in your iron armor when playing sword fighting games. This is sick.
Cloth Physics, perhaps, but it's unlikely they'll be used through the PhysX card, there just isn't enough users of it to warrant investing in the engine.

DarthOblivius 4 years ago
they both came from the same system, only difference is Havok does not support the Hardware Acceleration
dragonrift 4 years ago
yes it does
dragonrift 4 years ago
Havok = Havok FX
Ageia = PhysX/Novodex
Both are major competitors, havok uses it's own engine and the cpu/gpu. Please at least do some basic research.
Panasonicp2 4 years ago
PhysX uses novodex engine as does havok and all these other engines so why all the fuss
dragonrift 4 years ago
Havok doesn't use the novodex engine ...
Panasonicp2 4 years ago
Why would Havok and Ageia BOTH use Novadex? Surely then they wouldn't be competitors?
