How did you manage to get one of these back on the road? The few that wasn't crushed were deactivated and given to universities under the agreement that they would never be pit back on the road. Would like to know the film story :)
Damn GM...instead of fixing the flaws, they shut down the whole project, we could of had the Volt 10 years earlier and GM wouldnt be in the shithole theyre in now. I learned about this car 4 days ago and this thing is amazing, I wish GM wasn't stupid...
CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE. If i were a smart hacker, i would help the world by stealing back the plans for the EV1 and distributing it across the web in order to disrupt the hold the oil companies have on us. In the hopes that someone could make a more modern EV1 (EV2F) electric vehicle 2 free.
GM did not want to produce the EV1 from the beginning. It was a mandate from the state of Calf. After the lobbyists (backed by big oil) removed the mandate GM took back the cars and destroyed them, despite the fact that they were in position of new battery technologies (Ni-Mh) that would more than double there range per charge.
It didn't cost GM any money either. The government gave GM 2 billion dollars for Research and Development plus promotion costs. It was a freebie. I think Clinton would have been better off giving it to the military and let them produce the car, then the republican congress would continue funding because they are war fanatics.
An American oil company bought up over 60% of the Ni-Mh stock and shelved it. Because the auto\gas\ part replacement industry could make much higher profits selling the massively complicated and prone to break down internal combustion engine.
That would be Chevron, which acquired control on Oct. 16, 2000 after it announced a merger with Texaco. Texaco had bought control of NiMH on Oct. 10, 2000 (6 days earlier) from General Motors, which had bought control in 1994.
Now that the Tesla roadster and others, are soon to put out EV's with lithium-ion batteries that have nearly no maintenance costs (not to mention NO FULE REQUIRED) and get over 200 to 300 miles to the charge ( for about $3 to $4 a charg) the big automakers will have to join in or go under.
These Lithium batteries are not slated to lasat longer than 100,000 miles, perhaps as little as 30,000 miles; they are not as good as Nickel when it comes to life costs.
Then I guess the makers of the $100,000. Tesla roadsters are a bunch of big fat liars. Won't they look stupid when the hundreds of cars they have sold start dying 70% sooner than they stated. Or could you possibly in error about the life time of there battery set.
No, not mistaken. We know how long those batteries last. The Tesla is only being sold to those who can afford to buy a new battery pack every 100K miles -- or less.
A battery pack would cost about $1500 and last the life of the car with proper care. The only maintenance item is tyres, and maybe replacement brushes for the motor at 200,000 miles.
We have seen the Toyota Rav4 driving alot miles.. and still doing 90 miles out of the 120 it should get. But.. we never seen a car with lithium doing that.. because it's not tested in true life conditions. You shouldn't say these arguments without seeing it for ourselfs.
So i first want to see the same car doing it with lithium and see what it does.
They NiMh battery's did also better then expected on paper... Why wouldn't lithium do that? ...
It depends on the source. Chinese made Li-Ion cells are very low quality and not suitable for automotive use. they're fine for ipods and perhaps laptops but not in the temperature extremes of cars.
Watch "Who Killed the Electric Car". It is cool to see what happens to corporate stupidity and greed when the secrets that they have been hiding to keep their monopoly going start to crash in the light of truth as it spreads out the rest of the world.
WWU has completed the first step, which was to get the car running again so that they can convert it to a hybrid, according to the contract they had signed with GM.
Just watched Who Killed the Electric Car like 5 minutes ago and decided to do some research right now. Wow, the EV1 really was under the radar didn't even know about it until I watched it on TV. >_>
Invite more of your friends to watch it. They pulled the movie from Blockbusters here in Seattle. For many weeks it was on their soon coming in shop TV shows, one week on the shelf, then pulled from all the stores. I bet they got a cease and desist order or some payoff from GM too.
I love that electric whine sound!!!.. it makes me want to drive my supped up electric golf cart!.. it goes about 70km/h.. but this car is pure awesomeness!
Shhhh... you will bring the black helicopters and the MIBs if you are not very quiet. Sometimes you can't avoid a few feet on pavement to get it on and off the transport trailer.
Nearly done with Phase I - to get the disabled EV1 running again, ready for Phase II to convert to hybrid. You would have thought that GM would have overlooked some things and issued a press release showing that they helped colleges be innovative in vehicle research. But noooo... they have to be big, bad corporate scrooge.
Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the rarest car in the world! (more rare than the Ford Model T)

I normally don't like American cars, but I do adore the EV1. Too bad the GM management was so corrupt... :(

This is the same BS that happened to HEMP. Destroy the evidence make it illegal. I cannot believe how sad our society really is.

I'm surprised somebody doesn't make a replica kit car, since GM obviously has no plans to produce it.

We need to start bootlegging NiMH batteries to flout the fraudulent patent on them.

NiMH are great, but lithium is better :)..
And yes it's terrible.. because toyota wanted to build more of those... but they couldn't because the american oil company bought the patent.

Wonder how much the battery costs compared to all the oil, filters, belts, and hoses you'd have replaced by the time you got to 100,000 miles?
