  • Sounded awesome with a subwoofer, although a bit distorted. Gotta love those RD-180 engines! :)

  • Wow looks like from the sound delay you were 5- 5.5 miles away but it really puts out quite a strong sound for a good while, maybe because it ascends much slower than say a Delta or the space shuttle without the assistance of SRBs. This must be what it was like watching the Mercury astronauts on the Atlas rockets form the beach in 1962.

  • yeah i was really surprised by both how loud and how long the sound was. those atlas' don't appear all that impressive on the launch pad.

  • Also the low clouds, they always say a cloudy sky helps reflect the soundwaves down to the ground more strongly than clearer skies. I think it's the slow ascent, when a shuttle or a faster vehicle moves downrange and higher faster the sound fades away more quickly.
