How a movie with such amazing cinematography turned into such a boring snoozefest of a love story with a clownesque Lex Luthor running around with a beyond rediculous masterplan is beyond me. The airplane scene and the part in this clip where Superman falls to earth are sensational. Perfect emotional reaction, amazing special effects, great thought in everything that's going on.
Almost feels like the action scenes were written by someone else entirely.
if superman tried to pick up the island and all that pressure was focused on one point... wouldn't he end up flying right through it instead of lifting the island up?
No.. It's because he did it slowly.. And since the object is much larger it would take more time to tilt givin the distance. However due to the velocity he's traveling at i would say its pretty accurate :)
@TheNipplesofGod ITs a passive ability of a super powered Kryptonian its called 'Tactile telekinesis' basically his body creates a small aura over the entire object he's lifting so that huge things dont just fold under him.
This scene to me was pretty damn iffy; especially in light of what you saw earlier, where only a knife sliver incapacitated him; plus he lost all his strength when he just landed on it ...now the producers wish you to take a huge leap of faith and believe while totally exposed to thousands of Kyyptonite mega crystals; he is going to attempt to lift a mountain of the deadly element...I'm sorry everybody that just does not pan!!! One of the many sorry mistakes made in this inferior reboot!
@zenjim007 I think that was the entire point of the scene just before it when he solar charged himself then further used his heat vision to go deeper with less effort and create a boundary between him and the kryptonite which slowly withered away from the rocks obvious angle of repose and weight. By the time he was being directly exposed he was pretty momentus into the exercise and when it was all said in done he went unconscious.
@LivingxPrime You made some good points; however it still takes a leap of faith considering his earlier condition which was so bad Lois had to bale him out of the drink. Hard to believe catching a few rays of sun is going help him recover enough to lift a entire island and chuck it into space. Don't get me wrong; I am a die hard Superman fan; however this scene seems to stretch bonds of what would be possible even for him without more
@zenjim007 sorry; didn't finish. Just saying he needed more time to recover from wounds and poisoning in his system from Kryptonite. However this is Hollywood Superman and not the Superman from the comics I was raised on; so I guess they can call the shots and we'll just eat popcorn. They tried hard with this reboot; but in my opinion The first with Christopher Reeve still rules because he is the closest we have gotten to Superman in the comics. Rest in peace Christopher.
@zenjim007 Like you, I also enjoy the comics and have roughly 700 Superman issues compiled throughout the years; I'm also looking forward to this new Man of Steel movie directed by Snyder.
You're probably right about the time he took to recover. If he was going for the rapid recovery he should (at the very least) left the atmosphere. It seems, however, that director Bryan Singer wanted to go the cinematic route instead with the use of the sun above the clouds.
@LivingxPrime 700 Superman issues! Thats great! I too am hoping for a good movie to come out of the new Man of Steel; but they need to take it in a different direction than a reboot of whats been done. I think between the last movie and Smallville; people are tired of the constant soap opera with Lois Lane, Lana or whatever other female in distress or need of whatever. Its time to get the Man of Steel back on track with some serious action as an action hero with real challenges
@scottmansoori You're wrong actually, the Kryptonite didn't create the land, the sunstone did, like the one that created the Fortress. Lex placed the sunstone in a Kryptonite cylinder that way the Kryptonite could grow with the sunstone.
i just love how in like every one of supermans movies it involves him littering in space lol...loved this movie it could have been better but hey nothing is ever perfect cant wait to see sups hit the big screen again in 2013...
How was that over-the-top? Superman has been known to have accomplished immeasurable feats from his will to save people. That's the attribute that stands out from all the other super heroes.
i love the part when the atmosphere around him gets warm as he falls back to the ground..i've always wanted a superman movie with all these realistic things, like when he flies from the ground to the sky, and he breaks the sound barrier after 2 seconds xD
I understand he absorbed extra energy from the sun to get the power to do this, but just once I'd love to see a Superman movie that didn't have a kinda sketchy ending (it killed me as a Superman fan to say that). Like in the theatre I found myself saying "...ooook..." and even in the Christopher Reeve's Superman film, he turns back time?! lol hhoolllyy
I see that everybody is complaining about this scene, but I can't. Reason being: I stopped watching this movie when I saw that Lex Luthor was still wearing a wig and selling real estate. It's too bad because even though I'm not the biggest Supes fan, I was really looking forward to this movie.
I know a lot of people hated it, and there was a LOT to hate, but I felt Brandon could have been a good Superman.
Despite the scene they had him crying like a little bitch when he was getting kicked around. Superman still would have mud stomped those assholes until one got a lucky shot in.
I get how it's supposed to be like a battle of willpower and everything but for fucks sake, kryptonite is the ONLY weakness that Superman has! The purpose for it existing is to make him seem more human. This scene isn't terrible because it's unrealistic, everything about Superman is unrealistic. @dockecj at various times in Smallville/ the superman comics he tries to heat/laser vision kryptonite and it always manages to fvck things up royally, like making him blind etc. etc.
Okay so when the Kryptonite starts poking through, why not use the heat vision to dissolve it or break it off. And when he lifts the rock away, he's exposed to the sun, so shouldn't his batteries immediately start recharging?

man, this movie actually made me cry a lot more than it should have. it was so good!! as a huge Superman fan, this movie had everything... unbelieveable.
@Johnlindsey289 I don't mind that it ignores either part 3 or 4 actually. I see part 3 as a kind of stand alone entry in the series anyway that is more of a Richard Pryor movie than anything else.
Okay, so guys...the reason he could still lift the mountain with kryptonite is because the kryptonite was covered by the rock. When the rock fell away was when he started to weaken, because it revealed the kryptonite. And by that time, he only had to lift a few more seconds before he let it go.
Either way, why can't everyone just watch it and not be so Damn critical? This was a great movie. The best superman ever. And I've seen them all. ROUTH forEVER!
@rehzon When they redid Superman in the 90s, Supes explained too Lois that his cells are like living solar batteries. The more yellow sun he's exposed too the stronger he becomes. In one comic, he had received too much yellow sun, and the Parasite was able too drain Superman too his normal power level. Also, the 90s Superman is not has powerful has he was in the 80s. He had too sweat too get the job done. And when he lost his powers at various times, He was content too be human.
@hulkster46a well needed extra because the Kryptonie in there willl power him down drastically. under normal power levels without kryptonite he can do that with the planet
because even if it is somehow lead that magically formed (under an expanding island of kryptonie.) those kryptonite shards came out through it, which means it can't be lead that is split so easily by small shards.
and if it's rock, it ain't thick enough to block radiation
of course between improbable krypto-child and the miserable Jesus-styled-Resurrection (he's dead! no wait... he disappeared!) I can't watch a movie that dismiss it's own limits of reality
guys..it was the krypton in that mountain that made him powerless..if you notice any little piece of krypton makes him powerless..and this was whole mountain of it...so he fell..otherwise he could just lift it like easy..got it guys..lol..
@TheGoldSlime OK BUT A MOUNTAIN OF KRYPTONITE IS DIFFERENT!!! -____- Kryptonite weakens him and renders him powerless. Do you REALLY think that he could lift A WHOLE FUCKING MOUNTAIN of his weakness??!?? I don't think so. Again, complete bullshit.
@akilddddd It isn't physically possible(In the superman universe anyway) for superman to be able to lift that mountain of......wait for it......KRYPTONITE. Especially when he was stabbed with it and now he's lifting it? Bullshit. You can't tell me that it wasn't bullshit and not laugh :D
@Naruke0 Yeah, that didn't make sense to me either. I mean, one minute he's wobbly just from standing on it, and the next minute he's able to have the whole thing on top of him with no problem?
@Naruke0 You can see a coating of something (possibly lead from deep underground) that is shielding him. It falls off and exposes more and more kryptonite as he flies higher.
Thing is, the average viewer will not make the connection there, and even for me it took a second viewing to consider this a factor. Pretty weak writing, but the explanation is there.
@Naruke0 Then why are pieces of earth falling off to slowly reveal kryptonite underneath instead of having the kryptonite visible right away? There is obviously something covering it up at the start. Not that you can see it on this dark, 240p version, but on the DVD at home, it is quite apparent. Don't get me wrong, this movie is outright bad, but I always felt this scene was great if you ignore the heavy-handed Christ imagery when he falls back to Earth.
@SweetZombiJesus I honestly don't understand what you're talking about. There is clearly at 1:53 where there is kryptonite in his face -_____- Since its that close he should have fallen straight down. But no, he kept lifting the mountain as if there wasn't any kryptonite.
@Naruke0 Yeah, its called extra effort creative license, like Spiderman lifting the train off him in the comics when it was double what he should be able to lift, or a Green Lantern focusing a bit extra to use their ring on yellow (before parralax was removed from the reactor). Its dramatic stuff they do to make it fun, but at least here they showed the kryptonite coming out of the rock over time, and not there is his face right away at the start.
@SweetZombiJesus Even so, he should have fallen straight down at 1:53 even if there was this special coating to shield him for a little bit that you're referring to
@SweetZombiJesus lol I know. I was being sarcastic. This movie was god awful. Lets hope The Man Of Steel saves the superman movies. Its written by Christopher Nolan so I'm thinking its gonna be good.
@Naruke0 I'm worried though, as Nolan does darker takes on things. Superman is about the brighter more optimistic side of super-heroes. Hopefully, he will find a nice balance between the darker emotionality he often explores and the light-heartedness and naivete Supes protrays.
@SweetZombiJesus Well when Nolan directs its a bit darker, but probably not when he just writes it. Zack Snyder is gonna be heading the project and he's a decent director. Although he also is a dark director, so unfortunately you might not get your wish.
well hulk fans? i would like to see you say some shit about hulk throwing a damn continent up in space while having your weakness stuck inside you (Lex stabbed superman with kryptonite) and around you (kryptonite island)
@Moisemo25 naw bro remember lex snaped off like half of it inside him? thats why when you see him in the hospital the nurse removes a peice of kryptonite
This movie was ok but not great given the technology they have today for movies. If they would have edited down some of the dull moments, teased a new enemy for the sequel like brainiac, darkseid or doomsday and did away with the whole angle of superman having a kid this movie would have been alot better. I did like Routh as Superman and spacey as luthor.
This movie had some really powerful moments. It's a shame that in between those moments Synger chose to fill the film with a lot of boring, dull drivel. I've never understood why he just copy pasted the Donner versions of Clark and cast Kate Bosworth as Lois or even had the kid angle and did nothing worthwhile with it for 2 hrs except a piano scene.
@allankles I was wondering why they never bothered to have "Clark as himself" moments. You can't just ignore so fully that side of the character. That, plus the kid, and the "Supes is a creeper" thing failed. Also, so little conflict with the boyfriend. "He's a great guy!" "Okay, he can raise my son for me!" No conflict there. I'd have preferred if either Superman or Clark confronted him at some point. The end result could have been the same, but... dammit.
Comics relevance aside, I just don't think it would be possible for Supes to lift a freakin' mountain the size of a city with all its weight resting just on his hands. It would be like trying to lift an elephant with a needle; he would just go straight through it.
I dont care what any of you people say..there is no way in hell superman should be able to life a continent of krytonite this movie had way to many flaws..worst superman movie ever!!!!
When Superman dipped into the suns surface he became immune to magic and kryptonite. But that end up killing him. And as Superman neither died or Sun dipped in this movie; I have to agree with you.
Wrong actor. Bad writing. No respect at all to the first 3 films or the comics.
Not that the first 3 were much better on terms of relevancy to the pre-crisis comics anyway.
@MrHoppers002 because kryptonite is his weakness and it kills him along with blocking his powers the planets and moons don't block his powers or kill him do they
well exerting enough force to move moons = out to losing your power and exerting enough force to move a kryptonite continent. It's all suspension of disbelief
@shadowmask19 LOL! Me too but it was because they were trying portray Superman as Jesus, I was thinking people were going to get all riled up and I was right.
@TheBrollyPortugal Exactly, and sadly, the haters here don't even get that it wasn't pure Kryptonite he was actually touching. When he DOES, that's when he falls.
i hated the ending he just wasnt pushed in the film like it needed some1 to match him and haven a son realy annoyed me just didnt fit but it did have its moments though
Humans have been known to lift one ton objects clear over themselves when life is on the line, doesn't surprise me that this is superman's maximum effort.
thumbs up if u think im right ok... first of if the kryptonite mountain was enough to reduce him until almost death then how the hell he can lift up the mountain some more? LOL fucking epic ending dont u ppl also think so?
@99daniu Superman gains his power from the Sun - the scene before this he gathered immense amounts of power by flying up close to the sun. This allowed him to do what he did.
I'll admit I havent read the comics - around my area theres no where to really get comics, either way supes can heal his wounds without direct sunlight so I think that generally renders your point moot. In TV, film, comics and cartoon universes, superman changes quite alot. The Smallville version is much more powerful with direct sunlight, thats how he beat the bizarro version of himself. I think what the movie was trying to tell us came across clearly and I said it in my previous
I think you've failed entirely to understand the concept behind Supes abilities.
Superman abilities stem from the radiation omitted from Yellow, orange & blue suns. Whilst in the confines of the such suns Supes stores the energy at a molecular level. Much like solar power.
Without a regular soak from the sun Supes powers feign. Especially in that situation. This exact "same" situation is played out numerous times during Pre-Crisis comics.
There has only ever been one time during any age period of the comics where Supes has actually harnessed an immense amount of power. And that was because Luthor tricked him into Sun dipping.
And that end up killing him. He soaked up so much energy that his cells started to break down. Although during the period he was the strongest he had ever been.
Kryptonite & magic had no effect on him during that period.
Throws it into space. It goes through a wormhole where life eventually evolves on it and it becomes the planet Krypton from which Kal-El is sent from. Years later Superman saves Earth from Lex's evil plans by throwing a huge chunk of Kryptonite into space, which goes through a wormhole...............ah you get the idea.
@hulkster46a yeah sometimes humans can do great things too. years ago i remember reading a news article (forgot where) where a mom lifts a fallen debris from fire that trapped her children even when a several firemen failed to do.
@variousiroiro Yeah, I remember that article too. The human body is a wonderful instrument. I never get tired of seeing Lou Ferrigno, has the Hulk, or Arnold when they were competing in the 70s. Pumping Iron will always be one of my favs. Arnold hasn't changed personality wise. He still has a good strength of character. And seems too succeed when he puts his mind too something.
this is the silver age version....when he removes some of his mental blocks he becomes infinite{has no weaknesses depending on the writer}.... he can re-arrange the solar system if he wants too....
How did Superman lift the mountain, his purpose on Earth is to protect its people and that drive is stronger than anything else in him, he will never quit and he will never run, you can not stop Superman when he is protecting Earth.
man Superman is awesome!!! He throws a small island with kryptonite it into orbit!!! AWESOME

In one comic, he had received too much yellow sun, and the Parasite was able too drain Superman too his normal power level. Also, the 90s Superman is not has powerful has he was in the 80s. He had too sweat too get the job done. And when he lost his powers at various times, He was content too be human.
hulkster46a 5 months ago
@hulkster46a
Yeah, Powerless Superman was restored by energy from Cyborg Supes & Eradicator.
This over charged his cell + he was absorbing sun..parasite saved him. He can
be in the sun all day and be powerful, but flying next to the sun raise his level.
rehzon 5 months ago
@rehzon Have you read, or seen, All Star Superman? His cells were exploding from saving astronaughts in the sun.

Have you read Our World's At War, where diving into the sun gave him the strength
to push a planet? All Star Supes is an alternate story, where current Supes
cells aren't damaged that way.

@damonisMINE96 Couldnt agree more. Sucks they bring a new actor for the next one though..
Queenrocks20 6 months ago
@damonisMINE96 is it rock? or LEAD?
because even if it is somehow lead that magically formed (under an expanding island of kryptonie.) those kryptonite shards came out through it, which means it can't be lead that is split so easily by small shards.
and if it's rock, it ain't thick enough to block radiation
of course between improbable krypto-child and the miserable Jesus-styled-Resurrection (he's dead! no wait... he disappeared!) I can't watch a movie that dismiss it's own limits of reality
OfirBeck 5 months ago
@damonisMINE96
Because slivers of kryptonite the size of a human thumb have caused superman to collapse into a shivering wreck.
And this is a mountain of the stuff. He should be dead pretty much off the bat.
CrossedCelt 5 months ago
@damonisMINE96
The island was an earth/kryptonite fusion - remember Superman seemed all right
when he landed on it, but Luthor's punch hurt him.
rehzon 5 months ago
guys..it was the krypton in that mountain that made him powerless..if you notice any little piece of krypton makes him powerless..and this was whole mountain of it...so he fell..otherwise he could just lift it like easy..got it guys..lol..
chriscruise007 7 months ago
@TheGoldSlime Superman shouldn't be able to stand let alone lift a mountain though. He basically should have just been on the ground.
Naruke0 7 months ago
@TheGoldSlime OK BUT A MOUNTAIN OF KRYPTONITE IS DIFFERENT!!! -____- Kryptonite weakens him and renders him powerless. Do you REALLY think that he could lift A WHOLE FUCKING MOUNTAIN of his weakness??!?? I don't think so. Again, complete bullshit.
Naruke0 7 months ago
@Naruke0 it was his will to do it to save the world thats why he lifted it . Superman is incredible .
akilddddd 5 months ago
@akilddddd It isn't physically possible(In the superman universe anyway) for superman to be able to lift that mountain of......wait for it......KRYPTONITE. Especially when he was stabbed with it and now he's lifting it? Bullshit. You can't tell me that it wasn't bullshit and not laugh :D
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 nawl ,,, it just made me belive Superman is even more incredible ...
akilddddd 5 months ago
@akilddddd Then you're an idiot that doesn't think.
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 Yeah, that didn't make sense to me either. I mean, one minute he's wobbly just from standing on it, and the next minute he's able to have the whole thing on top of him with no problem?
kungfuman82 5 months ago
@kungfuman82 Exactly! This is part of the reason the movie was stupid to me.
Naruke0 5 months ago
@kungfuman82 Although I agree to a certain point, there are explanations provided in the film:
1. He re-charged using the sun's radiation in space.
2. He cut deep and had a coating of earth (possibly lead) on the under-side of the "island/mountain".
3. In this film his balls are quite small, therefore he can lift more weight.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus LMAO at #3.
kungfuman82 5 months ago
@Naruke0 You can see a coating of something (possibly lead from deep underground) that is shielding him. It falls off and exposes more and more kryptonite as he flies higher.
Thing is, the average viewer will not make the connection there, and even for me it took a second viewing to consider this a factor. Pretty weak writing, but the explanation is there.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus Thats just you seeing what you want to see. -_____- There isn't any coating
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 Then why are pieces of earth falling off to slowly reveal kryptonite underneath instead of having the kryptonite visible right away? There is obviously something covering it up at the start. Not that you can see it on this dark, 240p version, but on the DVD at home, it is quite apparent. Don't get me wrong, this movie is outright bad, but I always felt this scene was great if you ignore the heavy-handed Christ imagery when he falls back to Earth.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus I honestly don't understand what you're talking about. There is clearly at 1:53 where there is kryptonite in his face -_____- Since its that close he should have fallen straight down. But no, he kept lifting the mountain as if there wasn't any kryptonite.
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 Yeah, its called extra effort creative license, like Spiderman lifting the train off him in the comics when it was double what he should be able to lift, or a Green Lantern focusing a bit extra to use their ring on yellow (before parralax was removed from the reactor). Its dramatic stuff they do to make it fun, but at least here they showed the kryptonite coming out of the rock over time, and not there is his face right away at the start.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus Even so, he should have fallen straight down at 1:53 even if there was this special coating to shield him for a little bit that you're referring to
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 He gave it his 110% :D
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus LOL yes we'll just go with that :D GREAT movie right? :D
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 No, it was pretty bad. It just had three good scenes.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago
@SweetZombiJesus lol I know. I was being sarcastic. This movie was god awful. Lets hope The Man Of Steel saves the superman movies. Its written by Christopher Nolan so I'm thinking its gonna be good.
Naruke0 5 months ago
@Naruke0 I'm worried though, as Nolan does darker takes on things. Superman is about the brighter more optimistic side of super-heroes. Hopefully, he will find a nice balance between the darker emotionality he often explores and the light-heartedness and naivete Supes protrays.
SweetZombiJesus 5 months ago 2
@SweetZombiJesus Well when Nolan directs its a bit darker, but probably not when he just writes it. Zack Snyder is gonna be heading the project and he's a decent director. Although he also is a dark director, so unfortunately you might not get your wish.

JPDerro99 8 months ago
@masteradnim yes, but dont forget, the kryptomountain was made out of... Kryptonite.
Superman has also been known to lift far larger things in the non cinema world.

Please, you know what Batman would have done? He would have used one of his "Bat-Kryptonite Continent Defense" gadgets on his belt.
And as for Luthor, he would've thrown a Batarang at him....Then tied him up.
TBAGNFACEFUKER 8 months ago
This movie had some really powerful moments. It's a shame that in between those moments Synger chose to fill the film with a lot of boring, dull drivel. I've never understood why he just copy pasted the Donner versions of Clark and cast Kate Bosworth as Lois or even had the kid angle and did nothing worthwhile with it for 2 hrs except a piano scene.
allankles 8 months ago
@allankles I was wondering why they never bothered to have "Clark as himself" moments. You can't just ignore so fully that side of the character. That, plus the kid, and the "Supes is a creeper" thing failed. Also, so little conflict with the boyfriend. "He's a great guy!" "Okay, he can raise my son for me!" No conflict there. I'd have preferred if either Superman or Clark confronted him at some point. The end result could have been the same, but... dammit.
TheZacula 8 months ago
this whole scene is kind of biblical
dmar26 8 months ago
Comics relevance aside, I just don't think it would be possible for Supes to lift a freakin' mountain the size of a city with all its weight resting just on his hands. It would be like trying to lift an elephant with a needle; he would just go straight through it.
Comic book logic, you puzzle me yet again.

Like I just mentioned to gamesandstuffs;
Drjrecordz 9 months ago
why???? superman can move moons and planets. how is that too hard to believe superman can move a continent of krptonite.
MrHoppers002 9 months ago
@MrHoppers002 because kryptonite is his weakness and it kills him along with blocking his powers the planets and moons don't block his powers or kill him do they

99daniu 10 months ago
@99daniu Superman gains his power from the Sun - the scene before this he gathered immense amounts of power by flying up close to the sun. This allowed him to do what he did.
gamesandstuffs 10 months ago
@gamesandstuffs No. Not really.
Lol... Gathered immense amounts of power?
Are you retarded? Have you not read the comics?
The only time Superman ever "Gathers an immense amounts of power" is when he finally sun dips. And that process ends up killing him.
Supes was just healing his wounds as the clouds prevented him from doing so.
Drjrecordz 9 months ago
@Drjrecordz
I think what the movie was trying to tell us came across clearly and I said it in my previous
gamesandstuffs 9 months ago
@gamesandstuffs
Drjrecordz 9 months ago
@gamesandstuffs
@gamesandstuffs
Also;
There has only ever been one time during any age period of the comics where Supes has actually harnessed an immense amount of power. And that was because Luthor tricked him into Sun dipping.
And that end up killing him. He soaked up so much energy that his cells started to break down. Although during the period he was the strongest he had ever been.
Kryptonite & magic had no effect on him during that period.

@variousiroiro Yeah, I remember that article too. The human body is a wonderful instrument. I never get tired of seeing Lou Ferrigno, has the Hulk, or Arnold when they were competing in the 70s.
